ECU and Memphis Fans
Any rumors on if and when a decision will be made about your coaches future?

Seems like schools want to make a decision prior to the tournament so they can start laying the groundwork for the new hire.

If ECU would hire Pastner, then we could kill two birds with one stone.

With a fresh start, Pastner might make someone a very fine coach. We spent 6 years training him. He is great recruiter, runs a clean program, graduates his players and will have learned from his mistakes here. He could make some AD look like a genius.

RE: ECU and Memphis Fans
Pastner would definitely be progress for ECU.
I wonder if he can actually grow into a solid HC, and he just needs a place with few expectations. That sounds like ECU.
He can recruit, that's for sure.

Its funny. You mentioned all the great things he does. I noticed you didn't say anything about actually coaching basketball.

Pastner is a great person to lead a basketball program....as long as coaching basketball isn't important to your program.

This is the review period now that our season is over. The financial situation makes it unlikely though.

Memphis wishes they had the 'financial situation' ECU does with his contract.
It's really not going to cost ECU a ton of a lot more money to can Lebo this year versus the next or the next. You only hold on to Lebo if you think he's the guy.
We saw how Ruff bit the dust. It's looking more like a difference in acceptable performance between football and basketball.

My gut is telling me that the loser mentality has won over. You might as well have us go back to FB only.

I’m sorry to hear that. With the conference getting 4 bids this season and all the other resources and exposure the conference brings to the programs I really do think with a decent X’s and O’s guy who is a good recruiter ECU can easily be a sub 150 RPI team in 2 seasons, 3 tops.

RE: ECU and Memphis Fans
The problem both ECU and Memphis have with the contracts are that you have to pay big time money for your next coach.

The bar is raised. $1.5 mill a year minimum for the next guy. Plus the payout to the other guy.

Just doesn't make financial sense to pay that $1.5 mill (or more) more.

That's what happened with Donnie Jones this year....UCF just had to play out his contract. Now they can move on....and hopefully salvage their best players in the process.

Wrong. Only Memphis has a big time buy out. Ours is peanuts in comparison. Sick of the poor mouth shite from ECU fans. Donors need to step up in this league ore slap on more student fees. This Lebo episode is making it blatantly obvious that we are committed to competing at a high level at BOTH revenue sports. This will hopefully sort itself out by the end of next season after we have ANOTHER disaster year riddled with transfers and losses.

I agree.

At Houston, our AD went full Tard and hired Tony Levine and James Dickey. James Dickey was actually hired as MBB coach at UH the SAME YEAR Jeff Lebo was at ECU.

Needless to say, that didn't go well and we had to eat the contracts. In year 2, Kelvin Sampson seems to finally have the program headed in the right direction.

So, when you finally decide to part ways with an under-performing coach, provide for another couple years after that for your program to start flourishing.

Time is money. James Dickey had a better record than Jeff Lebo too.

I didn't talk about the buyout, I talked about the cost of the NEW coach. ECU doesn't have the money for that.

I recall the UNCW AD a few years back talking about her search for a college coach. Set out with about a $400K budget...ended up paying Buzz Peterson $600K. She said she was surprised the cost to get a coach had climbed so much.

That's my point...in this league, you better be willing to pay $1.5 or more. ECU is not ready for that. We will see if UCF and Tulane are...but they waited until they didn't have buyouts to deal with to make that decision.

RE: ECU and Memphis Fans
According to the Commercial Appeal this morning, Pastner has interest from TCU and UCF.

Could Pastner strike a deal with Memphis and leave for UCF or TCU or some other opening where he'll get a fresh start?

I think there's a strong possibility that could happen with Memphis paying the difference in salary.

I don’t think you need to come close to 1.5 million to get a good coach, especially a young one looking to make a name for himself in a top 8 basketball conference. Dunphy only makes $800,000.

Look at some of the names on here and their numbers last season:

http://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries...all/coach/

Bobby Hurley at Buffalo $305,000
Bryce Drew at Valpo $285,000
Steve Massiello at Manhattan $237,000
Mike Davis at Texas Southern $230,000
Bob McKillop at Davidson $381,000
Archie Miller at Dayton is only making $680,000

I’m not saying the guys listed above will leave their jobs and go to ECU I’m just saying it’s very realistic to find a young coach who can turn your program around for well under $1,000,000.
