Regardless of the outcome of those games it will be a nice bump to their SOS and RPI. I don't mind them playing these at all even though it's a likely loss.

Exactly. You have to play those games to at least give yourself a chance. At worst it helps boost the OOC numbers even if you lose.

RE: CAA Basketball 2016-2017
Ideally, you play about 3 big non-conference games, and win 1 of them. So yes, while scheduling Duke and Louisville completes 2/3 of that mission, you want a more "winnable" big game out of conference. Unless of course they beat Duke, in which case, mission accomplished!

You have to play AND beat the big boys to get an at-large bid and/or help legitimize the CAA in a given season. Because we only have ETSU and Clemson as our "big" non-conference games, and because ETSU isn't considered a marquee opponent, we really need to win both games to have any shot at an at-large bid. Our margin of error is small.

Though I do suppose the Middle Tennesse and Saint Bonaventure games could turn into really good non-conference opportunities as well. Just depends on how the season plays out. And W&M also plays @ Rhode Island.

Coach Shaver is a Dean Smith disciple, so, there is an effort every year with our program to play a game close to each of our senior's home territories. It isn't always the case that our 3 big OOC games are on the level of our games this year, but Louisville was this year's game close to Omar's home.

RE: CAA Basketball 2016-2017
I still think the SEC is ripe for UNCW and the CAA to play winnable games against recognized schools. And the possibility exists to negotiate for some home and away trade offs. Play and beat an Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi State and you can pack a coliseum along with play a winnable game. I could see, for example, Mississipi State agreeing to a 2 for 1 deal with UNCW.
I still remember UNCW playing LSU at home in the US Airways tournament while I was at UNCW.

Yes, but it's honestly better for your RPI to lose to say #2 than it is to win against a bottom of the barrel SEC team that is say 170.

The problem is these games are no win situations for many of these schools. Darrin Horn did this all the time at South Carolina.

He lost to us the first year at Carolina First Arena, Wofford his second year, Furman the third season, and Elon his final season. Yes, South Carolina played at Elon's tiny gym.

UNCW has carried a high enough RPI the past two years that a win or a loss would actually help some of these SEC schools. Strike while the iron is hot.

Oh ok. That's a really cool policy, and one I wasn't even aware that Dean Smith did that.

Coach K used to do this as well, not sure if he still does. I remember (probably 6-7 years ago now) he played in the Alaska shootout tournament just because he had a senior from Alaska and wanted to let him play in front of his family. Would be nice if more coaches did things like this, especially for those far away they recruited.

I think it does. Remember, the selection committee has de-valued the influence of RPI lately, and more or less care about who you're beating "on paper". So if we beat a middle of the pack SEC school, that serves us better than beating a 100-ish RPI mid-major.

What about beating a mid to lower SEC team vs Losing to a Duke, Louisville etc. My original statement was that losing to one of them is better than winning to lower tier.

The loss to a top school does very little for you. So while I can never begrudge a team going to play a team like U of L or Duke, you're not doing it for your resume.....UNLESS you win.

It helps the RPI more than beating a 200 or so RPI school.

The committee just doesn't care much about the RPI, ESPECIALLY if you're a team trying to "game" the system.

So if the choice is between playing Duke and playing a lower tier SEC school, yeah, I guess for resume purposes I'd play the team I feel I can beat. But I'd rather have 1-2 of BOTH types of games.

Now, if the choice is a one-and-done game against Duke OR signing a 2-4 year agreement with a lower-tier SEC school, I take the latter any day of the week. That's a good way to boost your resume over several years, since you'd expect the school you sign the agreement with to hopefully improve and help your resume in future years, even if they're not very good the first year of the deal.

RE: CAA Basketball 2016-2017
I think the selection committee has decided that teams playing a full year schedule in a P5 conference, like the SEC, are playing an overall better slate of teams for a whole season than almost all midmajors. Therefore, a win over a mid level SEC team is greater than a win over a high RPI midmajor that has built its' resume' on a weaker overall schedule. And, it's better than a loss to a top ranked Duke or Louisville, whom you never had a real chance to beat anyhow.

I think the RPI is more important than you guys are giving it credit for. It's not an end all be all, but playing a Duke etc, IMO not only makes your RPI better, but also gives you better experience playing against top level comp. But, i digress. Bottom line is most don't have this problem because they generally don't want to play mids that are good.

Pretty much. The committee isn't going to reward you for just scheduling a one-and-done guarantee game against an elite school. SWAC teams do that all the time; it's not hard to do.

It only helps your overall resume if you beat that elite team, OR if you also play and BEAT someone from a big boy conference or another NCAA Tournament-caliber team. Then when people say "Who did you play, and who did you beat?" You have 2/3 of the things you need on your resume as a mid-major hoping to get an at-large bid. The 3rd item you need is to dominate your conference.
