Middays with Greg and Eli
I cannot believe what I just heard. I like Greg and I like his show but I can't believe he just said that he doesn't believe we're a top 25 program. That is after him being here all these years...seeing Cal's run and should know the history by now and he said that. WOW...just when I didn't think anything could shock me anymore.

Yeah with how we've let it diminish I guess I couldn't argue that now.

Historically I don't think thats the case though.

Doesn't surprise me. I heard Greg sometime last year on Edminson's morning show and he stated, matter of factly, that he was not a Memphis Tigers fan. He doesn't have any affection for the school or program, but he discusses them every day because that's what his audience wants to hear.

Guess that makes sense and is true. I'd say the same about Parrish...i've listened to his show for years now and i've never heard him say he's a fan so I guess I or others shouldn't expect him to talk or react to this stuff like he is one.

I find it hard to believe people still listen to radio or have cable.

In 2012, ESPN ranked the top 50 programs of all time: Memphis was 19th.

http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketbal...19-memphis

Positives: Three Final Four appearances, including two trips to the national title game; eight other Sweet 16 appearances; 13 regular-season conference titles (eight since 1995); eight consensus All-Americans; six top-10 picks; had the nation's sixth-most points in John Calipari's nine seasons.

Negatives: Lost 27 points due to sanctions and vacated wins; missed NCAA tournament for first 10 years of this study; only two conference titles in first 20 years of study.

Greg is Maryland all the way and I think he jumps off Tiger bandwagon quicker than most local media. Sometimes it has to do with jobs associated with university-his son does work for UofM. But it is in best interest of all local media for Memphis to do well.

Too bad they can't get their facts straight; if not for 27 pt deduction for infractions and 62-69 period, Memphis would have been in 13-15 range. And you don't fall that quickly in 3 years when the ranking criteria was 50 years.

Top of head:

More important programs culturally, no brainer division:
- Duke, UNC, Kansas, Indiana, UCLA, Kentucky

Programs with greater success and/or resources:
- Michigan St, Arizona, Ohio St, Florida

Programs that can be considered to be more important by reasonable people:
- Syracuse, Michigan, Texas, Villanova, Georgetown, UConn, Maryland

Peers that would probably rank above us:
- Louisville

Common class peers we compare to:
- Cincy, Temple, New Mexico (?), Arkansas, Illinois, Pitt (?), USC(?)

>>>>

I'm doing this quickly, so I'd guess we'd rank historically and 'program brand' wise in the 20-40 range. Slight hit since the AAC and conference realignment have hurt our position.

I can a case for as high as... 15th? As low as... low 40s? Pretty subjective topic...

Arkansas is higher due to winning a title.

Sure, maybe, but you can't fall into that trap. Marquette isn't on that list, nor is UNLV ('91, less than 16 years ago).

I don't automatically cede position to Arkansas.

But, having said that, you say pa-tay-TOE, I say pah-TAH-do, neither of us is wrong really, just a valid case can be made either way.

Hence a range of 15 to mid 40s, beauty is in the eye of the beholder 03-wink

15-40? You really put a lot of thought in that. Think I will go by ESPN rankings.
