RE: Raleigh Springs Mall original stores - can you name them
If memory serves, I think there was a barber shop on the right side just as you entered the main entrance, and an eyeglass store next to it. Also no one has mentioned the 12 screen Malco theatre. And the C&I Bank out near the main drive entrance. Hallmark greeting card store, and a book store? Both just to the right of Goldsmith's entrance. Back in the early part of the 20th Century there was a trolly line that went from the springs in Raleigh to downtown Memphis. Down Austin Peay/Jackson to National to Summer to downtown. I once lived in the McGee house on McGee Cove. It was a hunting lodge in the 1800s and they turned it into their home when the lodge folded. It was the second oldest building in Raleigh other than the library. Both are still there.

The 12 screen theater was not an original place. The two screen General Cinema was. He was asking about the original stores of the mall when it opened.

I thought the Milano's that was in Oak Court Mall was the first. He sold it, moved back to Italy for a bit, then came back and opened a new store out east near Wolfchase Mall.

worked at the Walgreen's there for several years. I was most likely the guy you were buying your beer from when you were under 18! never asked for ID's back in the day. that was back in 78-80.

Walgreens had a grill as well. would sneak over there and grab a quick bite or hang out at Shoney's as well. I feel sorry if you ever pissed off the folks at Shoney's. I know what they would do to some folks food before they severed it to you.

on a related note, I was watching the news and saw that MPD had caught car thieves at "southland" mall. In all my years of living here I had no idea that southland mall existed.

Southland Mall was the first mall in this area.

Before I left Memphis in 2002, I was thinking that Raleigh Springs Mall had found its niche. The JCPenney and Dillard's had both become outlet stores. Though not outlets, Goldsmith's seemed to be doing OK as well as Sears. Shows how little business prediction savvy I have.

I was hoping the Wal-Mart plan would come to fruition for RSM ... I suppose they placed a SuperCenter instead at the old one on Covington Pike & Austin Peay?

I guess I was in both places. Started out not far from Southland and moved to Raleigh before it was city and before the mall. Covington Pike was a winding 2 lane road then and I hunted and fished all around the area. I remember there was a country grocery out Covington Pike that would sell beer to anyone. I rode my bike there once and peddled away with a 6'er of Schlitz. 03-puke

There was also the Hickory Farms store as well, down towards Sears.

I think the toy store was named circus world. that was in the early 80s, so I don't know if it was one of the original stores.

That rings a bell...I remember Children's Palace in the mid 80's across the street from the mall for sure.

Yep. Along with service merchandise and Dowdle.

I LOOOOVED Service Merchandise.
They were across Yale from the mall, though, as where Children's Palace was across Austin Peay.

Along with Service Merchandise & Dowdle's, there was also Raiford's Shoes that had a big tree in the middle of the store for kids to climb, and Britling's Cafeteria down on the far end.

I couldn't tell you what I did this time last week, but for some reason I have all this minutiae burned in my brain.

I bought my wife's engagement ring and wedding band from Service....on layaway. lol She still has it on her finger so I guess that purchase was ok. Man, this thread is bringing back some old memories. What a time and place that was.

Did anyone already mention Spencers Gifts. I killed so much time in there as a kid. Lava lamps and fake poo
