Quote:Perhaps not surprisingly, Pastner doesn’t golf, finding the four or five hours spent on a course to be an unproductive use of time. He wants his assistants to believe the same.
“My first question to anyone I (might) hire is, ‘Do you golf?’” Pastner said this week. “If they say, ‘Yes,’ you can’t work for me, because that means five hours on a Sunday or on a Saturday. Can’t. Don’t want it. That’s for my assistant coaches. Any of my assistant coaches, if they’re golfers, not working for me.”

I support the Memphis HC...not any one dude...Cal, Pastner, Tubby...but I still don't hate Josh, and I wish him well at GTech...he left with honor, a soft landing spot, and a lot of $$$
Well said. I was as unhappy as most with Coach Pastner while he was here. But the constant bashing on this thread is so unnecessary and moronic.
Don't get why you would hate someone who gave it his best shot and failed. He didn't force anyone to give him the head coaching job here. He didn't lie or begrudge anyone associated with the school or athletic program.
Yet, many here are just piling on with anger and vitriol, bashing him over mundane things like being very demanding of himself and the people who work for him.
Really??
Are you kidding? This guy started driving this program into a ditch from day one. How on earth could you defend him? "He gave it his best?".
BTW I’ve had some of my best creative ideas while playing a couple of rounds of golf, mostly solitaire. Quiet and the only sounds out there are created by Mother Nature.
Hey works for me and maybe Josh should get into more ONE time.

It was just painful to listen every week.
Have not listened to a Tiger basketball coaches show in probably 4 years. We finally have a coach now that I would be interested to hear what he has to say.

He is getting hammered in Atlanta and nationally for these comments. If he thought all the criticism he received was due to his being at Memphis, that what he needed was to get away from this place where fans are from outer space; well, he has learned better. On second thought, I doubt the word "learned" is appropriate.
I think it was a shot at Penny to be honest. If he don't hire golfers then the whole "I asked Penny to be an assistant and he turned me down" story was just another one of his many lies

Who cares. He's a snake oil salesman POS!
dude went 130-44 his first 5 years, featuring 4 NCAAs and an NIT...he was CUSA COY...he wasn't "driving this program into a ditch"
he simply wasn't a good fit here...saw it...and found himself a soft landing spot which leaves us all better off (maybe even GT)
lets wish him well, and get behind Tubby Smith as Memphis coach.

That's a good point. Hadn't thought of that angle, but you might be right.

CUSA COY?
we didn't seem to think it was so bad when we had 30 wins, and a 16-0 conference record under Pastner...didn't we knock off St Mary's in the tourney that year?
