Quit blaming the defense
They were not responsible for the loss. For the last two games the offense has done a disappearing act midway through the second half. This game we had a period where the defense did not get off the field and sat down before they were right back on the field. Started with a two play drive which ended up in a fumble. Then after the defense held on downs and held Houston out of the end zone. The offense comes back out with another 2 play drive that ended up in an interception. The defense tried but back to back turnover led to a TD. Then they get back on the bench and the offense comes right back with a three and out.

How could you blame any defense who spent most of the second half on the field? All the offense had to do is to get one more first down in any of those three series and we win.

Houston averages 525 yards per game and the defense held them to less than 400. Houston averages 275 yards rushing and the defense held them to less than 100.

The defense did it's job when they were able to get off the field and rest.

A pass rush would be nice.

RE: Quit blaming the defense
How can you not place some of the blame on the defense when their backup QB comes in and look like Tom Brady? There were wide open receivers and missed assignments all over the field in the second half.

I agree the offense missed some golden opportunities in crunch time but the defense looked totally defenseless against the pass.

RE: Quit blaming the defense
Before last night defensive debacle,
the defense was
96th out of 127 in total defense.
84th out of 127 in scoring defense.
117th out of 127 in passing defense.

Get real. This defense is not organized. How can u rush 3, and wind up with receivers getting behind us on 1/1 deep matchup's with no safety help? When you do not know what you are doing. It is Pastnereqsc.

If I were an opposing team, I would throw at least one long bomb every series - and I'd have probably about a 60% chance of completing it.

I'm not faulting the defensive players, per se - they probably did as well as they could. We just don't have the talent needed on defense to compete with good teams. Our offense has been able to overcome this in many games but it's starting to catch up with us.

34 points is good enough to beat anyone. The offense did choke at the end but you gotta make stops. The offense pretty much became the defense because our D couldn't make stops. That's why the offense went conservative trying to milk the clock instead of playing our game. Offense sells tickets, defense wins games.

Our defense is our #1 weakness, we all knew that to start the season. This is where our payroll is stretched Fuente bashers are A. Trolls B. Delusional C. Ignoranuses D. All of the above.

Yeah, the offense who turns the ball over twice in their on territory is not to blame at all, and one of them the D stops, and the offense can't make a drive because we were too busy offensively calling the game to not lose instead.

There is a little blame on every front.

Good point. It was obvious we were trying to keep our defense off the field. Giving up 21 points in the fourth quarter is ridiculous. It could have been 28 if not for that phantom call.

I haven't seen anyone bashing Fuente. Are people questioning some of his play calling last night? Yes. Are some questioning why he didn't do a better job of addressing the losses on defense after last season...including the DC? Yes. Neither of those would I consider to be bashing the coach.

From 2 minutes to go in the first half and the 2nd half we gave up 35 points to a QB whose only D1 experience was a couple of series in a mop up role.

Please....

Our defense absolutely blows and lost us this game. It isn't the players either. It is the dang DC. Blaming this loss on Lynch is by far the dumbest thing ever said on this board.

^This^

I saw a couple of gift wrapped interceptions that my 10 yr old could have caught and a couple of absolutely atrocious deep ball coverages. Other than that, the defense was probably enough. Our secondary issues are part scheme and part player abilities. Very low football IQ on defense. We could easily be 6-4 right now due to our defense.

People blaming the offense; if we make those two routine interceptions and don't give up those two deep balls, we likely have an insurmountable lead even with our turnovers.

Here's an idea: maybe both units share responsibility for the loss. This board has lost it's mind.

Not to those who do not have their heads up his anus. No defense can spend almost 11 minutes out of 15 minute quarter on the field and not get worn out.

You do realize your post also described Ward prior to our game with them last year. And what did he do in that game? We game planned well for Ward's strength, but the back up was strong enough to get away from the rush when we had a hand on him and didn't go down. Losing Hunter also did not help with keeping fresh players in late in the game.

I think there's merit in both positions. The defense is poor, but to make matters worse they were forced to stay on the field for a long time in that 4th Qtr. with the TOs and 3-and-out.
