wow, some great memories there....

I'm old enough to remember watching on TV the UCLA-Houston game in the Astrodome.

Exactly what I was thinking! These guys calling themselves old because of something that happened 25 years ago? Remembering when Reagan was shot? Heck I saw the UCLA-Houston game too, remember what I was doing when I heard Kennedy was shot and saw the Yankees play a doubleheader with the Kansas City Athletics when the Yankees still had Mantle AND Maris. Bunch of young whippersnappers... GET OFF OF MY LAWN!!

LOL!

Well I don't remember Kennedy getting shot, but I remember the magazines with that as the cover story sitting on my parent's coffee table.

#1 seed UNLV crushed #3 seed Duke 103-73 in the 1990 championship game. Duke was a #2 seed when they beat #1 UNLV the following year by TWO points. I know on paper it was an upset but it really was about UNLV losing their first game after going 34-0 up to that point which is absolutely incredible by any standard. It's a shame it had to end for UNLV in that manner but that's life in the the single elimination game tournament format. On the other hand, Duke went on to win back to back national championships after the 1990 finals embarrassment. That speaks to their HOF coach, talent, motivation and resolve to win showing they belonged.

Its not any bigger upset than Kentucky losing to Wisconsin last year. Its one game and UNLV and UK lost to a very good team.

If we're talking big upsets, what could be bigger than NC State beating Phi Slamma Jamma? Was the fix in on that game as well?

Do I have a faulty memory, or was the 1990 championship game the one where Bobby Hurley played through severe intestinal distress (OK - he had the runs) and spent much of the game running between the court and the locker room?

If we're playing "top this" I remember going to a doubleheader between the Yankees and the Philadelphia A's. Maris wouldn't get to the majors until several years later. In those days, the A's were a virtual farm team for the Yankees. The A's were always on the verge of bankruptcy, and kept selling their best players to the Yanks who always had deep pockets. Maris was one of those players.

The way Guy Lewis coached, I'm almost compelled to think the NC State and Houston game was fixed.

I'm pretty sure 1999 UConn over Duke is one of the biggest upsets in championship game history when it comes to point spreads. The Huskies were something like a 12 point dog.

The UH/NCSt, UNLV/Duke, Georgetown/Villanova and UK/Wisconsin are the biggest upsets in my memory. Probably UK/Wisconsin was 4th. There was a lot of doubt about somebody managing to go 40-0.

That game, by comparison to UNLV-Duke, didn't appear fixed. I was completely shocked that UConn not only could compete with Duke but beat them and not even have look like a major upset. Goes to show how much of a crapshoot the NCAA Tournament is, the 1999 and 2002 Duke teams were among the top 5 in Duke history but didn't hold up the trophy.

Had it been Notre Dame, who nearly pulled it off in the Elite 8, it would have been a much bigger upset.

The Georgetown/Nova one- while big to everyone else- not that much of a surprise to Big East Fans...
@ Nova- Georgetown won by 2 in OT.
@ Georgetown- Georgetown won by 7.

So it's not in the same realm as the other 3.

Yep. A number of the Villanova players and coaches over the years have said that they were more worried that they'd have to face St. Johns instead, who had beaten them three times.

What? NC State had more McDonald's All-Americans than Phi Slama Jama, who had some top shelf talent but a huge dropoff after that, especially if Olajuwon wasn't on the floor. Wisconsin, while not on Kentucky's plane, was a top seed. Even Duke was a 2-seed looking for revenge in 1991.

You may be right that it may not be in the same realm because it's by far the biggest upset of the group.

That's because they did.

That Duke team had Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley, Christian Laettner and 2 other 2nd round picks in Thomas Hill and Antonio Lang. Looking back, one can see how they beat UNLV who had Larry Johnson and to a lesser degree, Greg Anthony. Don't get me wrong, Stacey Augmon and Anderson Hunt were good college players..but they didn't measure up to the overall talent Duke had that year. That's why they lost.

That..and they were hardly challenged all year...

NCSU had something like 9 losses. As I recall, it was the most by any champ up to that time. They were a different team when they got that one player back from injury. That was a huge shocker to the nation. UH-UL was the "championship game."

Wasn't David Lattin's son in this year's tournament? Or was it the NIT he was in?

In my book, though, Nova may have had the single best game ever played in the tournament. Georgetown didn't play badly. Nova's shooting was otherworldly.

NC State dealt with some injuries and adversity and oh yeah, they played in the ACC, which had two number 1 seeds and another good team in Maryland (surprisingly Coach K and Duke were nowhere to be found).

NC State was an underdog, but it's not like they were George Mason. They had the players to repeatedly beat high level competition, even if they weren't expected to.

EDIT: the ACC actually only had 1-top seed but there was also Michael Jordan's UNC with a 2-seed, so basically tom-A-to/tom-AH-to.

What was it, 78% shooting? And they only won by two?

I think his grandson plays for Oklahoma.
