Bubas Cup
It is still a few weeks before SB head-to-head play begins and a few sports have already started non-conference play, but I wanted to toss this out before football starts in a few days.

Here is the Bubas Cup spreadsheet for this year. Feel free to bookmark this and/or share on individual school message boards. Also feel free to check for mistakes. There may be some changes in sponsored SB sports offered by schools that I have not updated yet.

For those new to the board since last spring or anyone else that has decided to start following the Bubas Cup I plan to explain a few things in a week or two, or ask me.

Here is the spreadsheet for 2016-2017
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...sp=sharing

For anyone wanting to look back here is the link to 2015-2016
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...sp=sharing

And finally 2014-2015
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...sp=sharing

I am hoping to make a database that goes back to the beginning of the Sun Belt, but finding records is not easy. MTSU used to publish the results in their own end of year review of their program. I found a few of these on line. If anyone has older records do let me know. USA folks?

The only struggle I see for the Chants early in the year might be in men's XC. If you recall, Coastal was going to eliminate the men's track and XC programs just 2 or 3 years ago because of title IX concerns. Fortunately that didn't happen. The track team has remained stout. The XC team has struggled for several years now. I hate to say that as a former Chant XC runner myself.

Welcome to the club. While TXST T&F is in there fighting for both indoor and outdoor titles every year, ours XC is horrible.

I have to ask why? How are the Indoor and Outdoor Track events for TxSt at the lengths of XC? I assume not that great and you are picking up points for shorter distances and the field side of things. But want to ask.

From what I've seen, once you get to the 800 I never count on TXST placing well so that would be a holdover from XC. I know a lot of schools have separate rosters, we have some cross over (3 men, 4 women) but we just don't seem to get the good ones. Maybe it is/was the coaching staff. I don't know, it's never been a strength from the records I've been able to check.
We do have one promising young man I watched this past season, but that was on the track, and we have one young lady coming in that was all everything in XC for her area. Hopefully it gets better.
I will say that our field events fell off this past season also so we're getting a great deal of our points from shorter events, hurdles, relays. Just check the scoring of this last years meets and you'll see that's when we got the vast majority of our points but it also allowed for no margin of error; which our women's teams had and it cost them.

Coastal's thing appears to be that they aren't recruiting distance kids only for XC most likely because of scholarship numbers. They're filling out the XC team (that used to have upwards of 12 members and is only now 6 or 7 guys) with middle distance guys and walk-ons. They may be good 800 or 1500 guys, but the 8K or 10k is a much different animal.

Strange. I've never known a T&F and XC program having completely different rosters. For practicality, it just does not make sense as it allows you to do things with scholarship and participation counts that benefit an athletic department.

I just looked at '15 XC roster in San Marcos and compared to '16 T&F roster. There's just one male missing from XC to T&F. Didn't bother with the females. Redshirts and athletic eligibility remaining could be different across XC, Indoor & Outdoor components.

RE: Bubas Cup
Bubas Cup Rules: The following is copied and pasted straight from the Sun Belt website.

SCORING: Points for the Bubas Cup are awarded based strictly on regular season finish for sports that have a regular season conference schedule. Points are awarded based on Sun Belt Championship finish if that sport does not have a regular season conference schedule
Points are awarded based on the number of schools sponsoring the sport. Institutions not sponsoring a sport do not receive points in that sport. Institutions tying for positions split the combined points of their positions.
-----
Added notes by McLeansvilleAppFan
Football and Volleyball, both, with 11 schools participating in each sport,, awards 11 points for 1st place, 10 points for second place, and so forth down to 1 point for 11th place. Nine of the 18 Sun Belt sponsored sports have 11 schools competing. Men’s Soccer is on the other extreme. Six schools compete in men’s soccer so first place earns 6 points, second place earns 5 points, and so forth.

Schools that tie split the points by adding up the points earned for the tied positions and dividing by the number of schools that tied. And it is not uncommon to have 3- or sometimes 4-way ties.

Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Volleyball, Women’s Basketball, Men’s Basketball, Softball and Baseball have both a regular season and a championship tournament. The tournament winner decides which school represents the Sun Belt in any NCAA tournament, but only regular season results earn Bubas Cup points.

Football has a regular season but no championship game (yet) so regular season determines the Bubas Cup points for football.

Men’s Cross Country, Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Indoor Track and Field, Women’s Indoor Track and Field, Women’s Golf, Men’s Golf, Men’s Tennis, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Outdoor Track and Field, and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field do not have a regular season that involves any sort of sanctioned round robin competition that would constitute a regular season. The conference championship results alone determine Bubas Cup points.

In the case of tennis the actual Bubas Cup points for teams are also determined by NCAA rankings for any part of the bracket that is not completed for all the seeds. 1st and 2nd place and the corresponding Bubas Cup points would be determined by the conference tournament. Any school placing 3rd place or lower earns Bubas Cup points by NCAA rankings. The end result is that tennis Bubas Cup points are earned by performance and schedule against non Sun Belt Schools, as W-L and SOS in the end determines the NCAA rankings. One can tell the order of the rankings based on the seeds in the tournament.

No Bubas Cup points are awarded to any school that sponsors any sport that is not sponsored by the Sun Belt. Field Hockey and Wrestling for Appalachian is one example. Georgia Southern has rifle and swimming and diving. Many schools have non Sun Belt sports as part of their athletic program.

My spreadsheet does contain a tab that separates Women’s points from Men’s points. That is 100% unofficial but can be interesting to examine. There is also a tab for sports by season. This is also unofficial but again interesting to see how different schools sometimes excel during a certain time of the year.

Finally Unity Points is also unofficial. It is my personal attempt to make every sport count the same. I take the points earned and divide by the points possible for that sport. The conference regular season championship would earn 1.0 unity points or slightly less is there was a tie. A school in the exact middle of the standings would earn 0.5 unity points, and so forth.

I am not aware of any conference that does not sponsor some sort of all-sport competition. It seems every conference does something a bit different. Some conferences make every sport equal weight but the jump in points varies based on the number of schools competing in that sport. (This is very close to my unity points.) Some conferences do the same except the next place only loses one cup point. In that system schools that offer lots of sports can be helped because even last place could be worth 6 or 7 points. Some conferences split the men’s and women’s competitions. (This seems rare but the Southern Conference does this due to The Citadel and VMI not sponsoring many women’s sports.)

There is also a NCAA wide Cup that gives points for NCAA tournament results. (http://www.nacda.com/directorscup/nacda-...oring.html)

It certainly helps to offer more sports. You can track the points per sport or even better the unity points per sport. GaSo does a better job at that. Historically your women's sports have not carried their weight overall either.

Did you just call our girls fat? They might not be good at sports but I think they carry their weight just fine.

I'm now curious which of the sun belt 18 sports does CCU not sponsor

I'm guessing Men's Indoor Track which was I believe the only big south sport we didn't participate in

Never mind

We field 19 sports--
2 beach volleyball and women's lacrosse play in Atlantic Sun conference

Which leaves 17

So as I suspected Men's Indoor Track is what we don't play
