Dothan Eagle: Sun Belt brand shows growth with TV deals
Interesting... could this be pointing positively toward a decent renegotiated TV contract in the near future?

Quote:Sun Belt brand shows growth with TV deals

TROY – Perhaps because of the conference’s performances against Mississippi State, Clemson and Tennessee this year, it appears more people want to watch Sun Belt football.

Sun Belt Conference commissioner Karl Benson, in an interview with the Dothan Eagle before Troy’s 52-6 win over New Mexico State Saturday, said ESPN recently acquired the rights to broadcast this week’s San Diego State vs. South Alabama game (7 p.m. Saturday, ESPNews). With that addition to the lineup, 11 Sun Belt games will be on ESPN’s “linear” networks this season, a first for the conference in the current TV contract structure.

“ESPN’s contract with us calls for them to be able to select a maximum of 10 games, and they’ve never reached the maximum,” Benson said. “Now they’ve exceeded it with San Diego State-South Alabama as the 11 th game.”

We are also about to start expanding this....

TROY, Alabama – Beginning this fall, Troy fans will be able to watch multiple home events on ESPN3 as Athletics Director Jeremy McClain announced Wednesday an expanded relationship between Troy and ESPN. The first streamed event will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 5, when the Troy volleyball team hosts Tennessee in Trojan Arena.

The new collaboration will allow fans the ability to watch HD streams of Troy Athletics events on ESPN3. The events will be produced in-house by Troy University students who are enrolled in a specialized sports broadcasting class.

Isn't it amazing what happens when dead weight in North Texas and the F_U schools are allowed to move on?

Would've been interesting to have WKU and MTSU with App and Southern which would've allowed NMSU and Idaho to have stayed out of the SBC. C-USA would've fallen apart and the Belt would likely be even with the MAC.

Yeah, SBC worked a deal with ESPN to allow this starting last year. Arkansas State, Georgia State, and App State were the three to take advantage of it.

Nonsense. Clearly since CUSA's TV deal tanked, ours will, too.

App State didn't even last the whole year last year

Does ESPN pay for this? How does it work with your digital network?

I believe as long as you produce it they will show games for free.
That is why D2 games and FCS match ups are on ESPN3 along with volleyball and wrestling.
The MAC schools all had to upgrade their press boxes to produce their own games.

Sounds like the SDSU game they are producing and paying extra maybe?

The payout can only increase since it's pretty much zero, right?

Yea. I miss WKU and MTSU. F_U was not a fit. Nor were they ever going to be one for our schools. They're better off (and we are too) with them in CUSA where they can provide recruiting bases for Marshall. UNT could have been a fit, but they were just so bad for so long....

Either way, I'm pretty happy with our membership right now. I would have preferred that we kept NMSU, but I understand the benefits of the smaller, more compact conference.

Basically, I think the model is the MAC for the Belt. Build a league that makes sense and is filled with teams that want to be in the conference and who want to play with each other. Use the stability to grow as a conference and to allow rivalries to flourish.

Right.

But I don't expect the Belt to get much more money in the next go around. Lets not kid ourselves. Basically, we've got parity with CUSA in TV money. Next up, finding a bowl tie in with a P5 conference. Do that, and we're pretty much even.

If WKU and MTSU had stayed and the SBC didn't have NMSU and Idaho, we'd have the following Massey composite ranking

61.05 - AAC
83.93 - SBC
84.54 - MAC
86.02 - MWC
106.04 - CUSA

What is it about FAU that you miss? Anf, honest question, what is really the difference between FAU and FIU? The former is in Boca Raton, while the latter is in Miami, and FIU is a little bigger. But what else? They're just names on a webpage to me, neither having ever made a headline of any significance, save for the FIU brawl with U of Miami several years back. What makes one different from the other, from a fan's perspective?

While I don't miss either FIU or FAU, FAU has a few advantages over FIU. FAU has one good athletic program (baseball) and its athletic department isn't a total g-damn circus (FIU's Athletic Dept. appears to be filled with low performing but entrenched clowns that make boneheaded decision after boneheaded decision, apparently without any consequence to their careers at FIU). FAU at least sometimes tries to not suck. FIU had one good season, and that was largely because a 5 star recruit decided to let his infant son pick where he played by blindly picking between two hats. FIU managed to stumble into a competent coach...and then proceded to fire him unjustly. FAU also seems to have a few more fans and is over an hour from the other competition in the area (Miami and the Dolphins).

Both massively underperform for the recruiting, home game, large student size and major market advantages they should have. But FAU appears to do better.
