How in the world does a coach recruit with a 2 year deal?

So Urbana is such a mess they're going to put off hiring a permanent coach until at least next year. Interesting.

He'll have to try selling the university, and not himself. And maybe say, "In two years you'll be playing for a coach with a much higher salary than me."

It makes no sense to give him a 2 year contract. None. The stupidity of that decision cannot be understated.

RE: Cubit
...Who gave him the deal? Who will fire him in a year? Illinois needs to put somebody in charge. Anybody.
I bet he just announced the deal himself. Since there's nobody to stop him.

It seems as though the Illinois athletics department isn't even trying to make a good decision. Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen so many bad decisions in a row.

Yes and no.
The type of person they want (and the type they need) probably isn't going to be interested in being hired by an interim AD with an interim chancellor. What the ILL-ness need to do is get those positions filled first. Let Cubit and his staff work at maintaining relationships, restoring others, and letting the black eye heal. IF (big IF) Cubit pulls off a miracle, you'll have made a turnaround on the cheap; if not, you'd be giving the chancellor and the new AD an opportunity to work together toward getting a quality coach. Personally, don't care if the Orange and Boo-Hoos keep floundering, but the move makes some sense financially and in terms of a football hire, logical because most anyone who could do the job isn't going to be interested in having bosses who didn't hire him judging his ability.

You could have given him a 4-year deal with very small buyouts for years 2, 3, and 4. He would have taken it, and it wouldn't have nuked the recruiting effort. The issue isn't keeping Cubit (which I wouldn't have, but they didn't ask me), it's that a 2-year contract is the worst way to go about that.
My guess is they'll hire a permanent AD eventually, go like 5-7 next year, and they'll be done with Cubit. Still, that's a lost year of recruiting that the new guy will have to overcome.
I get what they did, but they've kind of sabotaged Cubit without doing so intentionally and with there being another alternative that would have made his life easier and possibly help maintain some level of a decent roster.

Shows you how little sway both sides have. Cubit knows nobody really wants him as the head man.....Illinois knows they aren't attractive right now. This is time wasting....at least Cubit is respectable.

In the long run it's probably going to be more damaging than just time-wasting. Coupled with the quotes from the interim AD on the decision, the fanbase is on the verge of completely quitting. It's absolutely furious and disgusted.

It's really bad to hire subordinates before a boss. The whole AD is such a shambles....Illinois is lost right now
