While I also find it hard to believe, I was recently (within the last 30 days) told by an athletic director at another Texas school that he has heard from a Big 12 AD that (i) the Big 12 is definitely expanding and (ii) the two frontrunners are Memphis and...wait for it...Rice. I told him that I was doubtful of the accuracy of that information.

Wow. That would be shocking. I wouldn't complain (of course), but I would be shocked.

If that were to happen, I'd have to really credit JK pulling off such a coup.

It wouldn't surprise me at all. UT will do anything, ANYTHING, it can to marginalize and mitigate UH. That goes for athletics and academics.

I don't think there's much doubt about where the opposition to UH is centered.

We had better jump right on a P5 invite if we get one. We have to improve our football and basketball, but we would start getting P5 quality recruits.

I'm not trying to make us all feel old here, but the time frame that you are referencing was in the 1990's/very early 2000's, right? More than "just a few years ago".

No, we won in '08 and '10 and they won in '09 and '11. We should've run up the score in '08 like they tend to do. They won in '12 and '13 too but we had a chance in 2013 to score late and win after that beautiful onsides kick by Boz.

UH beat Florida State and opens the season with a chance to go at OU.

This 2-2 talk is irrelevant. The programs are so far apart, this is like Rice fans trying to bring up how we beat Alabama in the 50's.

Speaking of irrelevant.... We also have "a chance to go at Baylor". That means nothing. And 4 years ago isn't the 50's. 07-coffee3

The difference is that UH has a reasonable shot, and we do not. We play Baylor, we don't have a shot at winning

Define "a shot"... There is some probability that we could win. So you're wrong. Really missed your comments. They're so new and refreshing.

Some possibility .. semantics. There is a near 0 possibility and zero probability. This article is just the circle jerk of semantics to try to show that Bailiff and Rice are somehow better than they actually are.

Yeah, I'm sure you enjoyed my absence. One less person who called your BS out then.

Actually, we've been pretty salty most of our existence except one horrid stretch from 1991-2002.

But if you want to talk recently . . .

88 wins over the last 10 years is 19th best nationally. Source

47 wins over the last 5 years is T15th best nationally. Source.

I assume Rice would prefer to play with SMU, Tulsa, Tulane and Navy than with Conference USA. So you are rooting for Houston to move up in class, right?

Ah but you've missed it, on this board those wins don't count because they are in cream puff conferences. You need some signature wins like the one over FSU last year.

I would rather play with SMU, Tulsa, Tulane and Navy but I don't see any of the Texas schools in the big 12 letting UH move up. The only thing UH provides that is different from Rice is a large enrollment and they come with many more negatives.

They beat #24 Penn State in 2011. And #5 OSU on the road in 2009.

You can try your best to dismiss it or find ways to equate it to what we do, but its very clear to everyone (except for a few here) that the world cares about UH a lot more than they do about us.

as for the second bolded point, thats what Rice keeps saying to make ourselves feel better. Rather than pooh poohing at them, the sandwich boards and everything else, it might be prudent to swallow our ego and try to learn the good from them.

UH has 19K season tickets sold so far. How many does Rice have?

Follow-up question...do a lot of your season ticket holders not actually attend the games? The games I see on TV, your announced attendance seems to far exceed the actual amount of people in the stands.

Bailiff has put together back to back 4-year stretches of >.500 ball (2011-14, 2012-15) due in part to the "Sun-Beltification" of CUSA in 2013.

Frankly, Rice should be a dominant program in that league. And so I understand why 2015 sticks in the craw of some Owl fans who demand more of their program and coaches.

Hope you have a better season this year.

CUSA became a creampuff conference when schools like UH left. Well exemplified by 2013 -- down by 3 TDs late in the game in an eventual loss to UH, but winners of CUSA.

You're being far too generous on the >.500 ball - adding the records together helps to inflate numbers and elevate bad years.

Looking at the data since Jess Neely, there has never been a 4 year stretch where the team went >.500 each year. We are that bad historically. The '96-'99 stretch we went 7-4, 7-4, 5-6, 5-6. And DB has had a three year stretch, but that's it, as it was bracketed by a 4-8 and 5-7 season.

A lot more than 2015 is troublesome. Simply because the last decade has been better than the one before it doesn't make it good.

Neither will get us anywhere.

Don't get too carried away with using the result of a single game result for the conference champ to indite the quality of the conference. Per Sagarin - CUSA West and the AAC were only 5 pts apart in 2013. But then again, CUSA East was ranked below the Colonial...

But anyways, my point is that big picture, conference champs across the board lose games regular season games to random teams, both in an out of conference. Most notably, that year Baylor lost to UCF (AAC champ), and I don't think anyone would argue that the AAC was better than the Big 12 that year (Sagarin shows > 20 pt difference). Also, Stanford that year lost to 5-7 Utah and Michigan State lost to Notre Dame (9-4).

Apparently, some think UH was the filling in the creampuff.
