RE: 2017 Baseball Recruiting
Ok Alvin set me straight on the scholly situation:
Rice does give both need-based and merit-based schollys.
the problem with the merit-based is that you have to treat everyone the same, and as such the bar at Rice is set very high (or else everyone in school would qualify). So baseball players aren't likely to fall into this category academically, in competition with our regular superb student body.
need-based schollys work, but the NCAA has a rule that any such aid has to OFFSET against any athletic scholarship aid offered. So this doesn't do us any good.
Wayne is pushing the rules people to allow schools to 'stack' need-based aid on top of athletic scholly aid; said that would help tremendously in our recruiting, given our tuition level.
Thank you (again) Alvin.

RE: 2017 Baseball Recruiting
I really wish NCAA would just move all sports to full scholarship (like men's football, basketball, and others). Partial scholarships make it tougher for schools with higher tuition. And they are just a stupid idea anyway. Give baseball 18-20 full scholarships. Cut back a few football scholarships if needed.

And recruit a couple 2 sport players like we always used to have.

BA posted their Top 500 draft prospects.
Signee Sean Reynolds in number 333. Also of note, Duplantier is number 51.

Children destined for athletic greatness specialize while very young. Two-sport athletes are increasingly rare.

True, although there was a time when some of our baseball recruits had more impressive high school football resumes than our football recruits.

High school and college coaches are increasingly saying publicly that specializing is the absolute worst thing a kid can do when it comes to success at the college level. I know here in the Lake Travis District, they force all kids to play multiple sports beginning in middle school if they want to participate in athletics at the high school level.

Even so the vast majority will be focused on one sport by the time they're playing varsity.

This is a big deal.
Let me say it differently... SOME schools give say a 25% merit based schollys for scoring 1400 (old scale) on the SAT... but that is 90+% of the Rice population and perhaps only 50% of the UT population or 25% of the UH population....
Need to find a way around that.
Like perhaps that the NCAA would set some sort of standard whereby a school could give 'athletic' scholarships of up to 25% or 50% of the cost of tuition that didn't count against the 11.7 'athletic' max for attaining certain academic standards.

Agreed, Hambone, we need to be able to have access to a better/larger pool of talent. So how do Vanderbilt/TCU (mainly Vanderbilt, since they're an academic peer) work around it? Vanderbilt has been able to bring in strong baseball recruiting classes, so why can't we? This is the question Karlgaard needs to solve.

The OG alluded to the fact the NCAA was working on some sort of plan to allow "stacked aid" which would make Rice competitive with signees once again. Hope JK is working to support the initiative.

RE: 2017 Baseball Recruiting
an addendum to my earlier comment is that we could give a 100% need-based scholly, given the right criteria, and it doesn't count against the 11.7 athletic scholly limit (don't know if that is just tuition or inclusive of room and board). The family has to make total income of less than some figure (I believe it's $80,000). Again, this scholly is available to all applicants to Rice who income qualify.
I think we have one player on the squad in this situation.

It's probably not just a scholarship though. Probably a financial aid package with grants and loans.

Kid named Luis Aviles just committed from a team in Atlanta. Looks like an undersized catcher. I don't have a perfect game membership so I'm sure somebody can give us the rankings and stuff. Top perfect game rating of 9 (out of 10), best pop time of 1.87 which is really really good, decent measurables across the board.

Best I can tell, you're referring to a C/1B/OF from Westminster Christian in Palmetto Bay, FL, who was/is playing summer ball for the Atlanta Bluejays. PG has him as 5'11" but MaxPreps lists him as 6'0" so not sure why you refer to him as an "undersized" catcher. His MP page includes stats for one 20 game stint, 55 AB, 24 H, 11 2B, 1 HR, .436 BA, .574 OBP, so I can see why PG's analysis gave him a 1.87 POP, which they indicate is a 96 percentile rating. They also mention he has a 4.2 GPA so looks like a good fit.

Westminster Christian is traditionally a really good high school baseball program. A-Rod, among others, is an alum.

Richmond Foster 2018. I wonder if he'll continue playing QB, also.

Looks like we're starting to turn around some of the real damage our previous "recruiting coordinator" did to the program.
