Took a drive around UTA yesterday
First time I have seen their campus. Not a lot of green space but otherwise not bad. Looks like it was mostly built in the 60's. Had to make the drive to Maverick Stadium, it's close to the intramural fields and baseball and softball.

Their was a band practicing on the football field, does UTA have a marching band???

Also, you guys have to get football going again, what a nice setup. Fraternity Row is in the shadows of the stadium, you guys could create a great game day atmosphere. If your attendance was a total of half your student population you'd be good. Wouldn't take much work to add 10k seats to your stadium.

Now get on it, I'm looking forward to it.

And yes, I know, this has been discussed, but I just like starting threads.

uta kept the marching band going after dropping football and they have a pretty good music department there. for football games the band would march down greek row to the stadium gathering up a crowd as they went. it was pretty cool back in the day. the school dates back to 1895 and there are a few buildings left from the 20's and 30's but it has grown so much that everything is mostly pretty new.

Would make for a nice conference with easy dividing lines. I like it, sorry Little Rock.

That would be fine. Shouldn't be hard to keep UALR on the nonconference schedule for BBall, Vball, and baseball every year or every other year. There's no chance they will be getting a football team anytime soon.

Green space depends on where you are. The title of the thread says you drove. If you didn't park and get out, you missed a lot. The eastern and western edges have a lot of green space and the Library Mall is a great place to just hang out and study.

Greek Row is about the only positive to Maverick Stadium's location. Is is buried from the main campus and unless you know where it is, you can't see it anywhere. The same is true for most athletic buildings. UTA planned their location very poorly.

We have a fantastic, award-winning marching band. There are many members of the unit that are happy to not have a football team, as it allows them freedom from the constraints of a halftime show.

Things have changed much since the program was disbanded. For the last three years, UTA has set a total attendance record in all team sports. If you exclude men's basketball, I believe it is the last five years.

Maverick Stadium is a good facility, but would need investments to make it up to FBS standards. I wrote a blog post about it over the summer.

RE: Took a drive around UTA yesterday
The campus interior has always been quite nice, but until recently UTA did not have a lot of curb or drive-around appeal. However, I think we have developed much-improved curb appeal with 1) the College Park District on the east, 2) the addition of the Engineering Research Building on the north. Both these enormous projects also took out a lot of trash. Other improvements include the beautification of Greek Row Drive (landscaped median added). It has been fun to see this transformation. I also give a lot of credit to Facilities. They are very diligent with the grounds and usually have improvement projects underway at any given time. But, the original post is correct in a sense: the campus is fairly dense and there are not many vast open spaces. However, you gotta be on foot to see the quads and courtyards.

Excellent synopsis. The campus has improved greatly since I graduated in 2003.

I came in on the north side of campus, drove east to the east side, it is new with the shops and "college" restaurants. Along the south side of campus to the intramural fields and Mav stadium.

Frat row was actually a nice ride threw, and there is residential area around the side of campus.

How can you guys a start a grass roots swell for football, someone get with the SGA and get this ball moving.

RE: Took a drive around UTA yesterday
I'm guessing your route was Cooper Street then a left on UTA Blvd or Mitchell Street then out Maverick Stadium, intramural fields, Clay Gould Ballpark and Allan Saxe Field via Mitchell Street or Greek Row Drive.

In that case, you definitely missed the heart of the campus. I'd out the Library Mall up against any in terms of tranquility, space and landscaping. The Second Street Mall / University Mall is a very nice pedestrian experience. Many of the older academic buildings are built in the form follows functions mentality and very pedantic. The new buildings however are much more striking and can actually add to the flair of the campus with the older buildings.

The two main flaws as I see them are lack of on-campus housing and fall activities. The first isn't a lack of numbers (5,000 or so), but the percentage is very low per total enrollment. The second is lack of fall activities. We have some unique campus traditions, but those are one-event deals. With just volleyball, it can make it tough to develop an athletic following throughout the semester.

Per your last point, the last true attempt was a student vote in 2004 that would have allocated a $2/hr student fee for football, W soccer and W golf. It was an outgoing SC president that spearheaded the measure. The then new incoming-president Spaniolo commissioned the Nienas report, https://www.uta.edu/sportsexpansion/spor...ansion.pdf

In January 2005, he stated the University would not pursue a football program at that time, but rather embark on a major facilities improvement for athletics, starting with College Park Center. A lot of FB proponents were disappointed, but in all honesty, UTA had some of the worst athletic facilities in all of DI.

College Park Center, IMHO, is one of the best basketball venues in the country.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_Park_Center

Clay Gould Ballpark has received numerous improvements and is getting to be a mid-level DI venue.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clay_Gould_Ballpark

Allan Saxe is on the verge of becoming one of the better softball venues in DI, trailing only the most-attended programs.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_Saxe_Field

Golf has recently debuted a new locker room in space vacated by the Athletic Department at the Gilstrap Center, which is underneath Maverick Stadium's west stands.

Really, all that is left is locker rooms onsite for the tennis teams at the UTA Tennis Center.

I think the department is moving in that direction, but making sure that the entire athletic program is standing strong. Women's golf debuts next academic year, making the first time a new sport will play at UTA since 1983. The pace is slow for a lot of us, but that's the way they are headed.

RE: Took a drive around UTA yesterday
the Fall 2015 student housing survey has UTA with 5,972 beds om campus and 5,901 of them filled

2,050 are private with 2,020 of those filled and 3,922 are university owned with 3,881 filled there are 597 private currently under construction and 1,000 university owned planned for construction through 2016 and 141 university owned will be withdrawn from use in 2016

so that would get UTA to 7,428 in the near future

that would be behind A&M 10,901 (12,010 now 1,100 to be removed).......Texas State 8,629 (6,831 now and 598 under construction and 1,200 planned through 2016).........UT 8,141....UH 8,008......TTU 7,914 (they actually have 300 more for an Honors Dorm, but it was fast tracked after this report so it is not in the 7,914 number).......UTD 7,544 (6,154 now 1,400 planned or under construction)........UTA (7,428 now or in planning).........and ahead of north Texas state 6,216 (they have plans for more, but not at the time of this report)

no others are close to the above numbers

so UTA is actually making more progress than most would think on student housing....UTD is the one that I think would surprise most people

UTA has been growing so fast though it is hard to keep up especially after being so far behind on housing for so long in 2010 it was 4,164 with 618 under construction for a total of 4,782 so that will be about 2,800 new beds in 6 years

One thing about UTD is that there is no off-camous private housing near campus. Therefore, the university is filling the void and doing the construction. Around UTA, for instance, is a lot of private housing on the edge and in the near vicinity. UTD does not have that, so their student housing numbers are pumped up more than they might otherwise be.

this is true

they have built a ton of housing though, but really to come close to escaping the reputation as being a "commuter school" or being a school filled with kids that mostly live at home and go to UTD they pretty much had to build their housing on their own there was not even a place to build some apartments close by that would be for students mostly

to the west is the A&M Experiment Station, to the south and east is fully developed neighborhoods and to the north is the train tracks, then the freeway and then fully developed neighborhoods

all the worse is UTD has a ton of raw land and their actual buildings sit in the middle of that raw land so even if someone managed to build some apartments, a private dorm, a bunch of college kid bars, some book stores and some other college kid stuff to make an area for them well hell it is still 2,000 yards from there to any actual building on campus unless that development takes place ON university owned land

there best hope for that to happen would be getting to 30,000 students with a major need for more campus housing and A&M eventually selling that experiment station land off to private developers and it gets built there

I visited UTA for a student union convention some years ago when I was at TXST. Was very impressed with their rec center and campus feel.
