*OFFICIAL* Mike Sanford New WKU Head Coach
Cannot believe there is not already a thread but here you go...PC Wednesday expected to announce Sanford as our new HC and 20th HC in WKU's history. He will be the youngest coach in FBS at age 34. He has a very similar resume to Jeff Brohm. Like that he is young, energetic, has recruiting ties in Texas and lots of contacts, and is offensive minded. He will need to probably bring in some more experienced guys for his staff but the dude was main recruiter for Christian Mccafffery at Stanford and also worked with everyone's love Brandon Doughty for his RS season in 2010. I like the hire..

Critics, yes he is young, yes he is unproven, but this formula has worked for us in the past and I really don't see much difference to Brohm's resumes vs his minus MIke is a younger guy. I think our AD made the right hire and the right time to keep our offense going, looking forward to starting our new era Wednesday. Just a guess since he is unproven may start his salary lower then some other and maybe raise the pool money to bring in some top notch assistants, we shall see...

Now official, Press Conference at 4!

Maybe because there's only been speculation so far, no announcement from WKU. You would think that if they were going to announce tomorrow, a news conference would have already been announced. If he is indeed the choice, I will be cautiously optimistic since he is another "training wheels" coach that we're taking on to raise!

I think he would be a good fit, has lots of great pieces here at WKU to work with and its not a rebuild situation. I think he would be a players coach and is really what this type of program requires to be successful

RE: Mike Sanford New WKU Head Coach
If this is indeed who WKU has selected, it will be such a progressive hiring approach.

A pick like this signifies that you are not worried about changing coaches again in 3 to 4 years, but that you are looking to continue your upward trend as a program.

Doesn't necessarily means that success, nor failure is etched in stone...just shows that you are progressively thinking. This pick will bode well on the recruiting trail...ginning up excitement and mystique to potential and current recruits...the lifeblood for any college sport program.

Kinda jealous to be honest...USM seems to take a pitch-and-yaw affect. We yawed with Fedora and Monken and pitched with HWSRN and JHOP-which we are playing the long game. I'm hopeful that Hop executes the long-game well with some immediate impact, and not just sustainability.

This is a good move IMHO. You will have bumps in the road early with him, but he will come out big time in the end.

When I 1st read this I was thinking of Mike Sanford who is HC at Indiana State and is 18-30 and before that was at UNLV and was 16-43 there.

RE: Mike Sanford New WKU Head Coach
I think the big difference between Brohm and Sanford goes back to the years Brohm spent in the NFL. If you are a back up QB in the NFL and you know you want to be a coach, you have an unbelievable opportunity to pick the brains of the smartest football guys in the world. He played under some good coaches and also would have learned how they handle everything from the press to the front office to delegation to scheduling everything.

Sanford could be great, but I just think Brohm was a fantastic coach who has Urban Meyer potential down the road.

Brohm turned out to be far more successful than most thought he would be just because he didn't have any previous Head Coach Experience. Now, Except for the "NFL" handle; Mike Sanford appears to have much the same general bio. Let's face it. Always a Crap Shoot when your next Hire has never been an HC. Otherwise, the Boy looks "Purty Good"!

I really thought it would be Paul Petrino from Idaho... I thought it would've been less of an offensive transition from Brohm to Petrino, and a better hire overall. Heck, he took Idaho to an unexpected 8-4 record, a bowl game, and averaged nearly 30 points per game... and he did with athletes that don't have a lot of talent.

I wonder what he could've done with WKU's athletes?

We flew him in when we hired Willie Taggart. Western took a RB coach out of Stanford over Petrino as an OC at Arky with this brother that time. I heard stories out of Louieville back then that he was a bigger arsehole than Bobby when they coached there together.

So I'm by no means surprised we didn't go with him. I really like this hire. There's risk with every hire but I like this young man. Came up through Boise so knows what it takes to win in a Bowling Green like market.

I really like having former QBs as a coach. At our level I believe you need a great offense. You're not gonna just line up smash teams like Bammer. We still have plenty of offensive tools left over for young Mr. Sanford to score some points.

I was NOT excited at all about lifetime assistant coach Ed Warinner. Very glad we didn't go in that direction. I personally am very happy with how it turned out.

If you think Bowling Green and Boise are similar markets, you really need to go to Boise someday.

I plead total ignorance. I just imagined them as a small market school. They certainly haven't been P5 as far as resources. That's more what I meant.

My apologies. I figured being at a school like Boise would more prepare him than Ed Warinner who was used to the Ohio State resources.

Full disclosure: I'm retired at 57. I have a bucket list. Boise is not on that list. Possibly due to my ignorance. Maybe it should be.

Boise metro market is 660k+. That is the most glaring difference.

Good lord. I had no idea. Take it all back. Fire him and hire Warinner.

Hell. It must be everyone in the state. Is Idaho's state population over a million?

If you take Warren County and the counties that touch it that population is over 250k but I wouldn't exactly call that BG metro.

exactly the same thoughts i had on petrino. But this is probably the best hire ive seen for the season.

The stories about Paul are fairly common knowledge in Arkansas. Bobby may have been the one with Volleyball interns riding the back of his motorcycle, and Paul was just an A-Hole.

He's done well at Idaho, but you guys would be right to stay far, far away.

If you guys did indeed hire an ND assistant, at least you hired a guy from the right side of the ball. Their defense was terrible this year.

I'm confused. Paul Petrino is from U of Idaho. Which is located in Moscow, Idaho which is 300 miles north of Boise. Moscow only has a population of 24,000, plus it's part of the Spokane, WA media market.

Now I'm confused. What does the Moscow, ID info have to do with the hiring of a coach that spent time in Boise?
