Neither Beard or Lukowich are on the roster currently. I don't know about Lukowich, but Beard had been hurt. His first match was against OSU and he lost by TF. Simpson held his own against Missouri last night and something tells me he's won the spot at 125. "Freshman Cory Simpson went toe-to-toe with defending MAC champion No. 7 Barlow McGhee at 125, but gave up a late takedown in a 3-2 setback. "Cory wrestled really hard and put himself in a position to win," Andrassy said. "Eventually he's going to figure it out."
At 141, I was under the impression that Driscoll had the edge but that was based solely on his experience. He did well against Missouri in the loss. "Junior Chance Driscoll suffered his first dual meet loss of the season, a 2-1 decision against No. 7 Matt Manley. In the third period, Manley built up over a minute of riding time, before Driscoll could escape. "Chance almost had a takedown in the first period, before they went out-of-bounds," Andrassy said. "But he's got to get that escape earlier or choose neutral."
Conel is no longer on the roster either so I'm guessing Suglio was told that he was the starter for the rest of the year. Historically, this is the time of year when the roster is finalized so the absence of some wrestlers isn't totally unexpected. At 184, Spohn is probably the best wrestler in the room but he's getting hammered at times in matches by pin or TF. He's too experienced for that and didn't wrestle against Missouri for it, I imagine, as well as over the weekend. Was the benching a wake up call?
James and Tutolo will be fine. They will lose against the better wrestlers throughout the season but come March, it's a different game. The same can be said of Sparkman and Nye. The potential is there but they are going through growing pains.
Monico and Barreiro are still on the roster so that's good, but Jack Harris is off along with the aforementioned Beard. Harris was probably the highest ranked recruit so that's not good...Something tells me that there was a mid-season "Come to Jesus" moment/conversation with the team. Although they lost handily to Missouri, Coach A seemed pleased with the effort.
