That's history.

This. This is baseball history. Watch and enjoy.

I'm containing my excitement for now because the regular season record and run differential are fun to talk about, but they'll be meaningless if we don't win it all. Nevertheless, I saw an interesting article today chronicling the best team starts after 30 games and all but one of the teams reach the World Series. I can't find the article that I saw posted, but I googled and found this, "Only one of the last seven teams to start 24-6 or better failed to reach the World Series, and that was the Oakland Athletics in 1981, who lost in the ALCS."

We're playing for October, and this team has an excellent chance to make it to the World Series. They're hitting on a cylinders as a team, but there are individuals that history shows will improve as the weather warms (Rizzo, Heyward and probably Soler). Only Fowler is playing above his historical performance, and there are several young players that seem ready to take the next step, namely Baez. Grab one more arm (Grey or Archer will do nicely), and this team is going to scary.

Of course, there will be a team that makes a nice addition and gets hot in September. This regular season won't be nearly as much fun as last when I had no expectations, but the first 30 games have been unbelievable, especially considering the franchise's history.

RE: 2016 MLB Thread
I'll add this, Arrieta is noticeably different than he was at the end of last year. He hasn't been nearly as sharp to start this season and he didn't have his best stuff during his no-hitter. I realize that he's 6-0 with the NL's best ERA, but he's not unhittable right now. Not sure how much it has to do with Miggy being on the DL, but something to watch over the summer.

Hammel and Lester have both been very good to start and the bull pen has been great too. Castro for Warren has paid off early (probably for both teams). Grab one more starter, as I mentioned, move Hendricks to the pen, and let Hammel and Lackey fight for the 5th spot in the rotation.

That's the thing, Jake is so good right now, even on a day where he isn't at his best,(i watched much of the game sunday) He still winds up giving up 2 with 7 k's in 6 which is a great day for most.

Not that it matters, but I would've given Bryant an error on the double that scored Harper. If they scored it that way, he would've only given up one earned.

It wasn't the runs that would make him off that day it was the uncharacteristic 4 walks. Although i think a few were the proverbial middle finger to Harper. Wish the Yanks would have employed this strategy a long time ago with Floppy.

True. I didn't see the game but read that he had good movement, just couldn't locate. Ross said that Arrieta wasn't walking Harper intentionally. I can't imagine Arrieta had a game plan to work around Harper early in the game.

Harper seems to be equally talented and immature, and his talent is significant. Getting pitched around is obviously frustrating him, and appears to be a good strategy. Dusty Baker brings a lot to the position, but I don't think calming Harper is going to be included. Dusty seems to wear his emotions on his sleeve as well.

I just hate that they don't play again this year. As a middle infielder, I'm not made at Odor though. I'm pretty old-school, so I didn't love the bat toss, but I think it has been overblown.

I'm a middle inf too (sitting with ice on shoulder after softball game :))and I think that slide was dirty as hell. That was one of the best punches I've witnessed in baseball

No question, it was dirty (unless he played for StL, in which case it was respecting the game. Did I mention they have the best fans in baseball?) Rarely get to see a punch landed; great punch by Odor. I've seen Michael Barrett comparisons, but Odor had more behind it...sounds like he'll get 8-10 games.

Mike n Mike had Buster Olney on this morning, sounds the there was a good number of players that were glad to see it. They also mentioned 8-10. Sucks, he's on my fantasy squad and was hitting really well.

THOR!!!!!

What a huge outing. Every one of these Mets-Nats games are gonna be like playoff games this year. Dude was pumped. He hit 100+ MPH seven times in the first inning alone. Also nice to see Grandy set the tone with a HR in the first pitch of Scherzer's outing, after he'd just K'd 20 in his previous start.

Really looking forward to catching their game tonight on ESPN. This should be a good season series, perhaps the best divisonal matchup in the NL.

As ESPN went to the Nats game, I was desperately hoping for a ground out so he wouldn't break Kerry the Kid's record. I haven't combed through the annals of baseball, but Kerry Wood's line in that 1-hit, no-walks, 20-KO game has to be the best 1-hitter ever.

I've never seen a better slider than the one Wood was throwing that day. There's no word in the dictionary to describe how good it was.

He's young. He'll have plenty of opportunities. Plus, it's early this year.

Arrieta versus SF on Friday. Really looking forward to the June/July calendar with series' against NYM, CWS and Washington. Arrieta, Lester, Hammel, Lackey against those teams should be good baseball.

I can't believe how excited I am about Jason Hammel. I know what he's done the past two seasons in the second half, but with his dietary and mechanical changes, I have my hopes up that he can have a strong full season.

RE: 2016 MLB Thread
The Cubs finished the regular season last year 45-19 and have opened this season 47-20. That's a stretch of 92-39.

With Willson Contreras and Almora Jr. called up in the past two weeks, there aren't any other MiLB position players ready to contribute. There are 2-3 relievers on the farm that can help the BP, but this is the team we'll see for the next 4-5 years.

I really thought they'd make a move for a starter, but the starting rotation has been exceptional with a combined ERA of 2.32 well over 1/3 into the season. I'm not sure how long it will continue, but they definitely belong in the conversation for best staff in the majors (nearly 1 run better than the mets, giants & nats).

The Pirates have essentially been buried in the Central and they have 8 games coming up against the Giants and Dodgers. Plus, the Cards are closer to the Braves than the Cubs right now.

I've seen rumors regarding a major trade with the Yankees for Miller and/or Chapman, but those rumors include Scwharber/Baez + multiple high level prospects. First, Chapman and Miller for Scwharber would be a huge overpay by the Cubs. I'm certain Scwarber and Baez are in the long-term plans for Chicago. We'll get a reliever, but it won't be for either of those guys. Soler could be odd man out, plus there are a few prospects that deserve a shot, but are blocked by young, already proven talent. Secondly, despite the drought, Chicago isn't in a win now mode. This machine is built to contend for several years. Theo/Jed aren't going to overpay for a closer with significant character issues, IMO. I can't figure out why Cashman did either.

I don't agree. If you could get both those guys for Kyle, the Yankees would be over paying. Miller is one of the best closers in the game is under contract for an affordable 8 mil per year for 2 more years. That's a steal! I know Cubs fans are not used to being buyers, but that's how it works. Teams will over pay for a rental like Chapman if it gets you over the hump for a title. Whether or not you are built to win now, or long term, if you have ashot, you take it now. There are no guarantees . As a Yankee fan, i can say with 100% certainty that good teams on paper don't always win.
