Duke over UNC, any day of the week.
This pretty much sums it up. I used to have a lot more respect (not like as in a fan) for Duke before K got into the one and done stuff.
What do you mean " one and done stuff."
Recruiting guys (usually top tier talent) that will almost certainly only be in college for the minimum one season before they enter into the NBA Draft.
Some people argue that it is ruining the game of college basketball but conveniently ignore how the pig is slaughtered in the rest of collegiate athletics.
should you really have to explain that to anyone who's on a collegiate sports message board? i want to say fit is doing a really great job at playing a 12 year old

Welcome to my issues with a majority of bama fans. 90% of them never sat in a class on campus there.
So I guess fans of a particular school have to have attended or have family that attended that school. Oh come on that is crazy. If that were the case there wouldn't be many people watching the games. This whole "walmart" fan talk is bs. Most people don't attend the college of the big time college team they pull for and a whole not of people don't attend college at all. Most people pull for the team they grow up pulling for.
totally. who gives a f*ck what team you support. when i was at college at uc, all my friends went to miami and we still all root for uc. that sh!t is so stupid. what if you never went to college? a lot of people don't. what if you only went to a community college? having mass appeal is kinda what colleges want. hell, i'm a fan of appy st cuz i've been to boone and think it's a helluva town. i root for wisconsin because it's my home away from home. i root for dayton because i miss playing them and like what they got going on. i'm not super fans of these schools but i choose to support them even though i only went to school at uc

But why hate Duke? Maybe because they have one of the highest graduation rates for athletes. Maybe because it has had great success on the courts.
For whatever reason, Duke seems to represent the face of white privilege. (Meme: Everyone knows the Duke lax players got away with rape because their 1% parents hired the best lawyers.)
It can't be the team color. One only needs to compare the makeup of the Duke squad with that of Wisconsin's to see the fallacy there. (By the way, if the Dept of Labor did a disparate impact study of Wisky basketball, they would confirm it's a racist program. But I digress.)
Maybe it's Coach Ks Army background and association with the cretin Bob Knight.

I think you nailed it with this comment.
Yep, that's what those Michigan players said in that ESPN 30 for 30. Rose mentioned how he disliked Laettner for that reason and even disliked Grant Hill because he "had good parents", etc. Clearly racists (at least concerning Laettner) comments that were overlooked.
I have no love for Duke but respect the school. Anyway, being from NC it's widely known that most Duke students come from up North. There' a reason the school is called "The University of New Jersey - Durham".
Which 30 for 30 was that? I seem to recall the Jalen Rose comments came from the Fab Five one, and not the Laettner one.

Well for those of us in North Carolina it is really on an island. It is an elite school with a very small instate student body. I'm in my fifties and I can count on one hand and still give the peace sign the number of people I have known in all those years that went to Duke. That tends to limit it's fan base at home, but there are more Duke fans here than there use to be, especially during basketball season.
I think the dislike here is totally different from the dislike nationally.
My wife is from NC and she too went to Duke. Definitely Carolina and NC State are the dominate schools in the state, which makes sense. Wake is also a smaller, private institution....but no hate for them. Of course, some might say that Wake has rarely competed much athletically (except during the Tim Duncan years).

Because clearly Duke was racist.
I just don't think Rose fit Duke. It had nothing to do with his race. I think Coach K tries to go after guys that he doesn't have to worry about once they leave practice for the day or during the summer. It's a about attitude and character and fitting into a team. And generally these dudes come from suburbia.
As to makeup of Duke students, my years there it was NJ/NYC and Florida that were the two largest draws. But contrary to the belief of some locals, NC was 5th...so, they actually do accept kids from the state. Regardless, if you go to Chapel Hill or NC State and then go to Duke, you will notice a difference in the student body.

This is exactly what Rose was talking about. According to him, there was nothing to worry about from the Fab five because they had no indication that they were gangsters, thugs, or inner city trouble kids but yet they weren't recruited by Duke.
That doesn't make Duke racist as someone else sarcastically suggested but it created a perception to these kids that they weren't good enough to be part of Duke.
I live far, far, far away from the state of North Carolina. Yet, there is no team in all of sports (whether college or pro) that I hate more than Duke. That includes the Green Bay Packers since, as a Chicago Bears fan, there is at least a mathematical chance every once in awhile where I need the Packers to actually win for the Bears' playoff prospects. In contrast, there is absolutely no scenario where Duke winning is beneficial in any way to anything that I care about.
It has nothing to do with privilege of Duke (as I'm perfectly cool with schools like Stanford, Northwestern and Vandy). Over the years, the teams that I have come to hate the most are the ones with the "holier than thou" attitudes where they supposedly "do it the right way" and their fans are so blind that they actually believe it. See the Packers with their "community-owned" team. See the St. Louis Cardinals and the "best fans in baseball". See Notre Dame and Michigan fans try to one-up each other in arguing that they are supposedly so much more clean than their rivals at USC and Ohio State despite having tons of their own dirty laundry.
I know enough about sports that it's complete B.S... and Duke is the absolute WORST offender. Their fans don't just think that they have a better basketball team than you... they actually think that they are better PEOPLE than you. Duke is no cleaner in the recruiting game than anyone else (even long before the current one-and-done era). I'll take schools like Kentucky, UNC or Ohio State that unabashedly do everything possible to win and doesn't pretend that they don't have any dirt on them any day over the sanctimonious crap we hear from Duke (just as the New York Yankees and their upfront monolithic spending offend me much less than the disingenuous Cardinals). Duke is the worst and it's not even close.
(P.S. I know that there are a bunch of ECU fans on the board, so I understand that many of them may hate UNC more compared to Duke. However, I just see that as a fairly typical in-state dispute between the flagship and the other public universities. Duke is "special" in that the hatred for them is transcendent and national. UNC is "just" a power basketball program from a national perspective and little more than that. In contrast, Duke is a proxy for all things pompous and arrogant in sports.)

The perception is reality to a lot of people.
I agree and yes, I was being sarcastic above. Anyway, Rose seemed to have as much contempt for Grant Hill as he did the like of Hurley or Laettner. It probably had more to do with "social class" than race.

Absolutely. I got the impression that they felt like they had to go to Michigan because they had no other choice. Some of them were recruited by other schools but I got the impression that they felt dissed and that is why they chose to stick together after becoming friends in high school.

It's not about being a gang member or thug...they just didn't fit into the type of atmosphere that is Duke. For one thing, Duke is about the team and not the individual...and, that seems like something Coach K has always prided himself on. Also, Duke had an unspoken policy that players stayed until their junior year. For many years, Coach K would bypass any player that might leave earlier than that.
Every team has a philosophy that they use in recruiting players. The same goes for the pros. Talent sometimes is not the only measure of evaluation.
Jalen should feel proud that he went to Michigan. That is an awesome institution with great people. He wanted a basketball scholarship and UM was one of many schools that offered him. He could have applied to Duke, if the education was what he was looking for.
