Camellia Bowl APP V OHIO Game Thread 4:30pm CT ESPN
Should be a good game as both teams are solid on both sides of the ball with strong run games and disciplined defenses.

Sell out crowd is expected and App has been buying tickets on the Ohio side as well.

Two days from now Montgomery will be black and gold.

App will not get its RT Nunn back for this game unfortunately to go along with two key WRs that will be out. Our LT and best DT are listed as questionable and backup RT day-to-day, but I expect them to play.

Special teams could be the difference in this game.

If App has their center back I hear they can beat anyone.

I fully expect the questionably and day-to-day guys will play. The only O-lineman that will be out is Nunn and he's been out for almost half a season.

They only trailed in one game while he was healthy, thanks for noticing.

Try and stay on topic though.

Even with a number of offensive players out, I expect our defense to contain Ohio's offense enough for us to play ground and pound.

If we break 350 yards on ground with positive turnover margin, we win.

That could be said for every team in America.

EXCEPT, APP STATE consistently does 350 yards on the ground with low turnovers

Oh and of note this Saturday our basketball team plays UNCC in Boone. I know we all will be more interested in the football game in Montgomery, but if we do win the hoops contest the Whiner fans will likely have the meltdown of the century.

Let's go 2-0 on Saturday!

App's strength on offense is the run and Ohio is strong against the run defense. Its a very physical team.

Ohio's HC is something like 48-1 when leading at the half. They like to get out early on teams and stay in control.

Last time Ohio played a Bowl against the SBC it won by 30+ points. Its also 9-0 since 2010 against the SBC (2x Louisiana, 1x ULM, 2x UNT, 2x Idaho, 2x NMSU).

In regards to Ohio's run defense, I've been hearing the exact opposite. I've heard they were not good at all. But that is just what I've heard and not what I've seen or researched, so I'll leave it at that.

That is completely wrong. Ohio's strength is defense and the program has put many players on that side of the ball into the NFL. The secondary plays Man 2 Man with loads of experience and talent. The team shut out Kent State 27-0, its first MAC shutout in 10 years. This year it's one of the best defenses of Solich's tenure. It allows the lowest 3rd down conversion percentage in the MAC.

Offensively, Ohio has talent but the play calling is hit or miss. One of the backs Irons is supposed to be a lock for the NFL draft but can't see the field behind the other talent. WR's are above average for the MAC and Ohio has a TE graduate transfer from Michigan that is pretty good. QB's are experienced with 1 5th year senior and 2 4th year Juniors. They aren't next level QB's but they don't make a lot of mistakes.

Special teams is typically strong at Ohio, especially in returns and punts. Ohio rarely shoots itself in the foot with poor special teams play.

Two obvious questions:

How will NFL alumni contribute to your defensive effort against the Apps?

How do you expect a player to make a league roster when he can't even start on a MAC team?

-We have as many NFL prospects as ever. This is for a program that his been a the top of the MAC sending guys to the league over the past decade.

-Irons had offers from a couple of PAC programs like Washington and Oregon State. He set every high school rushing record in British Columbia and he's a physical specimen.

Solich is only likes to play upper classmen and this guy is only a red shirt freshman. That is how our program works; a lot of 4th and 5th year guys getting the playing time.
