I hope it was hyperbole.

I saw the best days of UAB Athletics first hand and as a student in the 80's. This team is close to having that talent. This team is on the cusp of being a juggernaut for many years. I want those days back.

Ingram has a great chance to be the hero here. But he can't treat hiring a basketball coach like its a circus act.

RE: Champlin: UAB speaks with current NBA player about head coaching position
The Jason Terry interview was leaked; most likely intentionally. This interview has garnered more national publicity for UAB than any interview leaked to date.

Jason Terry was not on anyone's radar, but he expressed serious interest in the job and got a interview. Big deal. Also, there are other "Haase" type candidates (Assistants from well known programs) who are being interviewed for this job, but names have not been leaked for obvious reasons.

Who knew Haase was interviewed prior to being announced he had the job? There might be reasons for pitch forks someday, but you'd be foolish to badger the man over interviews.

Mississippi State was targeting Haase while we were...but they didn't know we were going after him. If fans had badgered the process as much as they are trying to now, we may have never gotten him here.

Um, because he got a a really sweet job offer maybe? I'm sure the reasons are far more dire but of course they're all super secret.

dont forget to add that there were rumblings of wanting Haase fired just over a year ago...and THEN he got a really sweet job offer

More at play here than meets the eye. Much more than when Hasse was hired. All I'm sayin.

But, but, but, but, but that doesn't fit in with "you're a crackpot with a conspiracy theory" and the "you're just a blowhard fan, like me, so you can know anything important" crowds.

LOL

The rumblings were building last year as UAB finished the regular season with losses at FAU and FIU. That left UAB 16-15 overall and 12-6 in the conference. UAB won the next four games and the rest is history, but what a fine line. UAB beat WKU by 1; beat LaTech in OT; beat MT by 13; and then beat Iowa St. by 1. Then of course the team got clobbered by UCLA (17 points). It was an incredible four-game run, but two of the wins were by 1 point and another was in OT. That season was followed by one of the weakest schedules in UAB history. What a fine line between mediocrity and success, and a job offer from Stanford.

Yeah, it probably didn't have anything to do with finishing 16-7 after starting 4-9.

What about falling apart in his 2nd year with a senior heavy team + Chad Frazier?

That was Haases biggest failure IMO.

The guy is not John wooden. He was a pretty good coach that was getting better. His results were pretty good at UAB, but nothing crazy. I have my doubts about what he'll be able to do at Stanford..

Don't pull that on me. I'm not some casual Alabama fan you can dismiss like that.

I went to UAB. I've been a season ticket holder and donor for UAB. I was one of the initial 140 pledgers for the UAB Football Campaign. I went through it, same as you.

But this poisonous attitude is nuts. In a span of a month, this place has turned from a champion fanbase to a Donald Trump rally.

+1

Or a Bernie Sanders rally.

Well, the competition dropped off considerably after the 4-9 start.

Interview an out-of-nowhere candidate to get everyone distracted talking about that so you can conduct your interviews in peace without fans and reporters messing with your process.

UAB has some of the nuttiest, borderline unhealthy, fans ever. Remember when people were trying to contact and harass AD candidates so that they wouldn't take interviews and some even talked about driving to hotel/airport interview sites to protest. What sort of message is this sending to people?

Damn, some of you "fans" could be causing more damage than you think Ingram might do.

Probably the best thing I've every read on this board

Someone has to make that first connection in any interview process. It is called "networking" in most industrial business relations. At its best, it gives an employer the chance to meet every potential candidate. At its worst, it can also be the "Good ole boy's" insider process.

Terry said he isn't sure yet whether he'll retire at the end of the season, but he wanted to have options.

"In this business, you have to plan for your post-career," he said. "This is no different, being prepared. You always have to be prepared. Would I like to play a couple more years? Yes. But I have to leave my options open And if this offer is better than what I have on the horizon, then I'm going to have to jump head-first in it. There is some longevity in it, and it is my passion."

This should read: if everything else fails. Call me at home only as a last resort/option

It sounds like this interview was done as a courtesy to a friend of the program and to give Terry the experience of interviewing for a coaching job because that seems to be what he wants to do in the future. The offshoot is that it gave UAB some national exposure. I see absolutely nothing wrong with this.

RE: Champlin: UAB speaks with current NBA player about head coaching position
Just have to address this from BlazerMatt in the other thread...because it is an absolute lie.

Quote: You realize that Ingram wasn't even a the top 3 finalist for the AD job, right? He was hand picked by Watts over the objections of the search committee, surely you know this.

He was part of the process from the very beginning. There was an argument on whether he should be 4th or 5th in line...there was heated discussion on whether he should be the 4th pick because the thought was that one of their Top 3 may not make it through to the hiring process because they dropped out or were hired somewhere else before the process was complete....and it was known that anybody in the Top 3 could be hired by the administration.

If he was handpicked by anybody it was Frank Messina...who convinced the younger folks on the committee that Ingram deserved to be in the mix at 4, despite their reservations. Ingram was initially at 5...and Messina encouraged everyone to put him in at 4...as he was a favorite candidate of his. The top guy in the search dropped out, as many expected, and it put Ingram in the Top 3...as was also expected.

This kind of stuff should stay internal to the committee but instead we have people claiming to know stuff they don't just to defame a person. THE COMMITTEE SELECTED INGRAM. They knew what they were doing when they did it.

Get your facts straight and stop spreading garbage.
