You have to admit, it's funny that Ruff is taking Benkert with him... After all, he got fired for a season he tried to salvage with a converted WR at QB.

So, now he takes his QB with him to his new home.

He was in competition with Philip Nelson (former Minnesota starting QB) for the job. Neck and neck, but many thought Benkert had a leg up on Nelson.

Shouldn't be a drop-off from Benkert to Nelson.

The fact is that Nelson was the seasoned QB and the likely starter. Benkert had taken very few snaps at full football speed and those were against far less competition than Nelson faced. Nelson will thrive this year. We just don't need him to go down with an injury.

Reid Herring – FR – 6’3” 180lbs
Offers: ECU, Miami (FL), Boston College

John Jacobs – FR (RS) – 6’2” 200lbs
Offers: ECU, Arkansas State, Troy, UAB
*Received ZERO reps in Spring Game – reportedly unhappy and looking to transfer. Word is that the staff has no faith in his arm, and he doesn’t have the tools to switch positions.

Jason Connella - SO – 5’11” 200lbs (Walk-On)

Ray Smith – SO – 6’1” 187 (Walk-On)

Also - we are the favorites to sign a late addition:

Gardner Minshew – 6’2” 215lbs (JUCO – has 4 years to play 3)
Offers: ECU, Southern Miss, FAMU, SEMO, UT-Martin
*He threw for 3,288 yards and 28 touchdowns last season as a freshman.

Nelson
Minshew
Herring (Will likely redshirt)

Then 2017 season Minshew will likely start before Herring wins out his junior year.

Would it make more sense to move the Summers kid back to QB as your back up?

At least you know what you have with him, he’s game tested and gives you some versatility with his legs.

Just a suggestion.

It would not surprise me one bit to see Summers take a few direct snaps at RB and be involved with some razzle dazzle plays because of his QB skills. I don't think though that he will be use at QB any more. I could be wrong though if Nelson has an injury.

If you read the article you would find nothing funny about it...maybe inspiring though. Unlike some of my ECU brethren....I thought he should be terminated. That does not though reduce my admiration for the man. He is a top shelf human being. I have nothing negative to say about him as a person.

Where he is not even really coaching any offense let alone QBs...

Also I feel like coaches/schools should be banned from transfers from the new staff's old school. Recruits are fair game if they are unsigned, but transfers just feels wrong and vindictive.

Ruff is Assistant Head Coach though, which makes him the #2 man over there.

With Robert Anae running the offense (Ruffs friend from Texas Tech), getting a QB who is seasoned in Air Raid principles is HUGE!

Lincoln Riley has his finger prints all over this kid.

This transfer may have just won Virginia some games they wouldn't have won.

And lost ECU some games they would have won.

It can't be understated.

I don't feel bad for Compher. Lol. The coaching search turned into a fiasco, and now this.

It also can't be overstated. We all thought KB had a high ceiling, but how much do you know about a kid who has played all of 5 downs as a college QB and had not yet won the starting job at ECU. Time will tell.

Benkert left, in part, because he was not going to be the starter anyway. So as long as Nelson stays healthy ECU will be in the same position regardless (See excerpt from the local paper below). As far as him helping UVA, doesn't bother me. Wish him and Ruff the best.

http://www.reflector.com/ECU/2016/05/02/...lings.html

Benkert said he made his final decision to transfer ”about four or five days” after the Pirates’ April 16 spring game, likely after Montgomery revealed that senior former transfer Philip Nelson, with whom Benkert battled for repetitions throughout spring ball, would likely be the team’s starter this season.

Would you call Nelson a quitter too? He left a P-5 to come here. How about the kid from WF transferring in BB? The twins at State we looking to land? Are they quitters as well???

Nelson was a totally different circumstance.

Kurt is leaving because he's pissed he had to actually compete for QB1 and lost. No matter what he says that is the reasoning, his history shows us that.

Here is a little info on Minshew... He signed with Troy early out of high school. He left there and transferred back to MS to play juco ball in hopes of obtaining a better offer.

I have a good friend who is a friend of his family. He told me that Southern Miss tried very hard to get him to walk-on, but Gardner was not willing to go to H'burg without a schollie. He was planning to go back to juco another year until the recent ECU offer.

I have been told that he is now committed to ECU. From what I have been told about him, he will be a good teammate, and could be a good Div 1 QB in the right system with a good supporting cast. Hope this works out well for Gardner and ECU.

This is true. He has never done that before. However, I do think he is more than capable of mastering this difficult skill.
