It would be nice, however, to reel in some high rated recruits on an occasional basis. I know we've sustained incredible success with blue-colar, low ranked recruits, but why settle? No one on this board knows what kind of success we could potentially have high rated HS/JUCO recruits. Maybe some don't pan out, but I've seen plenty of high rated recruits pan out (see Alabama, OSU, Iowa, FSU, Clemson). Hell, even in the MAC high rated recruits perform at a high level. Lets look at the MAC 2015 Speciality award winners and their recruiting ranking.
Freshman of the Year: Jamari Bogan (3*), Offers: Georgia Tech, Temple, Toledo
Offense Player of the year: Matt Johnson (3*), Offers: Temple,
Defensive Player of the year: Jatavious Brown (2*), Offers: Georgia State, Marshall
ST player of the Year: Aregeros Turner (3*), Offers: Tennessee, Kentucky, Washington, Illinois, Purdue
A common theme: ALL but one were 3 stars and held multiple offers. In order for NIU to take our program to the next level, it begins with recruiting. We can pound on MAC teams all we want, but until we beat P5 programs regularly (see Boise), we will not garner national recognition. Big games count! FSU, Iowa, Arkansas, Marshall, tOSU, BC, BGSU(!!!!) are games we need to consistently win. I don't understand where the board's complacency comes from, why settle with keeping games close when we have the resources and tradition to go out and recruit STUDS. Yes diamonds in the rough are nice, but highly regarded recruits have the talent to come in right away and play! Turner, Huff, Dj Brown, Mayomi Olootu, Renard Cheren, Albert Smalls, Ruben Dunbar are those players I am talking about.
Do you have any fact that any of those players were highly recruited other than Dunbar and Turner? Olootu was a 2 star that was changed to 3 star when he got a late offer from Boise. I believe he had one or two other offers. Cheren had two offers other than NIU, neither program is in NIUs league, also two stars on rivals and was not ranked on ESPN. Smalls, wasn't ranked by ESPN, two stars on rivals, one offer (NIU). Huff was not ranked by ESPN, two stars by rivals. Lots of offers from rivals but only NC State and NIU from ESPN. DJ Brown unranked by ESPN, three stars from rivals, mostly NIU caliber offers. Turner and Dunbar are the only big name recruits.
Please tell us again all the facts you have backing up your argument. No team is 5 deep at QB. See Baylor
Let's see.
Mayomi Olootu (3 Star)
- Offers: BOISE, NMSU
Jordan Huff (3 Star)
- Offers: Duke, Ark. State, LT, Minnesota, NC State, S Alabama
Dj Brown (3 Star)
- Offers: Illinois, Memphis, Ark State, Southern Miss
Albert Smalls (2 Star)
- Offers: Marshall, Akron, FAU, WKU, FAU
Renard Cheren (2 Star)
- Offers: FIU, MTSU, App State, FAU
All According to 247 sports and Rivals. There are my facts, buddy.
