Tubby's situation was a little different.
He has been on the fringes between smaller programs the last decade, I don't think he expected a chance like this again. And he was being given a lot of respect at TT, something he didn't always get at UK and Minny. We are in an era were everyone wants young exciting coaches, so high demand for 64 year old HOF coaches is not really out there. Their loss, our gain imo.
We needed a Tubby Smith and Tubby needed a major program to come after him so he could make another run at a title. Tubby gives us things we never had in a coach, and we give him things he never thought he would have again.
This feels very right.

The United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock seats 15,000 but the average attendance for basketball games this year was about 6,000. So, that may have had an impact. Lubbock is not a very big market. And.....the sand storms can be rather annoying.

Tuesday at 5:30: AD Holcutt gets in contact via cell with Tubby. Tubby tells Alcott he and his wife in car on way to meet Tiger people in Amarillo! Holcutt begged, his words, Tubby not to make a rushed decision. Tubby said he wouldn't, "but that these Memphis people are very pursuasive."
Wednesday at 8:30: Holcutt said there was a meeting at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday with Holcutt, Tubby and boosters to discuss new practice facility. Says Tubby was a no-show, and didn't tell anybody he would not be there. Holcutt said he called, but Tubby "had gone silent on me."
Wednesday at 11:00: Holcutt said at 11:00, he got a call and "learned that Coach Smith was in Memphis, Tennessse". Man, Holcutt was pissed at this point.
Maybe I'm missing it but something seems out-of-sync here.
1. Tues night Tubby specifically tells Holcutt that he's driving to meet Memphis people. At this point, Holcutt knows what Tubby is doing. He should also know the nature of the process. That is, this meeting could take some time.
2. Tubby is a no-show for an 8:30 am mtg on Wed. Tubby didn't tell anyone he'd be a no-show? Then what was the call 15 hours earlier? I'm in the car driving to meet the Memphis people. Doesn't it make sense he's not driving to Amarillo, getting to Chile's and immediately sitting down with the Memphis people talking over chips and salsa? Chances are he's driving to Amarillo, getting a hotel room, getting a good night's sleep the talking with the Memphis people in the morning (Wed morning).
3. Wed at 11:00 Tubby's not answering his phone after being a no-show. Couldn't that be because he was actually IN the meeting -- the same meeting he told Holcutt about the night before -- with the Memphis people at that time? Maybe Tubby should've been ticked off that his AD was ringing his phone even though he told him he was going to be in a mtg.
Yeah, it doesn't really add up exactly like that. AD probably covering his rear end with upset boosters. But no matter to me.

Getting their kicks on Route 66 sealed the deal for the Memphis folks with Tubby in Amarillo - - the Big Texan Steak Ranch Challenge and participating in graffiti art at Cadillac Ranch.

Dude, he's 64. Where is he going?
something tells me UK won't try to poach this guy from us...
Nobody else wants him except for Texas Tech, and when you factor in the 3.1M salary, nobody else wants him at all.
Plus he has already been to the mountain top. He won't be battling within about never knowing what a true blood blood job was like. Been there, done that, got the hardware and the scars to prove it. He's been at the very top and the very bottom, and spent multiple years at both ends.
This may be just the place for him to finish out.

I don't care what our boosters have decided to pay him, If he were making 800k and sucked balls like Pastner did would you say "keep him he is cheap?"
I would say a minimum 60% of P5 teams would love to have him and 95% of non P5 would kill to have him.
Of course not. Id be ready to fire him if he sucks like Pastner did.
He was making 1.8 million at Texas Tech. How come no P5 school offered him, if 60% wanted him? Thats chump change for a P5 school. I concede your non P5 number is right, but virtually all of those schools can't pay him 3.1 million.

True. I used to fly to Lubbock a lot, two big hospitals, and a medical school. Kind of sympathized with them, cause Memphis takes unfair shots at times.
If you are a hunter or a fisherman, you would love west Texas. Problem with Lubbock is it feels so isolated out there. You are a such long way from anything.
I one time had more fun in a Lubbock Whataburger than should be allowed by law. True story.
Joe Ely* is from there too..........I know all about Buddy Holly too.
*for those that don't know he is the guy that wrote "The Road goes on forever, and the party never ends" not Robert Earl Keen
I love "Gallo del Cielo," on Live From Stubbs. Killer tune.
Watched the first west memphis 3 doc on hbo in a hotel room somwhere with joe and jesse taylor. They thought i was a rock star because i had worked in w mem when the thing happened. Weird night.
This was really fascinating. He said much more than I figured he would about the timeline. Sounded very much like once Tubby was approached, he was on the Tigers hook.
He sounded like he was about to cry, notice the two or three times right before he said Memphis that he took a little pause before saying the M word.
RE: FASCINATING - Read This - TX Tech AD Holcutt Press Conference - He's Pissed!
I hope our own program doubters begin to realize this whole scenario illustrates that the Tiger basketball brand has a lot more legs than they think it does.
RE: FASCINATING - Read This - TX Tech AD Holcutt Press Conference - He's Pissed!
True, G'town Tiger. To me, that's the best thing that has happened in the last week. Besides losing Pastner, of course. Every national columnist who wrote about the job said it was a good job.
One more thing, if your school has money, the P5 thing does not matter in basketball. It's the job, not the conference.
