RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2016-17
Dragons lose a heartbreaker tonight, 48-45 to Elon at home. Drexel had a poor shooting night, but a lot of that had to do with Elon's really tight perimeter defense. They tried to adjust to Elon's defense, but finding some open lanes, but there were too many missed layups, and way too many turnovers.

It actually counts right now as a top 50 loss for Drexel, but their RPI drops out of the top 50 from 44 down to 65. Elon's RPI jumps up to 24. Drexel heads up to Northeastern on Sunday. NU was one of the weaker teams in the CAA out of conference this year, but they now have a late lead on Towson and have a shot to go 2-0.

Tough loss and a loss that probably limits our chance at an at large. As a mid major you need as many top wins as possible, knowing you will pick up a bad loss or two somewhere along the line. It is definitely not a bad loss but it takes away a good win. It will be a tough conference this year since hofstra and jmu will still be solid and W&M has started off strongly too.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2016-17
Dragons took a business trip to Boston today, and they meant business, manhandling (or women-handling, I guess) Northeastern 63-33. After that tough loss on Friday night, it was great to see them get back to playing they way they're capable of playing against an up and coming Huskies team that had won 4 in a row.

Player of the game was Jess Pellechio. After really strugging most of the year, she scored 20 today on 6-7 from 3 point range. Maybe it was the change of her undershirt was the key to her breaking out of her slump. Jess has always been known for wearing long sleeves under her uniform. Today, she got rid of the long sleeves and showed off her tattoos. Whether it was a coincidence or not, it helped her break out in huge way. Also congrats to Jess for scoring her 1,000th point today. many of those points came during her 1st 2 seasons at VCU.

Also, there was a major upset in the CAA today, with Towson knocking off JMU at home. So just 3 games in, Elon is now the only undefeated team in the CAA. Drexel will get another crack at Elon next Sunday in a huge game that will be televised live on The Comcast Network, via American Sports Network.

Of note tonight, Penn State lost a close one to #4 Maryland. Maryland gave UConn a run for their money a couple weeks ago. Our 23 point win over PSU is still a huge win for this program and shows our ability to compete at the highest level. I am not saying we are there or we could beat Maryland or UConn, but just saying we are really closing the gap on the ability to play with those types of programs.

Our 3 losses are all to top 100 RPI teams. Our revenge game against Elon really will be a huge one to add just another big win to their impressive resume thus far. However, we must make sure to bring it each game and can't look past anyone.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2016-17
I believe that the CAA has done well enough OOC this year, where Drexel or Elon could put themselves in a position for an at-large. JMU could have but their loss to Towson really hurt. I'm thinking that if Drexel or Elon can finish their CAA schedule with just 2 or 3 good losses, and then lose in the championship game, there's a shot for that team to get the at-large bid. I consider Drexel losing to Elon to be a good loss, but losing to let's say, Towson or Delaware, would be a bad loss. I agree that Sunday's game at Elon will be huge, but they can't let up and have many more bad shooting days, especially against really good team.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2016-17
I guess you could say that Drexel pitched 2 perfect games in consecutive games. After beating Northeastern by 30 up on Boston last weekend, they headed down to the the Dub and beat them by 33 tonight, 71-38.

Some interesting notes from tonight's game:
Very early in the game with Drexel trailing 2-0, Jess Pellechio got called for her 2nd foul. Seahawk announcers were mentioning that it put UNCW in a really good position to get Drexel's leading scorer (actually their 2nd leading scorer) out of the game for an entire half. Drexel responded by scoring 16 in a row to take a 16-2 lead. Jess by the way was held scoreless for the game and Drexel still won by 33.

In the first half, Drexel was dominant from 3 point range, shooting 5-11. At halftime, their coach was interviewed and she said that they have to figure out how to stop Drexel from the outside. They did a much better job on Drexel from the outside in the 2nd half, so Drexel just went and dominated the 2nd half from inside the paint.

Drexel turned the ball over just 5 times the entire game.

Can't remember any Drexel team, men or women winning 2 in a row on the road by 30 points or more. Very impressive.

It is impressive but we have to keep in mind those are 2 of the worst teams in the conference, so its refreshing that we put bad teams away.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2016-17
Lady Dragons are back on track tonight after an ugly 70-57 win at the DAC. Charleston was a turnover machine tonight turning it over an unprecedented 28 times, and Drexel who is normally very sure handed turned the ball over 15 times. Drexel's poor shooting and Charleston's rebounding advantage kept COC in the game until about midway through the 3rd quarter when Drexel only lead 41-38. But the stronger Drexel team slowly pulled away in the 3rd and 4th quarters.

Here's a boxscore stat you don't see every day. Despite scoring 70 points, the leading scorer for Drexel was Sarah Curran with just 10. The scoring was shared today with 8 Dragons scoring between 7 and 10 points each. Part of that had to do with Denise being very unhappy with her starters early on and she sat for of them for most of the 2nd quarter.

In the battle of 1 vs 2 down at Elon, JMU handed Elon their first CAA loss, and W&M lost too. So Drexel is now in sole possession of 3rd place, just 1 game out. Ironically, the top 3 teams, JMU, Elon, Drexel are lined up just as predicted in the preseason.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2016-17
Friday's game against JMU feels like a must win. Elon beat us twice so we have no room to keep losing if we want the top seed or any consideration for an at large. Elon is a good team. JMU beat them already. JMU is always a challenge. This is a game we must win to stay afloat in the conference fight as well as the at large talk, which is already nearly dead with the 2 losses to Elon

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2016-17
The at-large chances are going to be really tough. But that's not necessarily because of the Elon losses, but because their at-large opponents have not been very good, and a OOC schedule that looked good on paper has not been as good as advertised. Del State, Niagara, Lafayette have all been terrible. We thought that Vandy was a good OOC loss, but they've now lost 9 in a row in the SEC and are out of the top 100. So those teams have brought down Drexel's RPI so that even when they win, their RPI doesn't improve.

Agree that JMU is a must win. Problem is that the dukes just came off an embarrassing choke job at home to Towson, and I don't see a team like JMU losing 2 in a row at home. Drexel looks so dominant against inferior opponents and their depth is very impressive. But they just can't seem to shake off a few top teams each year in the conference to get them to the next level. These JMU games will clearly to be test to see if they can get there.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2016-17
That game really sucked. I liked their fight to come back, but that was the most pathetic 1st half of basketball that I've ever seem that team play. I thought this year might be different but it looks like more of the same.

When the Dragons play against the bottom 75% of college basketball teams, they look dominant. Their defense is tight and they look like their teaching a clinic when they are on offense. Against the top 25%, they really struggle. Tougher teams destroy their offensive flow, and they seem to panic a bit, which results in a really poor shooting percentage.

I guess they're still strong enough to possibly win the CAA, but an at-large bid is out of the question now. Looks like another trip to the WNIT, which is a huge accomplishment for most teams, but for Drexel it's like...been there...done that.

Drexel beat NU 74-51 today at the DAC. Once again, they beat up on another inferior opponent. Now, if only they could play that well against the top teams in the league.

Kelsi Lidge was out of the game today. She was wearing a sling on her arm. I haven't heard anything yet on her status. But that could be a big loss for Drexel if it's serious.

I couldn't tell if there was a cast underneath. But it was a sling.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2016-17
So finally a bright side to end what has been a disastrous weekend for Drexel Basketball which featured two devastating losses for the men and a horrible loss for the women against a really bad Charleston team.

Dragons beat Cluck U down in Chicken Land, 54-44 to end their 6 game winning streak. Drexel put on a clinic today of showing how "not to lose". After leading 39-22 at halftime, they only scored 15 points in the 2nd half (5 FG's and 20% shooting), but they managed to hold on to the ball and played a strong zone defense down the stretch.

Drexel and Delaware are now tied for 3rd. At this point, it's just a matter of beating everybody who they should beat down the stretch, and preparing themselves to make a strong run in Harrisonburg.

We are expecting the 3rd seed at this point which means either Elon or JMU in the semis. We will have to bring it to cut down the nets.
