RE: POY
It's gonna be a tight race this year, for sure. With Omar Prewitt sharing CAA Player of the Week honors with Tyler Seibring this week, he becomes the 15th different CAA player to take home CAA POW honors this season. Usually the awards aren't that spread out among league players.

Among those 15, only T.J. Williams, Devontae Cacok, and Seibring have taken home POW honors twice this season. Of that group, Williams, who I picked as my Midseason Player-of-the-Year, is the most deserving right now if I had to choose. The UNCW guys all kind of "split the vote", as you could make a case for Cacok, Ingram, or even Flemmings right now.

By the end of the season you might see Prewitt make a strong case, as he seems to finally be playing at the level he did most of last year.

RE: POY
At this point probably Dixon. UNCW players will take votes away from each other. TJ Williams a strong contender. Chealey could be a dark horse at this point

RE: POY
With T.J. Williams getting hurt and NU starting to fall off, I agree that Dixon is now my top choice. This stands to change in the final 3 weeks though.

RE: POY
Cacock has earned the award

#16 13.9 ppg

#1 Rebounding 11.9 ppg

#1 FG% .769 (#2 .585)

#5 Steals 1.5

#1 Blocked shots 1.8

#1 Offensive Reb - 4.5

#1(tied) Defensive Rebs 7.4

There are only 12 statistical categories listed(not including minutes) and Cacock leads five of them, and is #5 in another. The only area he doesn't lead are as a result of being a center. PPG, 3 point goals made, 3 point goal %, assists.

No other player comes close to Cacock in dominating a game and racking up statistics across the board. He scores, rebounds on offense and defense, blocks shots, get steals, leads the CAA and nation in FG% and is on pace to set an all time NCAA record. He is the only player in the CAA averaging a double/double. Also, it is amazing he scores 13 ppg with so few shot attempts because he makes such a high percentage of his shots. All of this is accomplished by a guy who isn't even top 10 in minutes played, and by a guy who rarely has plays run for him to score. I can't recall the last player who dominated so many categories. IMO, it's not even close. Dixon is a good scorer and shooter, but that's about it. Where else does he lead besides FT%?

If there is a most improved award, Cacock should get that as well.

RE: POY
I love Cacok. His ability to run the floor as a big man is incredibly impressive, he's become a ferocious shot blocker, and it's very clear we're a weaker team when he's not on the floor. And I think he's a lock to be a First Teamer.

But a huge part of his litany of success is the system he plays in and the talent surround him. He gets to play the "fun role" on this team. When things break down for defenses in transition, he gets a perfect pass with which to dunk the ball. He's good defensively, but not great. He grabs a ton of rebounds, but part of that is because he plays in a 4-guard lineup and sometimes he's the only guy available to GET rebounds. The fact that he doesn't play a ton of minutes yet we have had so much success just furthers my point: We have a great team and a great coach.

He's in the conversation for POY for sure, and is easily the league's best overall big man. But I'm not prepared to coronate him as king just yet. With 3 weeks to go he's still got work to do.

RE: POY
Are we now selecting POY based on the style of play and whether they are in a 3 or 4 guard offense? Who cares why or how he is dominating like he is....HE IS. I could go on and on about the stats for other players and why they are in a better position to get theirs, but it's irrelevant.

I am not claiming he is the offensive player of the year or defensive player of the year. Make your case for those awards and the corresponding players if you want. In fact, we can start another thread. This is a POY thread, which is the overall best player in the CAA. Beyond in conference stats, I can't see another player who tops or is near the top of so many categories that are important.

Rebounding on both ends of the court, FG%, blocks, steals and #13 in scoring in the conference. If any other player ranked this high in all those categories, this wouldn't be much of a discussion, but for some reason with the player being Cacock, you think it is.

If it's not Cacock in the lead, make your case with facts for another player, and stack them up against Devontae. For a lot of people, identifying a true post player as POY is hard to do, because they are focusing on the basketball "skills" of the player, instead of focusing on their impact on the floor.

I still think this is TJ's award to lose at this point.

He's been the most consistent all year long and has garnered national recognition.

Cacock and his "star of the night" on SportsCenter may have something to say about that.

I understand what you are saying but the fact is scoring is by far the biggest denominator picking players for poy. Just look at the pow and rookie of the week awards for the season. How many have been picked that were not the high scorers
Right or wrong that is the way it historically is.

Plus Player-of-the-Week awards has a bearing too. Who takes home those awards over the final 3 weeks will be pretty crucial.

POY will be decided in the last 3 weeks. Still too early to tell unlike some past seasons.

RE: POY
T.J. Williams is averaging over 20 points and 5 assists (in all games) which doesn't happen often. The bad news for him is his assist/turnover ratio is ninth out of ten players with enough assists to be listed, and he's not on one of the best teams. The bad news for UNCW's players is deciding who the best player on the team is. Does this open the door for Daniel Dixon? He shoots the ball well, but his assist/turnover ratio is just over 1 (worse than Williams, but Dixon doesn't have assists to be listed). Williams and Dixon average 4.7 rebounds each. Joe Chealey shoots three-pointers and free throws well, but makes only .431 of his two-pointers. He has good assist/turnover ratio, albeit with fewer assists than Williams. He averages only 3.1 rebounds, which even by the standards of a guard isn't much. Towson is in the Top 100 of the RPI but doesn't have any of the Top 15 scorers.

RE: POY
I would think Omar Prewitt (47 points, 14 rebounds in 2 games this week) will win CAA POW this week. That would make him the leading candidate in my eyes.

Despite a rough start to CAA play for Prewitt, he's been absolutely killing it the last few weeks. He's climbed to 7th in scoring, 9th in rebounds, 11th in FG %, and 9th in assists in CAA-only games, and he'll only continue to move up the charts if keeps playing like this. W&M has a fairly easy remaining schedule for him to feast on too (@ JMU, @ Delaware, vs. Hofstra, vs. Towson).

Yup, hard to at least not have him in the conversation with these kinds of statistics. I didn't realize he's the leading scorer in the conference as of today. That's incredible considering he scored 44 total points last year. https://twitter.com/StephenGorchov/statu...2221988866
