That's really not too much of an upset at all.

That's a much bigger upset than many realize. George Mason has been a dumpster fire of a program since they joined the A-10. This year, they're the proud owners of a blowout home loss to Colgate.

Roanoke is D3, and it was an exhibition game for them (but counts for A&T). This might be the winner for the season's biggest laugher.

Richmond 91
Wake 82

Akron 88
Arkansas 80

Akron is a decent program. I wouldn't call that much of an upset.

No disagreement here, other than it being AAC over B1G.

What is with Arkansas losing to the MAC teams this year? Arkansas football lost to Toledo, and now their basketball team lost to Akron.

Maybe Arkansas should leave the SEC and join CUSA...David can you whip up a new realignment scenario for us? 04-cheers

This isn't football. Of those two conferences, the most accomplished program resides in the AAC. 07-coffee3

The Big Ten might be expected to get more bids, but they are both multi-bid conferences, and obviously the American has the more recent national champions. And in the BTN pre-season expectations, Minnesota was 12th of 14.

On that pre-season poll of Big Ten beat writers, the Big Ten expectations are
tier 1. Maryland
tier 2. Indiana, Purdue, MSU, Wisconsin
tier 3. That School Up North
tier 4. OSU, Illinois, Iowa, Northwestern
tier 5. Nebraska, Minnesota, Penn State
tier 6. Rutgers

So unless they prove the doubters wrong, Minnesota would be expected to lose fairly frequently to the better programs from other multi-bid conferences.

Ok St was picked to finish 7th out of 10 in the Big 12 preseason poll. George Mason was picked to finish 13th out of 14 in the A-10 preseason poll.

Talk about a school that hasn't taken advantage of its publicity and achievements. GMU is lucky they moved up to the A-10.

RE: This Week In Hoops Schadenfreude - Week of 11/16
The way the conference play inflicts havoc on the RPI, where all in major conferences can see a lift from the good work of others by just playing them, and especially winning some here or there, GMU is picking up gold for the A10.

The opposite is true in the bad conferences, where RPI is demolished because of the schedule, even if you win, but especially if you don't. This was Gonzaga's plight for so long. This is what sets apart majors from high middies to just the rest. GMU might be in for a hurting in the A10, but the conference is padded by these wins, and maybe VCU is worlds apart numbers-wise from someone down the road, like ODU, even if both teams are decent. ODU will be haunted by what the bottom of its division couldn't do that VCU's did.

They were pretty good after their FF, but when Larranaga left and Hewitt came in, they fell into mediocrity.

The way it is going, the P5 schools would have lost a game before December.

There is minimal difference between the majors and everyone else except the HBCU's and obscure leagues like the NEC and Big South. The only schools with an inherent advantage is the most rabid schools like Duke, Indiana, Kentucky, UCLA and UNC (to name a few), which all demand great teams at all costs.

RE: This Week In Hoops Schadenfreude - Week of 11/16
It wasn't a good night for the Big Ten. Michigan State, as usual, makes it look easy. Maryland was trailing Rider by two at the half, and Northwestern needed overtime to best Columbia.

In the battle of preseason #11's:
Duquesne 78
Penn St. 52
Only "upset" aspect of it is that, by season's end, compare how many bids the B1G gets to what A10 does. A10 would be lucky to get even half most seasons.

I think this is Chambers' last year. Duquesne started showing up regularly on the schedule again because the last loser coach kept dodging that other big school in the city. It's supposed to be an easy one. Well, someone made it look easy.

Hofstra 82
Florida St. 77
