You have some facts wrong here^ I take it that you haven't watched games at several of these places.

Pretty lazy comment. And a useless one without specifics.

Ok. So I'm not being "lazy": Tulsa does not seat 40k. Not even close. Some of the NFL stadiums you listed as being close to campus are not close to campus. USF does not play "close to campus". Neither does Temple. That's why I wondered if you've been to the actual stadiums and schools you wrote about. That's lazy. Not me pointing out the errors you made.

Cheers!

UMass plays in a pro stadium on the opposite side of an entire state. So relative to our discussion of UMass, yes, USF and Temple play in pro stadiums "close" to campus. So the error was in your interpretation. I didn't know Tulsa's stadium had been reduced, but they used to seat over 40k. That means they have been renovated, so they fit into the category with UC and ECU. Again, UMass falls short. And so yes, your comment was lazy. If you had explained why you thought I was in error, I could have pointed out your error at the time.

They have been taking the cheap way out like Idaho. They either need to go all in or go back to FCS. They will kill their program if they continue like this for an extended period. When they moved to FBS, Idaho had a better program than Boise. Now they are one of the worst in the division.

I don't won't to argue with you anymore Bullet. Perhaps I could have been more polite to you when I was pointing out what I saw as errors in some of the things you listed. I agree with you about UMass It will kill their program if they continue on like this. Invest and win now, and maybe the AAC or ACC (further down the road) will be possibilities down the road. If the belief is that they can get a good conference invite and THEN they'll invest and be able to win, well, they'll be waiting for a long time and be in the position Idaho is in. IMHO.
Cheers!

JMU's administration denies receiving an "invite" but it's pretty clear they were approached and rebuffed the Sun Belt's advances.

Oh the lovely perception that we are not investing. Just about every sport has seen investments, close to 80 million for Football and Basketball in the last 4 years. Before FBS the athletic budget was 27 Million, think in 2014 the budget was 33 Million and that is continuing to grow. We are growing at a measured pace, perhaps not good enough regarding the stadium improvements, but that was actually pretty hard when we were contracted to play x number of game at Gillette. Things change in 2017 with ALL games back on campus and probably a 3k increase in seating and allow standing room tickets. Realistically do not expect expansion plans released till 2018. We don't like it but we solder on.

RE: UMass Football
UMass announces Four Home Games Set For National Distribution.

Quote:AMHERST, Mass. – Announced by University of Massachusetts Athletics on Thursday, in conjunction with its multimedia rights holder, Learfield's UMass Sports Properties, a national television and digital distribution plan is in place for four football home games in 2016 via a partnership with American Sports Network (ASN).

For the Mississippi State, Tulane and Louisiana Tech games, all set for 3:30 p.m. kick times, ASN will partner with NESN to distribute in the New England market. A similar clearance will be in place for the Boston College game with TV info announced in the coming weeks. All four games will be available on the ESPN3 platform and the WatchESPN App.

"Our partnership with ASN will provide our football program with unprecedented television coverage," Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford said. "In addition to airing regionally and nationally on television, our fans will have access to our games on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN App. As we continue to build momentum for our football program, having multiple viewing options to showcase the Minutemen is a priority."

As previously announced, Massachusetts football opens the 2016 season at Florida on Sat., Sept. 3. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. on the SEC Network, UMass' first of at least five nationally televised contests. Television details for the Minutemen's remaining two home games and five away games will be announced at later dates.

"We anticipate the total television and digital coverage for our entire 2016 season will reach the greatest distribution since our move to FBS in 2012," Bamford added.

ASN partners include major regional sports networks such as Comcast SportsNet Chicago, Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic, Altitude, Cox Sports, as well as broadcast stations in major markets across the U.S. ASN carries a strong distribution footprint with approx. 38 million households for the 12 p.m. ET window and approx. 70 million households for the 3:30 p.m. ET window.

Other info sprinkled in other threads:

For 2015, UMass Athletic budget is close to 37 Million.

Heard from an unofficial source that McGuirk expansion is looking to add 12k additional seats bring the capacity to 29k with various cost, with an upper limit of 40 Million.

Note that this is just playing semantic games ... schools normally only get the formal invite once it's clear that the school will be accepting the invite.

How would they feel about a MAC invite if that conference loses a team to the AAC?

UMass Home games on NESN

UMASS home games vs Missy St and BC won't be on National TV? ASN regional and ESPN3 internet for the big name home games? What am I missing here? Didn't UMASS sign a deal with ESPN or CBS-SN? BYU wouldn't have scheduled UMASS for several years if the games were not on national tv.
Cheers!

If you lived in New England, you know being on NESN, home of the Boston Red Sox is a big deal. ESPN3 and WatchESPN are available nationally. NESN is available without a sports package on my cable system as everyone up here wants NESN.

This will take 5 seconds, just google NESN

Yeah NESN is pretty big **** around here. Every Red Sox and Bruins game (minus the national ones on ESPN/NBCSN/etc) gets played only on NESN for the most part.

Having them be the regional distributor is great for trying to get some more local people watching the team and potentially going to a few games here and there.

I get that it's good for you guys. I just figured your home games vs Miss ST, BC and in the future BYU, would be shown on ESPN, ESPN2 or at least CBS-SN so everyone gets to watch them. I wouldn't think BYU would go to UMASS for a football game not shown on ESPN2/CBS-SN at least. Since BYU went Indy I think everyone of their games has been on national tv. (Except their 1 home game a year on BYU network vs FCS team.)
Cheers!

Oh I'm definitely hoping there's more to come here. It's just good to see that in our first season as an Indy with no conference ties to a network that we're able to get completely legitimate local distribution with at the very least somewhat acceptable national distribution.

Of course I don't have cable anymore and don't get NESN or ESPN3, so I guess I'll need to go to all the games in person.

Is NESN part of the Fox Sports Regional Networks group? That may allow the game to be shown in other areas.

Looks like NESN is somewhat similar to YESN: one-off cable sports channels primarily anchored by a popular MLB franchise (Red Sox and Yankees, respectively).

Although the YESN is part of the Fox Sports Network and also has the Brooklyn Nets. So I guess it's somewhat similar to, for example, the Fox Sports North channel that has the Twins and T-Wolves in Mpls.

On the other hand, NESN appears to be independent (not affiliated with Fox Sports Net).

Good for UMass! Keep building up! Slowly but surely, good things will happen.

EDIT: ok, on final inspection it appears that NESN is in fact "affiliated" with Fox Sports Net, while YESN is considered a full partner network of Fox Sports Net. And NESN does have NHL games as well (which Fox Sports North also does have, but YESN does not).

ASN will produce the games for UMass and then local networks all over the country can pick up the game and broadcast it on their network. I read that the Mississippi State game will be on the local CBS channel down in Mississippi.

I was checking out the schedule and future schedules on http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa-16/2016-...hedule.php and noticed there are several away games without TV listed. I figure the BYU game will be on BYU TV but i was surprised the others didn't have tv listed yet.

I don't know a lot about TV deals but I expected the UMASS home games to be streamed, the fact that I can watch them in Florida on a basic sports package seems pretty good to me. I guess I'm disappointed that UMass isn't getting paid anything but the exposure seems pretty good.

UMass is going to miss the 1M payout from the MAC but I'm glad i don't have to worry about streaming the games anymore.

Less than 24 hours till the season kicks off!

Wow. I read the link you posted. UMASS only has 1 game on tv and that is on the SECN. That's astonishing. No TV money OR exposure? I'm not sure how that's sustainable? I've never heard of anything like this.
Cheers!
