Either would literally be rays of sunshine over Moo.
No doubt, but Danny boy has it pretty good. He makes $4M in a town who claims McDonalds has the best hamburger. He can schedule 4 C-USA teams, beat Kentucky and some other patsy from the east and focus on his national championship around Thanksgiving. have 1 or 2 more games go your way and boom...8 wins.
If he goes 6-6 and beats Ole Miss every year, they'll give him a lifetime contract and build a statue for him. Mix in a 7-8 win season every 3 years and he's golden
So essentially you think he has the same expectations as they do with the bear sharks. Either Mississippi school is thrilled with the occasional upset, beating the other, and if the national press is ever fooled into thinking a decent team is great, they get extra SEC national accolades.
Thumper should run when he gets the chance....but...he will have fewer options.
Yep. Both have it pretty good...I wouldn't leave, though expectations are lower at State making that an easier gig IMO.

65k stadium that is has sold out consistently for 2 decades, 6 conference titles over the past 12 seasons, 22 straight bowl games, a very easy going fanbase compared to other big programs, big $$$ conference.
VaTech has a lot to sell.

Easy to sell out ONLY tix in town.....Barnum & Bailey are ONLY once a year.....& right now, we are 1000k X's more popular;appealing;bowl-eligibility; media spotlighted; than VT has had in the last 10 years combined. .....That place is a black whole as there isn't much upside.....Poor decision, if so, he will be forgotten in 5 years

Just hope we have the same group that hired Fuente make our next hire. I'll be ok.

If we had gotten into the Big 12 last week, Fuente would still probably leave for Virginia Tech.

RE: Missouri Ath. Director: "Justin Fuente is off the table"
Virginia Tech is not Alabama or Southern Cal, but it is a really good job, and is clearly better than Memphis.
Mostly identified with Beamer, even before Beamer they had some success. Few bowl games as there were fewer games to play in, but had a lot of solid seasons, as well as Bruce a Smith, NFL number one draft pick.
Beautiful area, beautiful campus...and while it is a college town, it has more of a cosmopolitan feel than would be predicted...due in large part to big numbers of DC area kids. Absent additional contacts to Memphis, like many of us have personally, it is simply a no brainier should that option be available.
No perceived baggage there either.

We're more popular than Virginia Tech? That idea is degronkulous and the rest of the stuff in your post is just nonsense.
VaTech's football program is light-years ahead of ours, that's just being real.

What are you measuring with....VT is almost 3rd in the state of VA football now .....The upside & potential of Memphis compared to Tech is HUGE! We couldn't beat anyone, period, prior to Fuente getting here and look what he was able to do. He took one of, if not the, worst football programs in the country and rebuilt it. If he can do that here, he should be able to have success at VT. Being in the Coastal division of the ACC, he should have a good shot at getting to the CCG most years.

There's a HUGE difference in that this area is immense with talent that's overlooked. ...as most rely on r8ings for talent and aren't much for understanding what type player they are looking for, as well as, how to DEVELOP said talent, or get the most out of the players natural abilities. This is what Fu seems to be a master of and that trait works well, extremely well for this area. Will it work for Tech? Dunno, but the variables are NOT so easily mimicked

RE: Missouri Ath. Director: "Justin Fuente is off the table"
Appeared to me Fuente checked out a few games ago and I brought it up here to much ridicule. There will be assistants accompanying him and they are in the loop. WEhether the decision is made public or not those players who work closely with position coaches etc. can perceive when change is in the air, hence the teams deflation. Paxton Lynch has been told (bottom line) not to get hurt and Fuente not to put him in a position to get hurt hence our team has a lame duck staff, a QB who is waiting on NFL $ and a team that that has been abandoned midseason by its coaches and a fan bas that doesn't want to believe it all, somehow hoping Fuente will stay here.
I hope he stays here too, but the decision has been made. Feel free to criticize my opinions/perceptions but come back after it all plays out and man up. I hope I'm wrong but I know what my senses tell me. Fuente couldn't leave VaTech "on hold" for long while he thinks things over, neither would he fail to prepare his most trusted staff. He is committed elsewhere, but it is evidently not here or things would be playing out differently. Fuente wasnt exactly treated like gold early in his tenure here and I've brought up the criticisms particularly of his decisions to play Lynch and name him starter 1month before his freshman season.
I saw first hand how his family was treated on Tiger lane during this time. They were not exactly embraced and now, well I'm not sure where they even go for pregames but it isnt their TL spot. You never get a second chance to make a first impression. No one knew how the whole Paxton Lynch decision would turn out but it is obvious Fuente was correct and our fans who criticized this decision were wrong, unfortunately vociferously so. Even if you toss all this you cannot blame Fuente for taking the VaTech job. I am grateful for his time here.
He will be very successful at VPI as he would be here if he stayed. Thew question is can he be successful enough there? The bar is set pretty high. Most coaches don't care about a legacy, if so Cal would still be the basketball coach here, changing all the injustices he saw and elucidated so well that resonated with every Tiger fan that knows the battles we've faced. Fuente could stay here and be a legend, but he will likely follow the course Calipari chose, although I would be surprised if he left in the same manner. I'm sure our power players are already aware of all this and know Fuentes decision is made. we wanted to announce he was staying a week or two ago and could not. There can only be one reason why.
who the new coach is, well, I have no idea. Time to check out flight aware and crystal balls if your into that sort of thing.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I am very thankful for the Fuente era, hopefully our next coach can build on it. At this point Vatech would have to rescind their offer and it may already be signed and sealed.

I wasnt aware of any mistreatment on TL, but due to youth sports commitments, this is the first season that I've really been able to attend many pregame activities. While I was not overly critical of the Karam/Lynch decision at the time, I did think there were times that Karam could have been inserted (when Lynch really struggled) that could have led to another win or two. My thought was that the add'l wins may have helped recruiting at the time, as dropping from 4 wins to 3 wins from year 1 to 2 could have been seen as regression. It probably wouldnt have made much of a difference. We will never know for sure, but I did trust Fuente to do he right thing and only wondered about his decision without condemning it.
Anyway, it is what it is and I cant blame him for leaving for VT, although I reserve the right to question how he season has fallen off and the impact that his decision has had on that. You know, it always seems that when we are on the crusp of something big, something happens - see Pancoast, Dockery, Dempsey, Bailey (thanks, Edmond), Stobart, Fuente - thus, the BFS that many of us possess.
