Is the Sun Belt a better option?
Say JMU gets invited, you'd have JMU, App State, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Coastal Carolina among others. How is that line up any worse than F_U's, North Texas, UTSA, etc?
Much closer to us, reduced travel costs, better chance for rivalries. What do you think?

Gross. We would have two recent I-AA transitions in Coastal and JMU and then a bunch of nowherevillles in Boone, Statesboro, and the rest of the random collection that makes up the Sun Belt. They only thing they have on CUSA is a trip to The Vortex and Mary Mac's in Atlanta when you play GA State and a conference tournament in New Orlenas.

Said this in another thread, but the Sun Belt isn't a better option because whatever advantage is enjoyed by having a couple more drivable games is more than negated by the lower TV contract and optics. If they ever reorganize the two conferences among party lines (the realignment board's great white whale), then sure, I'd be OK with it (though I'd miss Southern Miss and Lousiana Tech, which almost certainly would be a part of the western conference). Otherwise, pass.

RE: Is the Sun Belt a better option?
The problem here is that the Sun Belt is not an "option", and JMU is not going FBS.

The overwhelming likelihood is that we are in CUSA for the foreseeable future; at least until the end of the GoRs in 2025/2026.

I agree with what you said right now, but if C-USA's basketball and football play continues to be abysmal, the Sun Belt might catch up. I wish we had a few super rich alumni that would step up and donate whatever amount of money might convince the AAC to invite us. I know it isn't that simple so don't take that statement too serious.

Imagine conference games against UConn, Temple, Navy, ECU, Cincinnati, and Memphis.

Sorry, I'll stop dreaming now.

I personally feel like we should have made a bid to join the MAC. They have a better TV deal and they get those midweek MACtion games on ESPN which gives the institution lots of exposure when not much else is on TV sports wise and there are some strong teams in the MAC for football (UNI, Bowling Green, Toledo) and in basketball they are better than CUSA #10 in conference RPI compared to #22 for CUSA http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketba...conference just my thoughts but as it is now it looks like CUSA for the foreseeable future

We are in CUSA because the frenzy of realignment had no end in sight, and CUSA wanted to stock up to protect itself against "poaching".

We got "lucky" because the very influential ECU AD, Terry Holland, made a case for us as a travel partner for ECU, and a top 50 television market.

There was no "making a bid" for the MAC, although as I understand it, Wood called virtually every conference in America in order to assess possibilities when VCU left the CAA. They all were not interested.

RE: Is the Sun Belt a better option?
Plus it's easy enough to say the MAC is a better choice now, when they have a top 10 conference RPI (though no second NCAA bid) in the same season that CUSA hit the s#its, and will end up with a better football contract with ESPN exposure while we're hoping the channel that says it's televising the game through ASN isn't running another game or an 80s rerun.

(Seriously, the DC ASN affiliate broadcast the UT-Rio Grande Valley-Chicago State game a couple of nights ago. Isn't running anything -- infomercials, community-access rejects, the Emergency Alert System -- better than that?)

But enter the MAC, and say goodbye to anyone even remotely regional while saying hello to Western Michigan and Ball State on a Tuesday night in November. Which is fine if ODU was in the Rust Belt; not so much in the South/Mid-Atlantic/whatever the hell this place is.

There's always going to be a grass-is-greener thinking while ODU is somewhere other than the P5 or the AAC. But warts and all, I still believe CUSA is the best place for the Monarchs.

Wow, no one else wanted us? I need to take off my blue shaded glasses, since I thought there would be at least minimal interest in us. Or our media market.

That is gonna pack the house for sure. The Gwinnett Arena is nice but eh? If they can't draw in New Orleans they have bigger issues than C-USA has.

Its not a simple as just saying nobody wanted us. There are specific reasons. The MAC, like it or not, likely has a problem with our academic profile, as they are one of the few conferences that still value that. A10 is another story. If we were serious about going there and leaving football in the CAA somehow, I think they would have been very interested, but as a cursory discussion, I am sure they were not willing to take a team that they felt would be looking to move for football reasons at their first chance. When it came down to it, there were only two conferences willing to take football schools that they knew would rather not be there long term.

Have you looked at EMU's and Akron's academic profiles?
The MAC didn't want us primarily because they didn't have any reason to expand, period.

http://herosports.com/collegefootball/ra...ic-ranking
USA Today's rankings are almost identical.

The A10 does not want a football school, CAA or otherwise. It would not even take UR now.

RE: Is the Sun Belt a better option?
I thought getting into the Sun Belt was a good idea in 1982. I was wrong then. I don't think I'd be wrong saying that it would not be a good idea today. But then again 4 of those 1982 members are together again in C-USA. It's like we never left. And the tournament is in Birmingham just like it was for 4 of the 9 years we were in the SBC. Now it's 2 of 3 in Birmingham since we joined C-USA. Some things never change.
