The attendance/economics are such that we should be able to pay many of these schools more than they could hope to make off a home game. We should not be traveling OOC to schools that sell less than 5,000 seats.

Patriot and So Con are natural rival conferences. They reresent good regional games against good opponents. Are they NDSU? No, but no one in FCS is.

RE: Future Football Schedule
The Patriot is a natural rival conference?

Wonderful, Why don't we just go ahead and merge the CAA and Patriot into one mega league? No more schedulng work! We can call it the Crapriot league.

The more I think about it, the worse this idea sounds. Patriot averages 5,500 fans per game overall, and is ranked at best #7 in FCS strength. Please explain what benefits this provides CAA teams? My guess is it makes it easier for ADs to complete their schedule (less work and more golf time), but sacrifices potential revenue and home games for schools like JMU. Its a very bad idea for us to do 1-1 deals with the Patriot. This is a lazy answer to scheduling.

It makes me wonder if this actually has to do with the new CAA TV deal, and if this is working some angle, but I just don't see it.

The Ivy League and Patriot League are without question the "best known" schools in all of FCS. Anyone with a heartbeat has heard of them.

RE: Future Football Schedule
I can just imagine all the TV networks lining up to show games at Colgate and Holy Cross with 5k or less fans. And such well known schools too. It will be a much better showcase of CAA talent than JMU at NDSU. Wow, we are really reaching for the stars! We will get to see JMU "nationally branded" playing the #1 toothpaste brand in the country.

RE: Future Football Schedule
While I don't think playing all the teams in the SoCon or the Patriot would be the best for JMU, I do think that playing some of the teams in those conferences would be better than playing our current OOC schedule. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think as long as we are in FCS we should be playing Furman, the Citadel, Western Carolina, Chattanooga, Lehigh, Lafayette, Fordham and even VMI (from time to time), not Cen. Con. St., Morehead, St. Francis, or Norfolk State.

I agree with this, but don't think a "scheduling alliance" that treats all CAA and Patriot schools equally benefits us. We should be picking schools from this group that are interesting, somewhat competitive (not blowouts), and negotiate favorable terms along the lines of 2-1 or guarantee games. More home games is not only better for our fans, it's more revenue for JMU. JMU is a top 5 attendance FCS program and has been for a while. We need to start acting like a big dog, and schedule the way Montana and NDSU do.

Yea, those with a heartbeat have heard of the Patriot schools but they are unaware that the Patriot schools sponsor athletics. A CAA school playing a Patriot school does not turn said CAA school into an academic powerhouse with a 10 billion endowment. It's just a CAA school playing a Patriot school in front of 1100 cheese eaters.

Colgate has advanced in the playoffs many times including last year plus has played in a national championship game. Lehigh plays in a very nice stadium and gave JMU all they could handle in the two games we have played there. Lafayette has always been tough.

The So Con was the best FCS league for many years. Chatty is a top 10 program. Furman and Woffold have advanced in the playoffs many times.

Rocks, are you new to FCS football? You don't seem to know any history of this division. 71 does.

Truthfully. You used to be all about JMU to FBS. Now you are the biggest FCS defender.

Curiously, what happened? Just trying to understand the change over the last few years in your tone.

You can be both 2004. I am all for a move up but I also believe that the scheduling of Patriot and So Con teams is a good thing if we remain in FCS.

If we were an FBS program and entering into a scheduling agreement with Patriot and So Con teams, I would be irate. JMU is FCS. Why can't folks be objective enough to judge the scheduling based on the fact that JMU is an FCS school?

When we are in the SB we can open in prime time against an SEC school. In the future. Future football schedule. Yeah, that's this thread.

The same reason I am trying to not bash everything in sight and appreciate what we have. I realize we're FCS probably forever, so I'm trying to enjoy what I have. We could not even have a football team.

Remember to appreciate what we have and not worry endlessly about what we don't.

The point of this thread is to talk about and list the actual future games, not gripe about the games we're not going to probably ever play.

Exactly. I am trying to enjoy our football team and judge from an objective point of view. As long as we are FCS, then I will have the expectations of an FCS fan.

Ok. I see that.

I guess I just fear the day when the dream of playing our peers dies. I see no peers in either conference, and am not enamored with the idea of filling up future schedules with Patsy and SoCon teams

I get the "be happy with what you have" mantra, but I am also a firm believer that complacency breeds comfort. Comfort isn't good when you are capable of more.
