Yeah, like Satterfield was some huge name lol.

I know, right? I mean, he only brought in the offense at App that enabled us to beat Michigan and dominate the Southern Conference for a decade.

I think you missed his point....

Well Satterfield went from QB/OC at App, winning 3 NC games, to the QB coach at Toledo in 2009. The improved from 3-9 to 5-7 his year there. Then became the OC at FIU for 2 years and posted two winning seasons, making it in two bowls with a Bowl win.

Not exactly a bad resume.

yeah, but he certainly wasn't a big name. I'll take any defensive coordinator who led a defense to being a top 10 team in the country and a new years day bowl win over baylor. His resume isn't too shabby either. besides, him being from the area coaching in ga and florida makes him a good pickup for recruiting as well.

I don't believe I missed it as the only implication he made was in no way comparable.

you said Summers is a no name. Satterfield wasn't any more of a household name than Satterfield. That was the point.

Well, pretty much none of the coaches in our conference are household names.

exactly. that's the point. So the post acting as if Summers may fail because he is a no name coach, is kind of dumb. We all go after coaches that most haven't heard of. Doesn't mean they are any better than others.

RE: Georgia Southern hires Tyson Summers as head coach
Very true. I think some App fans are looking at this from a different angle. We knew Satterfield and/or Elliot would be HC one day. Him and Shawn Elliot both left App to take position then coordinator gigs at FBS schools to get the needed experience to come back and take over. Moore encouraged both of them to do so. And once SS came back to be Assistant HC the writing was on the wall. We were familiar with him so it seemed like a home run "named" hire. These same people probably look at Summers and think "Who?" and don't grasp that he probably had the same plans and attitude the admin was looking for.

yeah. he was also on our staff a few years ago too, so he is familiar with our program, and he also knows how not to handle being a head coach at Ga southern. I think that year was a very valuable lesson for him on what not to do as a head coach anywhere. lol.

it's all good.04-cheers
he wasn't a coordinator at the time, but I think the familiarity with our school, the area, and what happens when you try to change to much (he was under the staff of he who shall not be named). From what I've seen his players really respect and like him, and he was thought of very highly while at UCF and after he left.

To me, it is one of those hires that may seem out of left field to most, but it makes sense. Supposedly he was on the list of potential defensive coordinators for UGA.

Not exactly a bad resume.

NC nailed it.

I wasn't trying to imply that Satt had a bad resume or anything. I was just saying that he wasn't a big name when he was hired, either.

Given some more time to process this hire I sort of get it. Summers' youth and South Georgia ties might mean he stays longer than two seasons if he's successful. If you can't hire the big name coach, then at least get someone who can recruit. Recruiting seems to be Summers speciality. Our defense was pretty good this past season, maybe Summers can improve upon it. He said he's keeping the option. If you play good defense and run the option with Ellison, Breida, Fields, and Ramsby; that's a recipe for at least 8 wins. It's really hard to mess that up. Can't wait to see how he fills out the coaching staff. I think Dell McGee gets the call at OC.

This, lawd if you get a big name coach its probably some really old dude like Solich.

Dont like the hire off the bat. I was not big on hiring a DC with P5 experience now we got one with only two years of G5 experience. I just dont get hiring a coordinator over proven winner HC's that have already been coordinators but to each his own.

The OC he hires will be the most crucial part of all this. I would think TK knew who the likely OC was going to be before the ink was dry. I also dont know why we don't know who it is yet. I would hate to think we did some overnight hire and now scrambling to fill out the rest of the coaches. If this does not work out this is the kind of hire an AD has nothing to fall back on the justification for the hire. His resume is relatively short no P5 experience and no HC experience. Hope he does not pull a VanGorder but as of now this is a dice roll hire until we find out who the OC is.

Relatively short p5 experience and no head coaching experience... Kind of like when we hired monken or Paul Johnson?

I hope you're right. I hear that UGA is showing strong interest in Dell as their RB coach

As long as pride doesn't play a role in this, I would think that logically Asst Head coach/co-offensive coordinator at GS would progress his career quicker than RB coach/recruiter at UGA
