RE: Memphis "Candidate Pool" according to Wolken.
He fits in these respects - he's coached in major cities all his career - Indianapolis and Atlanta - and has cut his teeth for close to two decades as a head coach.
Plus, he's cut his teeth at two tough, tough places to win at and done alright - IUPUI and Georgia State.
Other than that, I don't know much about his style or recruiting or things of that nature.

He is crazy if he thinks the pay alone wouldn't get better than that.

He'd be good. Major step up, IMO. Sure, there are bigger names and there are lesser. Most people who actually know what they are talking about are very complimentary of him.
The guy has one NCAA win in his long career? This is the guy yall want? No thanks. His kid is carrying the team.

He has coached at IUPUI and Ga State haha...give him a real program and see what he could do.
But your point is valid, that hire would'nt be seen as "better" than Josh Pastner. Like it or not.

I got to see Ron up close and personal for many years, when he was the head coach of IUPUI and they were in the same conference as ORU.
Trust me...you folks do NOT want Ron Hunter anywhere near the Memphis program.

Hunter is a great story but he isn't even coaching at the mid-major level.

That's what the national media thinks the Memphis job would attract. John martin seems to think guys like Gregg Marshall & Buzz Williams wouldn't come here.
Right or wrong - there ya go...
I guess the hobbit hadn't a clue.

That tweet was from 2015.
Hell, Florida hired Mike White.
Not a bad choice if that was the "pool" in 2015.

Was he?
I didn't realize we hired a coach in 2015.
I thought it was this past April (2016).

RE: Memphis "Candidate Pool" according to Wolken.
Wolken's tweet implied Memphis would have to hire a non-P5 coach (maybe even another assistant) with a less than standout resume.
The 'candidates' and hiring date are not the key aspects of the tweet. The context of the tweet was what was important to remember.
He wasn't implying it for 2015, but just in general.
He was off.

A year later things change.
More importantly, Mike White would have been a helluva grab.
Still didn't get Marshall or Buzz, as the initial point.
Plus, based on the reaction of the fanbase, getting a 93 year old dude who has won 1 NCAAt game in the last 9 years, wasn't exactly a tape measure blast. Memphis essestially outbidded Texas Tech for their coach and made him one of the 10 highest paid guys in the country.
So, sure, Memphis proved it was bigtime by severely overpaying a guy who has been "meh" at best in his last two stops (been fired in two of past three) and that is better than a Mike White (or Chris Beard/Brad Underwood/Steve Forbes)?

RE: Memphis "Candidate Pool" according to Wolken.
January 2015 =/= April of 2016.
If we were conducting a coaching search in the middle of what became the first disaster season after however many straight years in the tournament our options probably would have been completely different.
As it is, it's still not that clear that Marshall or Buzz were "real" possibilties, and we ended up hiring a coach, whose resume has been somewhat less than standout (even getting fired from Minnesota) since being run off from one of the best jobs in college basketball, away from a P5 backwater that's had two NCAA appearances in the past 10 years, never advanced past the sweet sixteen, and only got that far 3 times in the past ~40 years.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
