Having not gone through this arrangement yet as an independent, it leaves some extra uncertainty since that scenario now will apply to both 2017 and 2018. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. I'm not worried about getting shut out if they are bowl eligible--as the last few years teams below 6 wins have been getting bowl games as the slots all ran out. Its just a matter of which bowl you get in what part of the country against what opponent.

We have a few more schools coming online again with CCU and UAB they will provide some extra wins.
BYU will be frozen out of the bowls if all conferences tie-ins are fulfilled. I think it will happen this year that the bowl tie-ins will all be fulfilled despite having 5 win teams the past 2 years.
Also, I can see 1 MW team getting left out due to the Poinsettia Bowl if the Access Bowl goes to the MW next year.
We'll just have to wait and see. BYU could be sitting out of the bowl with 9 wins....which is why Notre Dame has the ACC for its bowls.

It is highly unlikely that a 9 win BYU would get iced out of a bowl game. Elimination of the Poinsettia bowl for 2017 removes a tie in for MWC and MAC. But if you look the MWC sent sub-.500 teams to bowl games the past 2 years. The MAC has been sending teams for their bowl eligible teams during this same time.

2015 sub-.500 teams in bowl games:
Nebraska 5-7
Minnesota 5-7
San Jose State 5-7
2016 sub-.500 teams in bowl games:
North Texas 5-7
Mississippi State 5-7
Hawaii 6-7
Army 6-5 but with 2 FCS wins
South Alabama 6-6 but with 2 FCS wins

If there was a 9-win BYU team with no bowl tie-ins for either 2015 or 2016, they would get in a bowl over one of the teams above who would be traditionally not "bowl-eligible". Who knows how 2017 plays out but unless there is a significant shift in teams increasing losses and the corresponding wins helping teams who have been sub-.500 get above that mark it would not be an issue.

Hawaii, Army and S. Alabama were bowl eligible and went to the conference contracted bowls. Only 2 5 win teams had to fulfill the shortage. Take out the Poinsettia for this year and BYU sits at home because all the bowl conference tie-ins were filled.

Army was 7-5 so they were bowl eligible.

there are going to be 2 more teams this year. 1 of them in the Sun Belt could really help that conference out- considering they finished with 5-7 and 4-8 teams- having Coastal in there could easily help them get an extra team(or 2) bowl eligible.

They didn't get that 7th win until after the bowl games were assigned because they play Navy a week after all the other teams have wrapped up their seasons--and there was still spots available. The bowl committees would have a hard time having to wait until after the Army-Navy game to make selections if there were enough traditionally bowl-eligible teams to fill slots as they can't offer spots to those who have not met the definition while there are teams who have still available.

Those bowl committee's have no choice in the matter when Army has a designated bowl slot(like in 2017- Armed Forces Bowl). I do agree with you on them not getting a chance if they didn't and there was another team.

Hawaii was NOT bowl eligible. If there had been 80 teams with 6+ wins and at .500, they would have been out. The Bowl eligible rule is not just 6 wins, it's 6 wins(with 1 at most FCS win) and a winning pct of at least .500 overall.

Also, with Army, the bowls could have chosen to take BYU instead of them, as Army didn't have a designated bowl slot in 2016.

In 2016, there were 76 teams who were conventionally bowl eligible. 44 of those were from P5 conferences and 32 from G5 conferences plus BYU and Army.

For 2017, G5 plus Army have a total of 30 bowl tie-ins, not counting conditional relationships. P5 conferences have 48 tie-ins (assuming only one G5 qualifies for an NY6 bowl).

If the P5 conferences can't fill their commitments, any eligible G5 (or BYU) would fill those open slots before any conventionally ineligible team can.

Well, with the Big 12-2 having a CCG next season, that could very well help them get the CFP spot more often and thus leaving the MW with the Cactus Bowl 'unofficially'

So it appears that Coastal Carolina will not be eligible for a bowl in 2017, but UAB will. See links below.

http://www.cbssports.com/college-footbal...-for-2017/
It should be noted that since Coastal Carolina's football transition will begin in 2017, the team won't be eligible for the postseason until 2018.

http://americansportsnet.com/news/coach-...es-in-2017
UAB also will be eligible for a postseason bowl and the Conference USA championship in 2017.

Correct On Coastal Carolina not being eligible for a bowl this upcoming season, but then again none of the other 129 FBS members are eligible for a bowl game for this upcoming football season.

The only difference in the case of Coastal Carolina and the other 129 FBS members becoming eligible to play in a bowl game this upcoming season is that if Coastal wins 6 games this season they are only eligible to play in a bowl game if there are not enough teams with 6 wins to fill all bowl slots. No team with only 5 wins can go to a bowl game before a 6 win Coastal Carolina Team.

Coastal and UAB probably don't win 6 games- but where they impact the bowl race is by losing games to teams that would have otherwise win only 5 games- getting THEM bowl eligible.

Why are there standards for bowl eligibility? If someone wants to schedule an extra game, let them. It's not much different than the status quo anyways.

I'm sure most coaches that finish with 4 or fewer less are gonna prefer to stay home. The bowls have become so diluted in quality, why not just let anyone who wants to go to one go?

Bowls literally bring an entire community, alumni and fans together as a special event. They're still seen and treated as an event by many programs. I'd also add college football fandom in general as tv ratings bear that out even for lower tier bowls.

What you're proposing is an exhibition that removes all the camaraderie, attraction and charm of an event.

An exhibition is signifcantly different than the status quo.

It had some great matchups over the years. It is not the Arizona Bowl.

Yeah, we have too many bowls. It's a shame THIS ONE has to be one of those to see go away.

It was the Holiday Bowl that ended it, they owned the bowl. This is what happens when an organizations owns 2 bowls. If any MW bowl needed to get the axe it should be the Potato.

When SDSU and the MLS team gets the new stadium built by 2020, the Poinsettia will get revived.

That's a shame. The flagship always wins, even if it's fallen over the years.

I'm with everyone who wants to see this trim, but losing a bowl that actually could conduct its business well and provide an exciting product? This wasn't the kind of slimming people had in mind, especially given its relevance.

Seems to me the folks in San Diego are saying they can't continue to conduct their business well with two bowls.
