RE: #6 Houston @ Texas State - ESPNU Game Thread
We were Never going to beat Arkansas or Houston . . . Period. Those two games tell us exactly Nothing about this team, at least not anything we didn't know going in, which is we are small and inexperienced, and rebuilding. Next up, an FCS opponent and conference play.

We should go into conference play with a 2-2 record, which I still contend almost every fan would have gladly taken at the beginning of the year, as most saw us 1-3 OOC.

To all you out on the ledge, try and keep some perspective, this is a squad predicted to only win 3-4 games all year. We still have 75% of our year to play . . .

If Withers can get 5 or more wins this season, call it a successful season heading into year two of the rebuild.

At this point in the year, we are exactly where we were expected to be, actually better, as most predicted we'd lose at Ohio.

Chill . . . .

Arkansas played terrible in their opener against La Tech but they got the win and never looked back after beating a ranked TCU team. UH is ranked #6 for a reason and they came in and showed us that reason. Your asking our bad Oline to play one dimensionally against ranked teams with an entire game worth of stats missing on top of that... We could have done better, no question, but I think your getting a little caught up in the 127 ranking so early and under the circumstances.

A&M dominated Arkanasas. Dang Aggies lol

Lost our OLB, Jr. Easy Anyama, for the season to an Achilles injury. He had surgery today.

So much for coming out of Arkansas and Houston w/o injury . . . Especially hurts when you're as thin as we are . . . .

Next up needs to step up. . . .

Hoping for a speedy recovery that is a tough loss. Any chance of a medical redshirt? Looks like another young guy is getting a chance for early playing time.

Also Ark did lose to A&M I probably should have checked that lol still I think my argument is valid.

I don't know. Bylaw 14.2.4 says no more than 20% of games (2.4 games - 24 minutes into 3rd game) and he was playing in game three (not sure of the time frame on the injury) but bylaw 12.8.4 says 30% of games (3.6 games).

anyone here know which is accurate or that they actually go by?
12.8.4
14.2.4

I feel like he went out in the second half which would be past that limit. I may be wrong, that game felt long and time stood still for most of it.

why so few players signed. is it a budget thing or somebody dropped the ball..curious to know. with probably 200 high schools within a 2 hour drive of san marcos why not sign 15 or 20 more. not trying to stir up things just seems like with a nice campus, thousands of great looking coeds, and 20+ spots available why run short handed?

There is some rule where you can only sign a certain amount a year (25 maybe?). So we won't be able to get back to a full number right away. We have to ship at it a few years.

run,

Fran used the get the transfers and JUCOs to plug the holes theory until we got "all of his kind of guys". Yousaw how that went last year when, for the first time, the team was all his players.
Exit Fran and Withers had 3 weeks to get to recruits and salvage the 2016 class. He did for the most part (dead period was in there when he was hired). Some left and he added more but we got a full class.

When they started the new culture we had 27 seniors graduate. Over the process we lost another 23+- to graduates that decided to forgo their last year of eligibility, dismissals and guys that quit. (plus one untimely death). as the process weeded out the ones that weren't buying in.

Enter 47 walk-ons to fill out the roster - a few are actually starting or on the 2 deep
No redshirts - 10 true freshmen are starting or on the 2 deep
12 guys on the whole roster of returners had seen any PT
16 seniors and not all of them are even on the 2 deep
This left a great gap in both experience and talent. Withers stated we barely have the talent for a 2 deep roster as it is so one starter going down throws someone into that 2 deep that hasn't earned it. That's just how bare Fran left the cupboard.
We have 68 on scholarship out of those 99 guys and 4 (walk-ons) earned them in the fall.
So, we have 99 on the team but many are not ready to step in and do the required job. We have bodies to plug holes, if we need them but they're not really ready.
