Big 12: "Nobody agrees on the teams right now."
Some of us have speculated for months that this is the big reason behind the dog-and-pony show of 20 candidates:

Quote:"Nobody agrees on the teams right now," one Big 12 official noted.

http://www.espn.com/college-football/sto...sion-talks

The end of this article talks about whether the Big 12 will extend its grant of rights agreement, and whether Texas and Oklahoma will sign a GOR extension:

Quote:"If the two parents don't commit [to signing the extension]," said one industry source, "what does that tell you?"

Said another: The Big 12 "could be close to the end."

The end won't occur as long as UT has the LHN & GOR is in place - costs are too high for UT & OU to do anything prior to 2022-23 with effectivity in 2025-26 with expiration of GOR. And UT will still be tied to LHN until 2032 with costs too high to move prior, as long as B12 exists.

Doesn't sound much different that any other high level negotiation. We're still almost a month out from the October 17 meeting. Was anyone really expecting 'agreement' to be leaked through a writer.. much less a beat writer for ESPN?

You've got to think though that this whole thing is blackening the Texas-OU relationship.

If you are Oklahoma, I can't imagine not thinking "ok, ride this out a little bit and then get ready to turn that application in to the SEC"

I think Texas is glued to LHN...as in they will always prefer that as their top option. Will they renew the GOR? I bet not....

But it does suggest that the ongoing speculation that some schools - like Cincy or Houston - were surely in is incorrect.

RE: Big 12: "Nobody agrees on the teams right now."
I live in the Dallas area, and I live near a high ranking big 12 employee. They specifically told me that the old big 8 schools DO NOT want another Texas school. The only way they see Houston getting added is if there is a new GOR in place. However, Oklahoma does not really want Houston, so why would they sign this GOR?

This person said that they personally wanted Houston and Cincy, but does not see how Houston gets added. They did not mention BYU by name other than saying there definitely are scheduling issues. They did not mention the LGBT issue.

This person said that 4 teams is dead, and would put the chances at expanding by 2 vs. non expanding at 60-40. This conversation happened 3 weeks ago.

This person told me that the only members of the big 12 that have attended each of the meetings has been the commissioner and deputy commissioner.

Until I hear something else from this person, I am going to believe them.

Maybe the compromise should be Texas picks 1 school and Oklahoma picks 1 school to get to 12. I would assume Texas picks Houston not sure who ou would pick but probably from the pool of cincy, uconn and byu.

Why not just add 6 schools and give everyone something they want?

BYU, CSU, Houston, Cincinnati, USF, UConn

I do think a lot can be inferred from the outcome of all this, but I think you can over interpret things during this evaluation/negotiation period. There's going to be varying opinions/ perspectives on this that are going to get debated. The question is whether in the end the league comes to one mind, not that there are different minds during the process.

Looks like expansion, no matter how many, is linked to GOR extension. One not happening without the other. So it's more than just choosing teams. It's working out an extended GOR with the Tv partners.

Looks like a lot of balls in the air for Bowlsby. It may take a while.

I guess I just don't understand the board infatuation with the hottest commodity of late, I guess in this instance it's USF & CSU.

Former Big12 commissioner has said BYU's no Sunday play was NOT an issue.

I think that's what's basically happened....

I think Texas liked BYU and is forced to like UH...

I think the non-Texas schools don't want another Texas team. I think Oklahoma likes Cincinnati and UConn....grabbing Cincinnati is making up for letting Louisville go

Texas is probably ok with letting BYU go, but there is a lot of political pressure to add UH. I don't think UT gives a crap about UConn, or the Florida teams either...

so there you have it...irreconcilable differences

add in the fact that this conference will NEVER have a TV network, which the other P5 conferences have....

I think this conference is headed for hard times. I think it will still exist in the end, and keep an autobid, but I think massive change is coming for it

Well,

Texas and Kansas to Big 10.

Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to the SEC.

And then there were 6 desperate schools:

West Virginia
Iowa State
Kansas State
Baylor
TCU
Texas Tech

The person did not say that it was such an issue that they could not be added just that it was something that would have to be worked through. They did not make it sound like it would a reason that could keep them out. Sorry if that is how my post came across.

Because you'd be potentially taking away the one thing everyone wants - money.

As Brett McMurphy said, the only ones who really know what is going on are the presidents and they aren't talking.

Not surprising. Lots to consider.

All 11 have pros and cons. And they are trying to look at long term while still not ignoring the present. SMU gets dismissed for a lot of obvious reasons, but they actually have the 2nd biggest budget among the contenders. They have a lot of wealthy alumni willing to put up $$$s.
