South Alabama beats Mississippi State, 21-20, as State misses a FG with 9 seconds left. Joey Jones is a guy that I wonder if we could afford.

Certainly a fair criticism. And not one that Stoops hasn't heard before.

UH handled #3 OU, and it wasn't as close as the 23-33 score makes it look. Hard to believe that 6 years ago their program and ours were on pretty much the same level. I'll leave it to the crowd to wonder what the difference has been since then that's made them a program with a realistic shot at entering the top 10 and their second straight G5 NYE bid and made us a program that is satisfied to go 7-5 in SunBelt 2.0.

Not sure who is "satisfied", but to answer your question, I think the biggest thing is not realizing that we had a good thing in Mensa.

Coaching, coach selection, and university support.

Even when we were "even" UH had the better coach in Sumlin, we just happened to have a great OC and a coach who was able to not hamstring his talent. And that even season ignores the hiring of Briles prior to Sumlin. UH has done a very good job selecting their coaches and making hiring/firing decisions at the right times.

Mensa is a very different coach today from who he was at Rice. Ruowls and I and a number of others had the same criticisms of Mensa's offense as we have of Rice today, and every year in between. UH's offense doesn't have the same issues.

When you have the same problems, year in and year out, with different coordinators, the problem is not the coordinators.

I am not sure that the academic side of UH is pleased with how much support has been shifted to athletics. But that is Khator's decision. Let's see what their endowment does.

I don't mean to imply that we can or should emulate UH's path from 2010 onward. I mean to imply that aggressively seeking the best leadership for a program on the one hand and increased institutional support for a program on the other can both return huge dividends for the program and the university in a relatively short time. I also mean to praise the players and coaches there for their excellent on-field performance.

RE: Kickoff weekend - other games
I was at the UH OU game. UH played good defense throughout the game.
There were a few calls that the refs missed or erred on, but that happens in every game.

What really lost the game for OU was the decision to try the long field goal with the ball at UH's 36 instead of going for it on 4th.
