Predict the next conference reallignment...
The PAC 12 is the only real P5 conference that doesn't have 14 teams (other than the Big 12), so I see them gobbling up Texas and Oklahoma; what happens next? Does the Little 12 go for Houston and South Florida or Cincy and Memphis? Or do the viable remnants of the Little 12 join up with the American?

I think the next move will be Wichita State to the American.

Then chaos when the big 12 grant of rights expires.

Agreed; that's when the PAC will attack the little 12.

I don't know about WSU, though...

Predict the next conference reallignment...
The next realignment will be along alphabetical lines, which will make the conferences (finally) easy to remember.
It also aligns semi-geographically, at least for teams containing the name of their state.
Rules: 8 members minimum, 16 maximum.
Of course there will be a real 16 team playoff and the bowls can still offer bids to teams who don't make the playoff.
11 conference champions plus 5 at-large berths into the playoff.

Conference A: 10 teams
De-facto championship game:
Alabama-Auburn
De-facto 3rd place game:
Arizona-ASU

Conference B&D: 8 teams
The "B"s were one short so we had to add Duke to make the minimum.
Some under appreciated strength here with Boise, BYU, and Baylor. Somebody's finally getting a playoff bid!

Conference C: 11 teams
C stands for "controversial" as wikipedia includes schools like Fresno State (CSU Fresno) and UCLA here in the alphabetical listing. Clemson or Colorado could take it in any given year. uConn-CentralFla maintain their annual trophy game.

Conference EFG: 10 teams
Great geographical grouping with a bunch from Florida and Georgia, plus ECU for good measure.
Fla-FSU is the big matchup of course.

Conference HIJKL: 16 teams
Houston, Kansas State and LATech are contenders here, but this is LSU's to lose. Will drop to 15 members after Idaho goes FCS.

Conference M: 13 teams
Michigan-Michigan State is still a thing. So is ole Miss-Mississippi State. Best part though is we finally get to see Miami (OH) vs Miami (FL) for serious bragging rights!

Conference N: 12 teams
The nation was looking forward to seeing Nebraska-Notre Dame, but at the last minute The Irish preserve independence by changing their name to a symbol and becoming The Catholic University Formerly Known As Notre Dame. They do NOT change the team colors to purple,however.

Conference OP: 10 teams
A lot of heavy hitters here and I won't even pick a favorite. Good bet to send an at-large pick to the playoff most years. Will be fun to see the Ohio State band spell out the other team's name when they play Ohio. Pitt-Penn St. is now a conference game too.

Conference RS:12 teams
USC-USC could settle more than just name-claim rights many years. Rice-Stanford becomes an annual series.

Conference T: 13 teams
Texas / Texas A&M resume pleasantries, and UT(tu?)&TU argue over shades of orange. TULsa & TULane continue their grudge match. Meanwhile, TCU sneaks away with the whole thing.

Conference UVW: 13 teams
A lot of teams who can be solid and get hot any given year. Have to give Wisconsin the edge as the perennial favorite though several others will have something to say about that.

P. S. Here's the full list:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_...l_programs
Wikipedia is the final arbiter of official alphabetization and also takes over as title sponsor of the national round-of-sixteen playoff.

RE: Predict the next conference reallignment...
The Big 12 expands when it gets a network no one thought it would get (similar to the ACC) and grabs Cincy, BYU, UConn, and Houston to go to 14.
Pac-12 sits as it doesn't want to do anything stupid. MW invites SMU and Tulsa and they accept when they look at the weakened AAC. Navy then goes back to being an independent. The AAC is left with 6 teams. Army won't come, but the conference has options so they grab UMass, Southern Miss, Old Dominion, and App St. That leaves the AAC with 10, C-USA with 12, and the Sun Belt brings back NMSU as a full member to go to 10.

A 20 team conference will never happen; much more realistic is the PAC going to 14 to match the other P5s by taking Texas and OU.

Higgs: that's a pretty nice alignment!

I agree it's gonna be the BIG XII disintegrating. I'll repeat what I usually say:

WVU to the ACC
ISU to the B1G or more likely the MAC
Grab any viable teams from: MWC-E, AAC-W, SBC-W, CUSA-W

There is a 21 team conference for football in the NAIA.
Southern Conference used to have more than 20 teams at one time.

The SoCon was relatively compact, football was young but the conference kept splitting. At some point the numbers make a conference unstable. I think that number is currently around 16. 16 makes it very easy to split in half and have reasonable size conferences.

**Please note I put relatively in italics. That means no one is allowed to comment on or otherwise dispute it! 01-lauramac2

RE: Predict the next conference reallignment...
If UConn isn't blowing smoke up people's ***es, and they may look at conference affiliation, I can see their football returning to the MAC so it can give that conference the chance to extend full membership to James Madison.

I still think CAA's going to crack once it loses another full member VA school, and the fight between public members with football intensifies with the private members without it. Regardless of what Patriot tries to do with football, and how it desperately wants William & Mary, the squabble over Stony Brook and the murmurs that CoC might actually want to return to SoCon (or it's just the latest CAA school who thinks it's in line for A10 greatness) signifies there's still some bitterness going on over there.

So, who knows. But, other than the Big XII eventually falling apart, I see some potential for further shifting in that AEast-CAA-A10 cluster, with Patriot and others lurking around. I don't think that just decided to go away.

In the year 2020, the Big12 will announce it is disolving and all 10 teams except Baylor have found landing spots in a P4 conference

Tex, TT, KSU, ISU --> PAC-16
Kan, Ok --> BigTen (16)
OkSt, TCU --> SEC
WV, ND --> ACC
Baylor --> MWC

1: The B1G invites Missouri. Missouri, not bound by an SEC GoR immediately accepts.

2: While WVU promotes itself as the obvious Mizzou replacement, "sources" indicate that the SEC is actively pursuing KU/OU/UT as 14/15/16.

3. State legislatures in KS, OK, and TX react with KS and OK legislators advocating keeping the BigXII together while the TX legislators promote a UT, TTU, Hou trio.

4: "Sources" indicate the Texas trio is close to becoming an SEC reality. Regents at OU and KU use the threat of being left in a Texas-less BigXII as cover to leave their little brothers. KU commits s to join the B1G as #16 and OU to join the SEC as #14.

5: The Texas trio adds Rice and "sources" indicate that the quartet will join the PAC. Sources then indicate Internal PAC conflict with Cal/Stanford opposing the additions on academic grounds and the SW4 opposing the creation of a new SWC.

6: Flight trackers identify a private craft traveling from Austin to the Bay Area and then returning with no announcement.

7: Few people notice the subsequent SF bound flight originating from suburban Chicago. When the B1G announces a press conference for the following day, people are taken by surprise.

8: The B1G announces the he acquisition of the PAC network with all revenues directed to the two remaining members- Oregon State and Washington State. The B1G then announces its new divisional ali

Key point in all of this. Mizzouri is not bound by a GOR in the SEC. They might consider this to be with rivals Illinois in the B1G. But who would be #16?

I think conference alignment, at least among the P5, will be quiet the next few years. However I do agree with the posters above saying the AAC may grab Wichita. Outside of the P5 it wouldn't surprise me to see a few moves.
