RE: Poinsettia Bowl goes bust
Arizona Bowl would be fine if it could serve a significant purpose namely a game in the bowl pool.
P5 wants to add some new games. P5 has too many games already. A few will have to drop to the G5.
Foster Farms
Independence
Military
St. Pete
Birmingham
Games in the P5/AAC territory. They'll be the first to cut by the P5. Some would be of good interest to the G5.

It does screw San Diego State from getting into the PAC 12 in expansion talks. If they could have kept the old Charger's stadium? The stadium would have been a P5 status. Why tear down the stadium when you could attract a P12 team or any P5 teams to come and play there when it would have a P5 atmosphere?

This bowl sucked. 400k payout on a Monday? The MWC was scheduled to play the MAC next year. I hope it's the first of 5 or 6 bowls they get dropped. No more losing record teams in bowls please.
Cheers!

No more 6-6 or 6-7 P5 schools to a bowl game please.

I wish people would stop quoting payout's as reasons to dump bowls, we all know by now that schools don't actually get paid that amount of money. 95 percent of it they never see.

RE: Poinsettia Bowl goes bust
I'm an outlier, but I'd rather every FBS team; even if 0-12, play in a postseason game. I just don't think the correct format is the Bowl Game. There should be 10-15 Bowl Games for hosting top 25 matchups. The rest should look like HS playoff championship weekend. 4 games played on the same field throughout a Saturday where fans of different schools get to intermingle and have a fun day of football. Maybe the day starts with a sunbelt vs CUSA matchup followed by MAC vs MWC followed by Indy vs AAC headlined by a P5 matchup.

Yes. Conferences pool the money to be distributed. In some cases, schools may get a majority of the money...ie The MW rep in the Access Bowl gets half of the payout.
Also, the poinsettia had a larger payout....around 700k this year.

RE: Poinsettia Bowl goes bust
Older fans may remember that the MWC dumped a $1.5 million or so payout in the Liberty for $1 million in Las Vegas. What?!?!?! Why would they do that? Because Liberty charged MWC a marketing fee to "promote" the conference and more of the payout was in tickets.
MWC netted less spendable money in the Liberty than they did in Las Vegas.
Few years back, Las Vegas Bowl offered to cut the required ticket purchase and lower the payout but it would net the same cash to the conferences. The Pac-10 balked, they wanted the higher payout announced even though there was not difference in the net proceeds.

The AAC should be the one to give up a slot in the bowl pool for BYU to join and add value to it.
Take advantage of the panic! The MWC, MAC, CUSA, SBC should get together and add Las Vegas, Mobile and New Orleans to the bowl pool with their non CFP champ going to one of those games. Add BYU to the mix to play one of the champs.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G530AZ using CSNbbs mobile app
You seriously think that the AAC is going to give up a bowl slot they want so byu can be helped out. Am I understanding you correctly? Honestly question.
Possibly if they don't want to be in the pool.
I checked lineups for next year and the AAC has 7 bowl games so they could spare 1 if it betters them figuring they'll get the CFP bowl.
AAC 7/12
SBC 5/10
CUSA 6/14
MWC 5/12
MAC 4/12
If nothing changes this is what the G5 will have on the books next year.
Boise State joined the MWC to become an automatic qualifying conference in 2010. Who would have thought six years later they'd be sharing a MWC with Utah State and the Poinsettia Bowl folds?
My guess is a couple of bowls will have to slide from P5 to G5. Foster Farms would make a nice replacement for the Poinsettia. Independence may have to drop to the G5 level.
San Francisco
Tuscon
Shreveport
New Orleans
Mobile
Miami
More of a presence in the LA area but a lot of G5 teams around there.
The AAC is supposed to have 8 tie ins every year, unless the AAC website is wrong.

This change doesn't really impact things for 2017. BYU didn't have a bowl agreement for 2017 and will be looking for an at-large bid or a bid arranged by the TV partners. Having not gone through this arrangement yet as an independent, it leaves some extra uncertainty since that scenario now will apply to both 2017 and 2018. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. I'm not worried about getting shut out if they are bowl eligible--as the last few years teams below 6 wins have been getting bowl games as the slots all ran out. Its just a matter of which bowl you get in what part of the country against what opponent.

We have a few more schools coming online again with CCU and UAB they will provide some extra wins.
BYU will be frozen out of the bowls if all conferences tie-ins are fulfilled. I think it will happen this year that the bowl tie-ins will all be fulfilled despite having 5 win teams the past 2 years.
Also, I can see 1 MW team getting left out due to the Poinsettia Bowl if the Access Bowl goes to the MW next year.
We'll just have to wait and see. BYU could be sitting out of the bowl with 9 wins....which is why Notre Dame has the ACC for its bowls.

Wouldn't getting the G5 bid to a NY6 bowl reduce the likelihood of an eligible Mountain West team getting left out?

Yes. They have 5 spots, they get the Access Bowl they get 6, if they get the Cactus Bowl again that's 7. But even if a 6-6 team gets snubbed, I'm ok with a few bowls getting the axe. I'd rather have that then a Bowl Game that's a 5-7 North Texas vs Army rematch like what happened recently.
Cheers!

No. The MW has had 7 teams get 6 wins or more each year since moving to 12 teams. With now 5 bowl ties-ins, that'll leave at least 1 MW team searching for a bowl if the Access Bowl goes to the MW.

Name a time when the MWC got left out? I remember a few years ago San Jose St playing a bowl game on the east coast because there was a bowl unfilled, and San Jose was available. Now, ONE time, a bowl eligible AAC team (Temple) got left out, but that was when the AAC was just starting up and getting bowls set up. That'll never happen again. Other than that, the problem recently (IMO) has been too many losing record teams going to Bowls. This Poinsetta Bowl shutting down is the start of a few more bowls getting the axe I hope. I'm hoping 2 more. That way everyone playing in a bowl is 6-6 at least.
Cheers!

Sorry, I meant Yes instead of No. But my explanation contradicted myself.
As for when the MW was left out? I can't recall in the past 5 years when the conference went to 12. But, the past couple of years the MW has been lucky to get the extra team to a bowl due to some conferences not able to fulfill their commitments.
This year, I see more 6-6 teams and having all the conferences meeting their bowl commitments.
I have to wonder if there is a group that can buy out the Poinsettia bowl instead of the Holiday Bowl shutting it down for their own personal reasons.

It is highly unlikely that a 9 win BYU would get iced out of a bowl game. Elimination of the Poinsettia bowl for 2017 removes a tie in for MWC and MAC. But if you look the MWC sent sub-.500 teams to bowl games the past 2 years. The MAC has been sending teams for their bowl eligible teams during this same time.
2015 sub-.500 teams in bowl games:
Nebraska 5-7
Minnesota 5-7
San Jose State 5-7
2016 sub-.500 teams in bowl games:
North Texas 5-7
Mississippi State 5-7
Hawaii 6-7
Army 6-5 but with 2 FCS wins
South Alabama 6-6 but with 2 FCS wins
If there was a 9-win BYU team with no bowl tie-ins for either 2015 or 2016, they would get in a bowl over one of the teams above who would be traditionally not "bowl-eligible". Who knows how 2017 plays out but unless there is a significant shift in teams increasing losses and the corresponding wins helping teams who have been sub-.500 get above that mark it would not be an issue.

Army was 7-5 so they were bowl eligible.
there are going to be 2 more teams this year. 1 of them in the Sun Belt could really help that conference out- considering they finished with 5-7 and 4-8 teams- having Coastal in there could easily help them get an extra team(or 2) bowl eligible.

They didn't get that 7th win until after the bowl games were assigned because they play Navy a week after all the other teams have wrapped up their seasons--and there was still spots available. The bowl committees would have a hard time having to wait until after the Army-Navy game to make selections if there were enough traditionally bowl-eligible teams to fill slots as they can't offer spots to those who have not met the definition while there are teams who have still available. It should be less of an issue in 2017 as Army is not playing 2 FCS games. It only is a problem for them if they have 5 wins needing that Army-Navy game for their 6th win.
