I understand that, but our guys aren't even competing. I'm not expecting our defense to go out and win a bunch of 1 on 1 battles and shut down their offense, but I expected something better than what we've seen so far.

It's even more frustrating considering our offense was hanging in there and scoring right with UNC. Again, I didn't expect to win but I was hoping for something better than what our defense has shown so far.

I would respectfully disagree that the JMU D isn't competing. They're just getting beat. It happens, even when you're trying.

I guess yes, technically, they are competing. They are playing against UNC in an NCAA sanctioned competition. But you can't look at the results today and say, "Man, the JMU defense really went out and competed today. They held their own even though they were severely outgunned." You can rarely say this during a 60 minute football game (as opposed to 55 minute football games), but I can't think of a single positive thing that the JMU defense did today. There's still 11 minutes to play so maybe we'll see something here.

I'm sure Houston and the staff will get things sorted out after this game and we'll see a much improved defense when we get to CAA play. CAA teams just don't have the weapons that UNC does. We'll be alright in the long run, but today was bad. Really bad.

Dude...the level of effort is more than just a "technicality." Not saying the results aren't disappointing, but give credit where credit is due. UNC's an excellent offense, and JMU just doesn't have the depth. I wish there was more talent too on JMU's D, so it's not a fair judgment to say the defense hasn't played hard.

I guess I'm just shocked that it was as bad as it was. I didn't think we'd shut UNC out but I didn't think today would look like this. I guess that's what's most frustrating.

Coaching can't address talent deficiency.

We have no DL. We can't match up with 6'5" WR. You can survive one of those, but not both.

I don't think the athletes we have on defense are THAT bad...

Obviously they're outclassed by the guys that UNC has on offense but can you honestly say that you're not shocked at how poorly they played today? I think we all figured they had a tough task, but I definitely didn't think it would be this bad. I know that in the long run we'll be alright, but it still sucked watching the defense today.

It sucked. Houston has one recruiting class under his belt, and 3 total games.

Let's give it some time.

Honestly, the results are what I expected. I was hoping for a flawless offensive performance by JMU, knowing it would take scoring on virtually every possession to keep it close.

What we learned today is JMU's offense is for real. Our D is better, but we aren't going to win a championship unless we get a better pass rush.

I agree! I'm all aboard the Houston hype train. I think he's a great coach and I think we're going to have a fun season. The defense won't face another squad all year with an offense anywhere close to what UNC has. This is as bad as it'll get.

And as I type this, the defense recovers a fumble. It's good to see them not give up after a bad day. A touchdown here would be a great way to finish this thing out and move into CAA play.

Conor Mitch...tough to believe this was any kind of competition in the summer. He has looked rough in every game so far.

That's the biggest thing I noticed today. We got absolutely no pressure on Trubisky. He had all day to throw and to his credit he found the open guys. Our guys should have better days against CAA squads.

Also, didn't the UNC QB from the last time we played (Renner?) set a record for completion percentage in a game? Trubisky today set a UNC record for consecutive completions. When you can't get pressure, the QB is going to have a chance to set records like that.

Lol at the ref on the 2nd to last play. Easy PI call and our receiver came up looking for the flag and the ref looked at him like, "Bruh I'm trying to get home to watch the Georgia game."

Then on the last play there was a second left after the incompletion and then well after the play it just ticked down to 0:00.

People who bet on us must've been livid since we could've covered with a TD!

I was just thinking that too. The refs had the over I guess.

I was confused because it looked like that was actually a completion although I never saw a replay.

The ball went through the back of the end zone but it was so clearly a textbook PI call. The defender had his right arm wrapped around the waist of the receiver and spun him around while he reached across with his left hand.

I wouldn't have even brought it up but it was just so obvious that you'd think no matter the time in the game a call like that gets made.

I agree with most of what you said except the D is better. It very well may end up being better in the end but you can't possibly suggest today's performance indicates the D is better... They gave up a TD on EVERY possession

Some take aways.

Offense: we started stronger than I could've ever have imagined and overall Schor looked good today. I'll try to forget that one terrible play in the 3rd I think where he was desperately scrambling and took a sack instead of even throwing to the sideline. He needs to learn that sometimes you just need to give up on a play.
Our stable of RBs are amazing and will be the highlight of this season. Our success is going to be on their shoulders.
I liked the fact that we kept playing to the final seconds and were knocking on the door. Mickey would've taken a knee with 1.5 minutes left.

Defense: wow. I'm not sure if I should be concerned or is #26 unc just that good. They started 8 for 8 and we only forced a stop halfway through the fourth quarter when their back ups were in. Thankfully they let off the gas and didn't set yet another program worst defensive performance (UR last year scoring 59. This is still the fbs opponent record for most points allowed).
We forced a fumble in trash time. Looking for a positive.
I know unc has a very talented group of WRs and it certainly showed today. They always seem to be a WR factory.

Special teams: continue to look solid with no big gains allowed. I'm impressed.

It's disappointing to not beat the spread but hey, we didn't quit with five minutes remaining like little ******* and we also didn't let them hang 80 on us. It could always be worse.

Offense: great. Defense: ugh. Overall: I still have no clue. Maine is when the real season starts.

It looked like we did have a second remaining but I'm not surprised the refs didn't bother to look into it.

495 yards of offense tonight. We will be a force on our level. Feel fairly good after today. Wish we had done better on D but at least we were competitive for a good bit.

I wouldn't expect too many FCS receivers to outrun our secondary like they did today. I'm sure JMU learned some lessons about over-committing to the run and maintaining coverage discipline. We lost....big....but we showed enough to make me feel OK. I'd also like to see a bit more diversity on first down--gotta throw a pass in there just to keep the defense honest.
