6400 is really bad for UTEP standards.

Lol, every year this topic. Simple really, Ruston 20k by far the smallest market- Basketball mid-week games and Deep South where football is king

The real question you should be asking- How in the world does Tech have better football attendance than WKU in such a small market?

2995 is beyond bad for a consistent winner...Cannot compare football to basketball attendance wise.....DIdnt your womens team back in the day draw over 5k? What was La TEch average when Karl Malone played? Small town or not 2995 is still bad...

BG-65k WKU-21k; Ruston-20k Tech 12k. Population has not grown in N La, probably net loss since the 80's. Tickets prices are too high for the area, $20 for lower seats. Lower the prices and better marketing might squeeze out another 800.

I paid $5 for the UNT game in Denton

That's why I was one of the few people on this board who never made fun of UTSA's KFC promotion. Schools need to get creative when it comes to marketing their games and if what it takes to attract casual fans is to get free or discounted tickets on a family meal deal then so be it. UTSA tried and it worked at first so I'll always give them credit for that.

Considering that Marshall's avg had dipped down to 3100 after the 2007 season (Ron Jirsa Era) and really never got about 5100 during Jones or Herrion, I'll take a 5800ish avg. Last night there was 6019 in the Henderson Center to watch Marshall play not only the worst team in the conference but one of the worst teams in the nation.

No, I think ODU needs to have an attendance ref at UTEP games and have a cutoff time that doesn't count anyone coming after that. That should work. 05-stirthepot

The officials corrected their own mistake and no extra second was played. I find it odd that midaway through the season UTEP was on a 12 game losing streak. The longest losing streak in over 70 years. At one point we were one spot away from being the worst basketball team in the country. We still managed to lead the conference in attendance for a fourth straight year. We had a terrible ooc schedule filled with a bunch of no name teams we lost to. Even in one of our worst seasons we can outdraw a top 130 squad in ODU. Next season when we return to winning 20+ games per season good luck trying to keep up.

Not sure the last time attendance was this low but it is understandable. Starting the year off so poorly does not attract fans. This year's attendance was 1,000 lower on avg than last year and that was about 1,000 lower than the year before that. Not a good trend.

Next years attendance will get back to the 8k range if, and it's a big if, Floyd keeps the current players in school. 7 of the top 8 players return and some very good recruits coming in. The problem is, and we all know this, Floyd can coach but he has a very bad habit of running players off before they ever see the court.

RE: Final Season Attendance Numbers
One thing that hurts Tech student-wise is the quarter system. We've been on break since Thursday of last week so the students were at home for the last 3 games. Dorms weren't even open. If you came as a road fan for FIU, FAU, or USM, the "band" you saw was a hodgepodge of volunteers. It's usually bigger (and better-sounding) than that. The Regal Blues (dance team) weren't even there. We face the same problem the last two weeks of the football regular season. Didn't affect us this year since senior day was week 11. What also hurts is students don't show up to basketball games until football season is over, and even then it takes a few games into conference play before they show up.

There's not much to do in Ruston, so a lot of students go home every chance they get.

What irritates me the most is that even with the great tradition of the Lady Techsters, the second-winningest team in women's basketball, student's don't show up much at all for them. Every time I bring it up people say that women's sports suck and that all their wins don't make up for the fact that their sport is "boring." The only Techster game with half-way decent attendance and a great atmosphere was the LSU game.

Its -20 because i have no issue calling out uncomfortable truths. You go to the games i assume? Then you KNOW those are phony numbers. Marshall legitimately has that number of fans and it fills up the lower bowl and half of the upper sections every game. Middles lower section was peppered here and there with no sections full for a game that was between 2 undefeated teams in the conference at the time.

Now, was that an outlier? Maybe, but based on the support i have seen at middle football games, i would imagine it was not an outlier.

Don't take it the wrong way, middle has a really good basketball team this season, and its a farce that people won't get their butts in the seats to support them.

I think we all struggle with student turnout. I know our student turnout this year has been pathetic, and like someone else said, when they do come they are sitting down staring at their phones the whole time. I just don't think this generation cares about lives sports like previous generations have.

Who damn near beat us. Senior night helped with attendance. Our three seniors were all big contributors the last couple years.

You don't know what you are talking about. Did you go to the MT-Marshall game?
Have you been going to games at the Murphy Center for years and seen the REAL crowds of 2,000 for D2 teams? We have an arena that seats 12,000. We had damn near close to the announced attendance of 4,600 for the Marshall game. Obviously, a crowd of 1/3 capacity is going to look small. I don't know how much more we can do to help you understand. But you keep ignoring it. Whatever, lol

We'd do 6000 if we could even compete. I can't even imagine if we were actually good.

Very frustrating.
