And I agree the RT, RG, and C may all be all-SBC teamers at year's end. The freshman LT played better than expected as well.
I'm no kicking coach and don't pretend to be but his entire motion seemed off last night. I haven't been able to watch practice to see if he has a tendency to push the ball to the right but it seemed that his motion can be attributed to that happening twice. The way he leans left and pushes his leg through instead of swinging his leg through is something that can be fixed but I'm not sure if it'll be this season.
The reports out of camp were that he could hit from distance but that h e was inconsistent. You overlook missing the FG given the environment. Harder to accept the missed PAT.
This is why I made the comment about him pushing the ball right. He did it twice and the ball took a similar trajectory which would imply a mechanical flaw. I believe he hit the ball well enough on the field goal but his mechanics weren't on. It didn't seem like an issue was nerves to me based on the same result for both misses.

Lamb makes the best decisions at QB that I have ever seen in college football. We will see how Miami is doing before the game but they should be very worried.

I feel bad for the kicker. That's about as tough a spot anyone can be in. First collegiate game competing for what would arguably be the biggest win in program history. That's a lot of pressure.
Hopefully he has a short memory and has a successful career.
I watched most of the app game yesterday since our game was an abortion from the start. The only ugly I saw was clock management at the end of the game. That was brutal. If that's the worst problem you have all season, you're in good shape.

Rubino tried to guide his kicks rather than just uncorking his leg. Plus he was raising his head early, which is a no-no. Correctable mistakes.
Miami is a completely different team than Tennessee. Bad run defense but Kaaya could be a first round pick. Tennessee didn't test App deep that much but found holes in the secondary at times. Secondary is the biggest question on the defense.

I couldn't help but think that I was watching GS vs. UGA from last year all over again... so many similarities including the final result.
Great effort by your team, you'll be fine, but that kicking game might come back and bite you in the azz again.
On another note, I wonder if the North Dakota State fanbase is watching what you and GS have accomplished in such a short time and thinking "why can't we do the same thing?"
"Barnett . . . will be drawing an above the table paycheck this time next year." What are you suggesting?
That he is better than Vernon Butler. That is exactly what he meant. I'm a Panthers fan and dude has been passed around like a ragdoll against practice squad players.
Oh, and that it is likely that most players at the Big SEC schools are receiving kickbacks.
I was asking whether he was suggesting that Barnett was receiving a below the table paycheck this year, which is a rather strong accusation to make. I don't know what Vernon Butler has to do with it one way or the other.

In our third year playing FBS Football we go toe to toe with a SEC heavyweight which in the 9th ranked team in ths country and pre season pick to win their division. We owned the line of scrimmage and out gained their vaunted rushing game. Their lone legit TD was a 47 yard prayer that was answered on a underthrown ball. We had a freshman kicker miss a PAT and FG in his first game in one of the most imposing venues in college football that was the difference in the game. They win the game on a fluke play. I can see no negatives or bad in this game.

GOOD:
- DEFENSE - front seven may be even better than last year even without Blair, I know it's deeper. I was surprised to see Stout #92 win the starting role, but after the game it's clear he has made huge strides. Our LBs as a whole are as good as any in the conference.
- OLINE - great run blocking
- COX - held on the ball, and displayed incredible vision, wouldn't trade him for anyone
- KICKOFFS - completely took a weapon away from UTk
- Punt returns - Capel should have fair caught that ball, but otherwise great decisions
BAD:
- predicable snap count, DE#9 for UTk timing his jump every third down and pressured Lamb
- WR separation - they were jammed at the line all night and Lamb didn't have enough time due to pass blocking (I think because of snap count)
UGLY*:
- *Small body of work and not fair to throw a freshman under the bus as it was his first college game in that atmosphere. He'll be fine longterm, I hope he gets to kick 5-6 PATs and a couple FGs next week.
That was a great, tough and physical game. App State is a very good team. What does the k mean?

I believe you are underestimating the effect Duck had at the beginning of the game on play calls as the game went along. They tested him time and time again. Many of the times Dobbs dropped back App had him confused when they dropped 8 into coverage. It wasn't that Tennessee didn't test App, Woody had a great game plan.

3 fumbles not recovered. That's something that can be chalked up to luck but it needs to be corrected. If anything, Tennessee got more breaks to stay in the game than App did which is something I haven't seen in a ranked P5 v. G5 match-up. One thing I was impressed by is the SEC refs. They was no bi's present and they appeared to make the correct call everytime.

I agree about the officials. They made some unpopular calls that went against the home team. On the fumbles, my Dad was fond of saying "it's a funny shaped ball and it takes funny bounces". That was certainly true Thursday night.

What is unlucky about the fumbles is Devin Stringer dove over the dropped snap and the end zone fumble.

The ball doesn't bounce as high on grass as it does on turf. Especially our turf, which has more rubber than many artificial fields. I'd say we may need to invest in a grass practice field, but we might be playing on turf for the rest of the year.

With the fumble in the end zone, the ball bounced off a Tennessee defender's legs simultaneously with Stringer's dive towards the ball which then bounced off of his feet. It was a wild play that just went the other way.

I'm not really saying it was anything more than unlucky but teams do practice fumble recoveries. A lot like basketball coaches rolling out a loose basketball and telling you to go get it. I assume the ball didn't bounce as far as Stringer anticipated due to the grass.
