WBB Game 3 ODU (1-1) @ Duke (4-1)
Duke finished last season with a 20-12 record including an 8-8 record overall in the brutal ACC. They missed the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1994 and they declined an invite to the WNIT. Most teams would love to finish in Duke's shoes but this was a disappointment by there lofty standards. Part of the reason for Duke's "struggles" was they had a high number of injuries as only three players appeared in every single game last season. They also turnved the ball over 18.5 per game due to inexperience.
Duke had one of the top recruiting classes in the nation last season so the expectations were high. But two players transferred (including all ACC 6'6" Azura Stevens who transferred to UCONN) last season. One player left Duke midway through the 2014-15 season to Ohio State. Plus if go back to the 2013-14 season one player played one game and decided to go to Ohio State. Another left to play at Baylor. But it's really the Stevens transfer that got everyone talking that there might be something wrong at Duke. It was unexpected...to say the least.
Duke's human resources did a full evaluation of the women's basketball program based on claims of player and assistant coach mistreat by head coach.Joanne McCallie (Several top assistant coaches have left the program in recent years. Joy Cheek, Shannon Perry, Trisha Stafford-Odom and Samantha Williams) Assistant coaches come and go all the time. That by itself wouldn't raise too much of a red flag.
We may never know the results of the evaluation since Duke is a private institution thus they have no obligation to share the results. But the fact that McCallie is still employed at Duke is perhaps a message in itself. (?)

So yes Greenwell is your All ACC SG who has the lowest shooting percentage of all the starters But that is because she has taken 47.5% of the team's overall three point attempts. At 6'4" Chidom, Mathias, and Cooper will all rotate in and out. Chidom is a force on defense (as evidence by her 3.6 bpg) and Odom is a top ranked recruit would should be in the team's starting line-up if she wasn't a freshman. This team has great shot selection as a team they are shooting 48.4% from the floor, they average 20.0 assists per game, 14.4 steals per game, and 44.8 rpg. It's a complete team that pounds the ball inside. The have the taller more athletic players, so this is going to present all sorts of match-ups nightmares for ODU. I would feel better if Ajemba was playing in this game...but I don't think she is.
On defense...yes they can play man, but what McCallie loves is the match-up zone. That is her go to. If ODU can play in the high post area, that will help us break through. But easier said than done with this team.
When I was scouting this team my first thought was....Al Brown is still coaching?!? For those that don't know he is the only person to have coached on a men's and women's basketball team to play in the national championship. (On the men's side, 1969 Purdue vs UCLA and on the women's side Tennessee 4 times and Michigan St in 2005) Yes you read that right...1969.....he has been around the game for a very long time....
And lets not forget. Playing the talent level of Duke is one thing. Playing at Cameron Indoor Stadium is another thing all together. Fans that sit right on top of you looking down at you. Loud students on the sidelines. It's an uncomfortable place to play for visiting teams. For KB's first road game of the season, they don't get much harder in terms of location....
