Pathetic-Too Many Bowls
Its bad enough 6-6 teams have been bowling over the years, now the bowls are putting losing football teams Nebraska and Minnesota at 5-7 into bowl games.
Its all about putting fannies ($$$$) into seats! And how does the Aloha bowl stay operating. I can picture maybe 8000 people going to that game and that is being generous.[/b]

RE: Pathetic-Too Many Bowls
yep.... the 5-7 San Jose State game is a knee slapper.
Akron is probably the only MAC team that should be at home. They still won 7 games though.
I would be okay with 4 tie ins, and 5 or 6 bowl games with no tie ins that could real in G5 conference champs for some decent matchups.
35 bowls for 70 teams is ideal, IMO. Scrap the Potato, Cure, Camelia, and some others with historically poor attendance figures or repeat stadium games.

The locals support the Aloha Bowl pretty well, esp if Hawaii is playing in the game. I was actually at the game 5 years ago (Hawaii vs Tulsa). Aloha Stadium was pretty full and good tailgating.

What has been the attendance when Hawaii isn't competing, not very well.

I say limit it to 30 bowls, and no more than ~7 teams/conference. And all 8 win teams must be selected before 7 win teams, and 7 win teams before 6 win teams. I know this won't happen, but it is what I would love to see.
Get rid of the St Pete and Miami bowls (Why play games on baseball fields?), Cure Bowl, Montgomery Bowl, Arizona Bowl, and some others.

It's on ASN, so about 25 people will be able to see it on an actual TV broadcast with their limited distribution rights. Since the Arizona Bowl could not find a real media partner, they spun it to say that they will be making it a digitally-focused broadcast. If you enjoy torture, you can watch it on this website if the hamsters are spinning the wheels fast enough.

You want them to cut the number of bowl games? I remember a few years back we didn't get picked for a bowl game . Nobody was happy about that. So if they cut the bowl games? How many of you would be happy when we don't get picked again?

Agree, another opportunity to play and more practice. Opportunity for those who can get time off and can travel to see another game.

So 5-7 teams are going bowling...teams from the same conference are playing each other in bowls...and some bowl games aren't even going to be nationally televised...something's gotta give.

Once sponsors stop supporting bowls that are not filling up the stadiums with at least 70% capacity, they will died a slow death.

Attendance has not been good at many bowl games. The attendance figures are skewed by the guaranteed number each school and conference must buy and the tickets given to the corporate sponsor.
TV and gambling are not only keeping the bowls alive, but also growing them. I'll never forget the UT/Utah State game in the Boise Bowl on a random Saturday afternoon went head-to-head with a huge college basketball double header that featured three ranked teams. Neither UT nor USU has a draw, even regionally, but the ratings for the bowl game on ESPN were more than double the basketball games on CBS.
Bowl games are like the NFL in that they're easy to gamble (legally and illegally) on. I don't do daily fantasy, but I can't wait to see all the games those sites have prepared for the bowl games and how it impacts the popularity of the bowl games.

RE: Pathetic-Too Many Bowls
its not that there are too many bowls, its that the P5 has too many guaranteed bowl spots. Most of the bowls added in recent years are for G5 teams. It wasn't long ago when the MAC had 13 teams but only 3 bowl tie ins. Compare that to the P5 bowl tie ins-
ACC- 9 for 14 teams
BigXII- 7 for 10 teams
B1G- 8 for 14 teams
Pac12- 7 for 12
SEC- 10 for 14 teams
That's 41 guaranteed bowl spots for 64 teams. Does the 10th best team in the SEC really deserve a guaranteed bowl spot?

Who would the bowl sponsors rather have, the 10th place SEC team or the 3rd or 4th place MAC team? I agree with you that it doesn't seem right but that's life in the mid-majors.

A 6-6 SEC team definitely deserves a spot over a 6-6 MAC team.

Hb 6-6 Illinois with no .500 wins and Toledo at home with 7 wins, 4 over bowl teams, and 3 losses to 10 win teams?
Those bottom spots for P5 kill contenders in G5 conferences with tough OOC schedules. If that 6-6 SEC team has 2 SEC wins over Vandy and Kentucky, then swept OOC vs Syracuse, Tulane, FIU and FCS what would you think???

disagree 1000%. A 6-6 SEC likely scheduled 4 OOC games vs competition that they can out spend by 50X, including buying them out for a home only matchup. Not to mention within the conference there is a large disparity from top to bottom in terms of financial resources.
By comparison, a MAC team will play no more than 1 program all season that they have a financial advantage over, in or out of conference. MAC schools earn their wins more than SEC schools. 6-6 in the MAC is much more impressive than 6-6 in the SEC.
