RE: Georgia Southern hires Tyson Summers as head coach
Hatcher's offense was bad in 2009 because all of our starting receivers were true freshmen and our OL couldn't block anything. When Gillespie and Hatcher got to GS in 2007 they built an offense around Jayson Foster that almost carried us to a SoCon championship.

People remember what they want to remember about the Hatcher years. The problem was never what was done on Fall Saturdays, but what was done in the offseason.

If this staff has the connections people are saying, we will soon find out as the dead period is ending. If recruiting fizzles out then that is not a good sign as that appears to be the main reason behind it the hire.

No doubt a high risk/ high reward hire. You never know how someone handles having to be "the man" the first time.

Nothing new here. They'll all be successful or looking for jobs in 12 months.

Judging a staff on how well they do with 1 month of recruiting is not a fair indicator.

I do remember Fritz going on a tear and leading us to the #1 class in the same timeframe. And he was new to the area. If our recruiting fizzled out then that would be a bad indicator.

That said, hopefully things pick up here shortly on the recruiting front.

RE: Georgia Southern hires Tyson Summers as head coach
Posing an off-the-wall question here...

We aren't the only school in Georgia that seems to be hiring coaches with an eye toward their ability to recruit in addition to their ability to coach. UGA seems to have hired a number of really good recruiters. Does this (1) hurt GaSo, (2) have no effect on GaSo, or (3) help us?

Looking at this in maybe a contrary way, I think this is good news for GaSo. UGA didn't hire these guys to steal 3-star recruits away from GaSo. They hired them to steal 5-stars from Alabama. For every 5-star UGA signs, there's a 3- or 4-star guy in state who doesn't get the offer from UGA. In my opinion, those are the guys with whom we can win. They come with lots of skills and, in many cases, a chip on their shoulders, and something to prove to themselves and to everybody else. Additionally, these are the guys whose HS coaches would look favorably on recruiters from Georgia Southern.

Thoughts, opinions...?

UGA recruiting has zero impact on GS recruiting. Once in a blue moon they may steal a player like last year so maybe the impact is .01%

Ridiculous batch of hirings. This is Hatcher part two. Gillespie is a schnuck. Summers is going to start hiring cousins to really stick the nail in the coffin.

RE: Georgia Southern hires Tyson Summers as head coach
http://www.underdogdynasty.com/2016/1/6/...ern-eagles

Quote:-The deal is for four years, expiring Dec. 31, 2019.

-Summers' base salary is $300,000, plus $50,000 per quarter for media and fundraising compensation, to reach $500,000 before any incentives. That salary can rise as high as $745,508 in year four depending on incentives.

-Buyouts: This is the part fans tend to be interested in. If the coach wins a lot the question is how much he'd pay to leave. If he loses a lot the question is how much the school would pay him to leave. For Summers' contract it's straightforward because the buyout numbers are the same for both parties: $1.2 million in year one (Dec. 4, 2015-Dec. 31, 2016), $900,000 in year two (calendar year 2017), $600,000 in year three (2018) and $300,000 in year four (2019).

Interesting bit when reviewing the Fritz and Summers contract:

Quote:When reviewing the two, one thing jumped out at me immediately. Both contracts have the same language under section 10 ("Personal Services"). This reads that head coach agrees "not to seek, to apply, or to accept" another coaching job without first notifying the athletic director.

However, Summers has an additional paragraph under section 4 ("Head Coach's Duties"), labeled 4.8, which does not appear in Fritz' contract.

It reads:
Duty to Report Employment Offers: During the term of his employment by the University, Head Coach shall notify the Athletic Director of any offers of employment, employment opportunities, or requests for meetings or discussions with respect to possible employment opportunities before engaging in substantive discussion regarding such employment or employment opportunities.
What could have caused the new instructions? No way to know for sure but it looks like Fritz may have circumvented the original deal by having advanced negotiations with Tulane without telling Kleinlein, but not officially applying for or accepting the job. If they contacted him first he technically didn't seek it. As for the reports Fritz expressed interest in the Iowa State job? He denied them, so who knows.

Heard GaSo hiring former App running backs coach, Foster. He recruited Marcus Cox, Jalin Moore, Shaedon Meadors, Mock Adams, Josh Boyd and Terrance Upshaw to App. He resigned for undisclosed reasons from App in June of 2015. He appeared to be on track to be headed to a P5 program before leaving App unexpectedly. This would be a great get for GaSo if it comes to fruition.

It has often been said that UGA and GT have neglected South Ga the last 20 years as Atlanta's population boomed.

Summers' strategy could be to try and make Ga Southern "South Georgia's" team. Now we know that UGA will hold that title for the foreseeable future, but even putting a dent in that would be tremendous. We know in high school football there is a lot of rivalry between North and South Ga so creating that at the college level would be interesting.

no doubt Foster did a great job for us, and he would be a great hire for GS. What happened for him to leave so suddenly, and without any explanation from the school or Foster, is any bodies guess, could have been personal, discipline, who knows. I would think that the GS new coach would find out why he left App, and if he is hired, the HC is satisfied that Foster will not be a problem for his staff.

There are reasons for that beyond population boom. Kids had trouble staying eligible, staying out of trouble, etc... but could run like a scalded dog.

We are not making South Ga fall in love with GS unless we beat uga and FSU numerous times and or rack up a ton of other P5 wins. Then end.

Arkansas talent just doesn't cut it for us. We have to go all over the south.

Big time. Coach Summer said he wanted people that can recruit this State, and that is exactly what he got.

Fritz and Monken recruited this state fine. Winning, playing time and location are the biggest things recruits consider. Kids are not coming to any school because the coach is from the state or used to coach at a GA high school. Either a guy can recruit or he cant. McGee was a state championship coach and main recruiter how are these guys any different? The recruiting thing is being blown way out of proportion.

I don't know, I try to be level headed but I don't like these hires. Gillespie has had the job before and it didn't work out so why are we doing this again???

It was widely known then that Hatcher handcuffed Gillespie.

First I ever heard this. I did hear BVG overruled plays but not Hatcher.

RE: Georgia Southern hires Tyson Summers as head coach
So we now haveā€¦

1) A HC who was an assistant under Brain VanGorder (every GS fan's least favorite coach)
2) A RB coach from App State
3) A S&C Coach from Georgia State (well, he was there at one time)
4) A Furman Defensive Line Coach
5) A co-OC who was OC for a head coach who was fired

Not saying any of that stuff matters, just thought it was funny a lot of our coaches have backgrounds with rivals and the Dark Age of our football program.
