Richmond and Norfolk State had more options than us. This was a couple months ago. When I went back 2 weeks ago there were no Richmond shirts, no UNC shirts and only 1 Norfolk State shirt. UVA and Tech still had the majority but not by a ton. They definitely realized they needed to carry more ODU stuff.

Right but was it quality stuff? Top brands like Under Armour, Nike, Adidas or Columbia?? I went to the Dicks at Town Center and they had some ODU stuff but it was just garbage. They wanted $100 (on sale now for $60) dollars for a jacket that was not a top brand (ODU Jacket) worth maybe $25. If it was a quality $100 Nike or Under Armour Jacket I would have bought it.

Don't remember. I was in there for the Field and Stream part and just decided to see if they had any ODU stuff.

ODU also needs to get the same flags for the light posts all over campus. Not different ones for Arts, the village, and other things. Just 1! flag and lots of them!

Yes. ODU would do well to also give banners or house flags free to any bar or restaurant that wants one. Thats like a free billboard for the school. Its well worth a $25 banner for that kind of exposure. Ive thought about buying them in bulk in and asking places that have other schools up if they will add ODU. If they say yes, just pull one out of my trunk and give it to them. It comes across as authentic pride and positions the school as a place the area embraces and its alumni support. You could get hundreds of banners for the cost of a billboard for one month.

They should also be giving all incoming freshman free nice looking T-shirts that they will actually wear. Send one to every incoming student before they arrive and ask them to put it on social media with a specific hashtag. That word of mouth promotion and genuine excitement about ODU is priceless.

They do give out shirts for incoming freshman, or at least they did when I went to orientation. It was a really nice shirt, navy blue with the ODU full logo with the lion on the front and on the back it had the number 13 (for 2013, the year I was supposed to graduate) and "ADMITTED" like a last name on a jersey. I lost it but I really liked it an wore it a lot. While I was on campus is saw shirts for 2012, 2014, and maybe 2015. I'm not sure if they do it anymore

I think the problem is, if the school gives them away then they can't charge people to buy those flags/banners etc.

I think 1 big hand out would get the pride thing going, and maybe cause some neighbor envy (might inspire them to buy one?). When those banners / flags fade or get damaged, people might be more prone to buy one as a replacement.

Its not like BWW, Green Turtle, AJ Gators, Chichos, etc are buying ODU gear anyway. Only give them to businesses. There are pizza places on the OBX that hang college banners from the rafters, including VT, UVA, ECU etc. We're the closest D1 school to there. Seems if we give them one and they hang it, all those tourists see it and associate us with the beach, a good time, and all those other schools too. Heck, I wouldn't even be opposed to hiring some students, paying them minimum wage and giving them T-shirts to walk up and down the VB resort strip in the summer and just have a good time. Again, cheap yet authentic promotion.

I was visiting family in High Point last weekend and there's a ton of businesses that have purple "I (heart) High Point University" banners and signs. Not sure if it's part of a program or if they give them out, but it was hard to miss them -- and I never actually saw the campus, so it wasn't just in the immediate area.

The HPU President came from a Business Background and understands leveraging relationships and marketing to improve the institution. 20 years ago HPU only accepted crappy kids and had a crappy campus. Now they can't keep the kids away and have an amazing campus. Their president reinvented the place and ran it like a business to make it a better college.

This is a great idea. It would be cool if they did that and also sent an online code for the bookstore to for like $25 or something to buy more stuff online if they wanted.

I think thats whats frustrating for those of us at ODU 20 years ago. We came on the promise that it was moving toward greatness. Told that we were the next big research university in VA and our engineering and computer science programs were equal to VT and soon to be recognized as such. Education, Healthcare and Marine Biology were going to be nationally respected programs. ODU was going places, and it has progressed nicely. Its just that in the same time frame schools such as GMU, VCU, CNU, and too some extent Radford & Longwood have improved themselves at a much faster rate and in too many cases caught up to and passed ODU. I didnt expect football, so thats good, but academically and athletically I would have expected to be where Temple or GMU is by now. Koch had us going in a good direction academically, and Runte had us going in a good direction in terms of campus infrastructure and student pride. Broderick supposedly is good with the politics, though we have yet to see a huge improvement in support from Richmond. Broderick has also presided over us finally getting into USNWR Tier One, so I'll give him credit for that too, though I think Koch and Runte laid the groundwork for that.

Rumor is that HPU is trying to get into the CAA, and given the massive capital and marketing investments they've made, I could see it. Definitely can't imagine they have long-term ambitions that include the Big South.

I know other schools have done this, why not ODU? T-shirt exchange

Would be great for incoming freshmen or transfers

"Come exchange either two high school t-shirts or one (non-ODU) college t-shirt and receive a new ODU spirit shirt in return"

I like this idea, lots of restaurants and bars put up college gear (banners, flags, pennants etc.) but it requires someone to bring it in for them. We as alumni should take opportunitys to spread odu pride by purchasing flags and bringing them into logal bars and restaurants. Its starts with us and eventually people will notice and students will as well.

I was visiting family in High Point last weekend and there's a ton of businesses that have purple "I (heart) High Point University" banners and signs. Not sure if it's part of a program or if they give them out, but it was hard to miss them -- and I never actually saw the campus, so it wasn't just in the immediate area.

I was up in NYC area for Thanksgiving. I don't know if something was going on, but I saw no less than a dozen HPU stickers on cars on the NJ turnpike and approaching the NYC limits (300+ miles away from the campus...). Ive never seen that many in a week for ODU even within a mile of the campus. Not saying they are not there, but I just don't see them.

I sort of agree with you, but I personally am not going to use my money to advertise for ODU and help out a business I'm not associated with.

Thats ok, myself and others will bite the $25 bullet and pick up your slack. A few Charlotte bars and restaurants will be sporting some ODU flags soon.

RE: ODU Brand/Image Improvement Thread
The ODU Alumni association should send out window stickers to all alumni that are registered through the association. I do a lot of traveling through out Va. VT, UVA, And JMU stickers dominate the roads. Followed by VCU, RU, GMU, and CNU. ODU Stickers are very rare. It is a simple and extremely low cost form of advertising. People do look !

You are absolutely right. Though I will say that CNU does something smart in that their parking stickers double as a car sticker. They're not all done for pride purposes. ODU does the hang tags (I guess they still do). The thought was that people were stealing the parking stickers at ODU, or people wanted to use it in multiple cars. Well a simple solution is to do a removable parking window cling that can be adhered to the inside of the car. Then every car (faculty/staff/student) associated with ODU will be showing off their Monarch stickers.

I'll also say that up here in the DC area, I see about 2 ODU stickers a week. I surprisingly see about the same amount of ECU stickers, maybe even more. UMD, VT, Penn St and UVA dominate the area with a good representation of JMU and Towson, Salisbury too (I live MD). Not a ton of VCU, but more than ODU. Been seeing a little more Radford lately as well. Maybe half as much as ODU, but occasionally. A lot of GMU in NoVa, but I don't see much in DC or MD. Probably less than JMU.
