RE: ACC Coach of the Year
It's just weird. Probably the first time in history a coach who finished 11th in conference won COY. They must like the guy much more than they thought they would.

RE: ACC Coach of the Year
Buzz Williams built VT into a NCAA tourney team in 3 years. They are in the top half of the best basketball conference in America...Virgina friggin' Tech!! And he beat GT head to head.
Everyone talks about how many big games Josh won...
Buzz beat Duke (KP 15), Syracuse (KP 44), Virginia (KP 5), and Miami (KP 31). Only bad loss was a blow out at the hands of NC State.
Josh beat UNC (KP 4), FSU (KP 18), ND (KP 26), Syracuse (KP 44). Also lost to NC State (and many other bad teams)
There's a 0.75 different in KenPom ratings between the "big" wins these 2 coaches had (in favor of Pastner)
One is going to make the NCAA tourney easily, the other...NIT.
Makes zero sense. The COY should've been Buzz Williams.

He had a nice year...
Same conference record he had in the AAC last year with less talent than he had here last year (On Paper).

So he can't coach good or bad rosters. Seems legit

OK. I figured it out. It's a Coaches vote, right? Their votes were cast with this in mind: "which coach in my conference is gonna make me look the best over the next few years?"
Pastner will probably win it next year, too.

And, it is not like they were much improved over last year. In fact, GaTech had exactly the same conf record (8-10) and finish (11th) as last season, and unless they go on a serious NIT run, their overall record will be worse. Essentially, it appears that he won the honor due to 2 games, his win over UNC.
(edited, I earlier said they also beat Duke and that was WAY WRONG as has been pointed out.)
But, they did also have some other nice wins, like over FSU by 22 and over ND. Same point, I think the significant wins are what did it for him, not the entire body of work. But, it is a lot easier to get big wins in the ACC than the AAC since you play a lot more high-level teams at home - and sometimes, it is just your night. I'd say he did an admirable job, but it wasn't COY-worthy.

Sorry for splitting hairs, and agree with your overall point, but Duke blew out GT 110-57 the only time they played.

RE: ACC Coach of the Year
I'd be shocked if GT made the NCAA. Josh said last night that he believed 8 wins in the ACC should be good enough to get them in. Of course he'd say that. I don't agree. In fact, if I heard correctly, no 15-loss team has ever made the tourney?

I believe they also fell in KenPom and Sagarin rankings. Weird deal. Gotta be sympathy / popularity vote. Heck, he's been telling them all year they're great and HOFers. It hasn't gotten old yet.

Josh Pastner winning the ACC COY award tells me one thing: The award is absolutely meaningless.

Whatever else happened here, if we had wins over Duke & UNC, we'd feel we should get an invite too.........but like I said several pages back, this award was based upon the low expectations both in the team & the coach within the ACC.

It's a joke. He should not have been COY, plain and simple. Not hating, just being real...

GT also lost by 29 @ Syracuse, lost at home to a 15-17 NC ST team and finished the season losing 4 out 5. Sounds like COY material to me.
