Long weekend in NC - Beginning of Conference play
Conference play starts and NU faces two tough road challenges in Elon and UNCW. Ideally I would like to start out 2-0 but we will have to get the most out of our guys to do so.

We always tend to lose to UNCW, whether they are good or bad, and they seem to be pretty good this year. To be honest, I don't think one weekend will teach us a whole lot about the relative strengths of these teams. If last year was any indication, it's going to take the entire season to separate the CAA, since in any game, any team can beat any other.

I think Jeremy Miller can really be a catalyst for this team if he starts putting together consistent performances. He's got the skill and size for it. Maybe Gresham can be this year's Begley? He looked good last night vs. NC State. Begley has been fairly poor lately, but we know he has talent, and know he has the confidence, I think he needs more playing time.

And hopefully Williams' injury isn't too severe.

I'm thinking NU 75 - Elon 70, and NU 80 - UNCW 79

But I'm forever an optimist.

Vegas has us at 2.5 point favorites vs. Elon.

I think the most interesting matchup of the day is Charleston @ JMU.

I would also bet one of WM, Hofstra, and UNCW will lose at home while heavily favored, but who is anybody's guess.

RE: Long weekend in NC - Beginning of Conference play
A good win by NU. Walker and Ford got their points and we got a nice road win to start off CAA play.

I don't think we played that well however.
-Elon broke down our defense time after time and missed open looks through out the game.
-Stahl didn't do much after the first few minutes of the game. Miller didn't have a big impact either.
-Abakah is a liability on the offensive side of the ball. We need Green to step up and start playing some impactful minutes this season.
-Coen had us playing not to lose with about 6 minutes left in the game. We stopped playing basketball and every possession let the clock run down to 8 seconds before thinking about shooting. Our 15 point lead dwindled down to 7 by the end of the game. The highlight of this was Mr. 50% 3PT shooter Donnelly passing up an uncontested 3 pointer with 15 left on the shot clock at the 4:30 mark of the game. He got the ball back with 6 seconds left and wildly drove to the basket in desperation, committing a charging foul. Come on Coen.

Good news is Gresham looks like he is very comfortable on the court. We need more of our freshman to look like that.
Also, Ford looked like Lebron James out there physically. With his height and build in the CAA, he needs to drive to the basket more because he is tough to stop. He's done better this season, but I'd like to see more.

On to UNCW!

Looking forward with much anticipation to our game with you guys Saturday. Should be awesome. Has to be the CAA "marquee" game of the week, right?

I would think so, at least based on last season's results. I'm thinking the Vegas line will be UNCW -2.5 or -3.

Charleston @ W&M should be a good one too.

Does NU have another message board with some activity, or does basketball not have any support? After an NCAA bid for the first time in forever, and a really good OOC record to start the year, i'd have expected the interest level to jump up this year.

Seems you're a tree falling in the forest that nobody hears over here...here...here....

They post at Diehard Dogs, but you have to pay to be a member, and only members can read posts.

Several other CAA teams have boards not on this site (Delaware, Charleston, Elon, Hofstra, Towson), but all of those are free.

Exactly.

When DHD first went online, visitors used to be able to post for free like any other message board.

But in 2006, we opened the football season at home vs Georgia Southern. The week leading up to the game their posters got all juvenile and made crass, idiotic smack talk posts.

Soon after the game it went to a pay site.

I don't think there are enough NU fans who care to converse with others not associated with NU.

But between hoops and hockey there are over a 3,000 who are paid members. Just sayin'

If you come over to NU's section in Baltimore or met us in a bar after games and introduced yourselves by your message board handle, that would help.

In Richmond, I became friendly with some VCU, Drexel, Mason fans from the old CAAZone the first few years in the league.

Yes, there is Dieharddogs. It's kind of expensive, and there isn't a whole lot of activity. I would make a guess that it's because it costs money but who knows.

I like this place since there are multiple teams that have active boards that I can check in on. Wish some NU fans would join me (and geewiz) here.

I took like 2 and a half weeks for my membership to be approved here, so if anyone tries to join, you might have a bit of a wait.

Maybe a lot of paid members, but less posting in all sports combined than either of the JMU, UNCW, and W&M basketball boards here.

C'mon man its NOT expensive.

I like conversing with other fans, as long as there's limited smack talk. I'd rather focus on the games and the players on the field or court.

Nothing arks me more though when some fan who has no connection or inkling of NU athletics whatsoever, makes false, clueless comments.

When in this day and age, all they needed to do was google or go on our athletic site to get the real info.

C'mon man, we're not Michigan State or Notre Dame here. Getting charged for a small message board is a big turn off. It's not expensive in the grand scheme of things but I think it would be hard to find other college athletics programs with as little success and fanfare as we have charging for message boards.

I agree with the smack talk/clueless statements but so far from what I've seen here, everyone is pretty cool, and I like that fans of other schools will check in at different boards to chip in or ask questions.

Michigan State and Notre Dame's Rivals message board is a PAID subscription. That's their main one.

Look we had this conversation on the 'Zone years ago, when you cried poverty about the cost.

And now you're still complaining about the price.

You're the one inexplicably "turned off" by it. I know of no other NU student or alum who has.

I didn't mean for this to turn into an argument about dieharddogs. This will be the last I say about it (a separate thread about DHD is probably better if we want). DHD is a great community with good insight and passionate fans. I just know many more people who haven't joined because of the price than people who have. I never cried poverty in the past, so you probably mistake me for someone else.

I hope everyone in the Northeastern family has a great new year and wish all our sports teams a successful 2016.

RE: Long weekend in NC - Beginning of Conference play
UNCW has opened as 3.5 favorites and the line has moved to 5 points as of now. Looks like there is a lot of confidence in this UNCW team. I also think NU's poor away form this season (other than Miami FL) is playing a factor in that. We'l see if the line moves right before tip off.

We will need to rebound well, and get to the foul line this game. We do that and we will have a good chance to win. Hoping Miller has a big game. He looks better and better each week, just needs to put it together for a whole game.

Halftime. Up by 5.

I think we are a bit fortunate. Our offense looks uncontrolled and wild at times. We also can't rebound. Missing Stahl is a big factor in both these things. We are going to need walker and ford to shoot well I the 2nd half to win this game

Happy to see the win. I was not able to watch or follow the 2nd half. Great start to the conference season! 2-0 coming home to Beantown :)
