RE: Really PJ?
This entire thread is kinda silly.
Back in 2010 Dan Enos had the old MSU assistant coach Buck Nystrom address the team during spring practice. The dude wore an MSU coat and proceeded to tell the players how Enos was going to toughen them up like MSU. When one of the players reminded him that CMU beat the Spartans the previous fall, Nystrom said it was a fluke and could never happen again.
Now THAT kinda speaker would really pizz me off.
PJ has his faults, but I trust him on this.

Ray Lewis interfered with an active murder investigation and thus beat a murder rap. Poor analogy.
Sorry, I meant Ray Rice but for some stupid reason I was thinking about Ray Lewis and the legal issues he had.

RE: Really PJ?
Here's an article that appeared on espn.com today:
Quote:Ray Rice delivers 'important message' to Ravens rookies
5:22 PM CT
Jamison Hensley
ESPN Staff Writer
OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens had a surprise speaker Wednesday: Ray Rice.
Two years after being abruptly released by the team, Rice spoke to Ravens rookies about life lessons after practice.
"[Rice] delivered an important message that included his story, both the good and the bad," the Ravens said in a statement. "He clearly had the attention of our rookies."
It is believed to be the first time Rice has been at the Ravens facility since an acrimonious split between him and the team.
Rice was cut in September 2014 after a video of him hitting his then-fiancée, Janay, drew widespread attention. The incident occurred inside an elevator at an Atlantic City, New Jersey, casino hotel earlier that year.
In March 2015, Rice received $1.588 million from the Ravens as part of a settlement in his wrongful-termination grievance.
Rice, who has not played for the past two seasons, has repeatedly apologized for his actions. Janay, who is 26 weeks pregnant with their second child, visited the Ravens' facility with Rice on Wednesday.
A three-time Pro Bowler, Rice helped the Ravens win Super Bowl XLVII and remains the franchise's all-time leader in yards from scrimmage (9,214).
After releasing Rice, Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti talked about bringing back the running back in a player development role to share his story of redemption.
"I believe in my heart that Ray would be a great addition to us when it comes to trying to steer these guys from young men to grown men," Bisciotti said in September 2014.

A public service assignment thing, I'm sure.
He's probably got to tell his story to some number of programs, redeeming himself by passing on the results of his poor decision and clarifying proper thinking on those actions.

Well, her grandson was regularly in trouble. I had him stay after school for a detention and to catch up on his work. I walked him home and he invited me in to tell his grandma he had turned it around.
I walk in and there's a dozen people smoking weed, Granny the drug counselor included. She did talk a good game........
If you or I screw up we have to weather it with time to recoup our reputation. Ray wants to do the Granny the drug counselor routine, so he can quickly show he's learned and can get back to making the high dollar.
I don't have a problem with people preaching how to avoid "their pitfalls." But I think they need to hit rock bottom and have CLEARLY demonstrated that they have reformed, before telling others how to conduct themselves.
I'm calling BS on this story. Seems as though Dip has the perfect fable for every occasion.

RE: Really PJ?
Dear Whitebread Chimp,
When you teach 25 years in the inner city you see everything.
I once had an in home conference (cause the parents wouldn't come to school) and a guy came to the door to buy drugs from the kid's dad.
I had a student flee the building after he got in trouble. He crawled into his mentors car, and wouldn't get out. His mom came down to help get him out of the car. The cops also came. The mom saw the cops and fled, as there was a warrant out for her arrest.
I had a paraprofessional that was forced on us through a "paid volunteer program" courtesy of the federal government. The idea was to get parents of under privileged kids involved in the schools. She was a high school drop out, was 26, and had 7 kids, the oldest was 13 ( you do the math). 80% of my students were smarter than her, hence she was of no help in the classroom. She rarely showed up, and when she did she fell asleep. She always showed up to get her time card signed, and most of the hours were fudged by her. In a nut shell she did nothing other than disrupt instruction, waste our time, and collect a check.
I have a 100 similar examples I have witnessed of adults gaming the system. I'm sure you're oblivios and isolated from this kind of stuff, so I'm not the least surprised you wouldn't believe it.

You're not alone CD. Of my 35 years in the high school classroom, the last 15 were spent in a self-contained E.I. classroom. The interesting part here is that we probably could have doubled our E.I. headcount if we'd tested all those that were eligible in the school. Had one of my students shot dead in a drug deal gone bad by a 12 year Detroit boy. Unfortunately, there's a ton of the public that haven't got a clue.

RE: Really PJ?
Don't worry, the do-gooders have a lot of other great ideas to shove down our throats, at the working classes expense. And it will never end because Americans are now raised and educated to believe that this is how it should be. We have scrapped the old American dream of wealth and prosperity driven by motivation to succeed, hard work, discipline, responsibility, ingenuity, investment (with the understanding that you may fail/lose, and if you do, that's the way it goes), in favor of a belief that government will take care of everyone. Where is the carrot to work and achieve?
...but I digress.

Exactly. Another reason why I do trust PJ to instill the values and Core beliefs in our players. The discipline needed to play at this level carries over to many other areas of life. The players realize earlier there's no entitlement, it's about what you put out and achieve along with your dedication and efforts.

Trying to stretch this discussion into whether or not a football coach instills values and core beliefs is.....hmmmmm......a bit of a stretch.

Perhaps not for this thread….But absolutely a benefit at this level If the coach loves and cares about his players and wishes to make outstanding men of them well after football. The team concept and putting yourself second has unlimited Benefits if the message gets through. It carries well over into life work family and friends

RE: Really PJ?
Eh - NFL has been doing "Rookie Symposiums" for years with former players-coaches talking to them about dealing with issues including Domestic Violence.
And they still get the Greg Hardys, Ray Rices, etc.
Nevertheless - if Rice talking to our team saves one Female on campus from experiencing DV or sexual assault, was worth it.
Speaking as a father of two daughters, one of whom made poor choice in ex-husband.

No doubt
Important life concepts that might apply if a guy were a husband or a father.

I don't question the message or the concept. I question the motive of the guest speaker. Not sure he's being self serving or ginuinely wants to help these young men make better choices. But I get, that coming from Rice it "might" have more cred with that audience,
