I'm sure traffic in the area is going to be a pain with the added security.

Anyone else going?

You couldn't pay me $1,000 to be anywhere near that circus to watch a clown present the 3-card monte.

76° and partly sunny today. 67° with showers Tuesday. That pretty much sums up the change in climate. Now how about a discussion of American foreign policy and its' recent successes?

I doubt he is coming all this way for a 5 minute speech.

Science tells us that at one time 1/3 of North America was covered in glaciers and ice. Over thousands of years that ice melted without benefit of coal fired power plants, SUVs or any of the other bugbears that are presented to us today. Yet we are to use 150 years or less of weather and climate data to assume that man has overwhelmed natural forces.

And I'm out before the ban hammer appears.

Per my chosen signature ...

You can't spell John Kerry without j, e, r, & k.

I'd actually be interested in seeing this, too bad I'm not a student anymore.

I will say, for most if not all of the engineering students at ODU, there really isn't an 'if' with climate change, just a 'when will we see traumatic and irreversible change?' Debate was more or less 'Does this affect us, or the next generation', those were good debates though.

Wow, this became a fun thread.

Odds are he is going to talk about how Norfolk, VA Beach etc... are expected to be under water as early as 2050, more likely 2100.

That makes sense. Hopefully they can record the presentation. I'm sure that students/faculty will come out in strong numbers to see the Secretary of State.

I'd be much more interested if it was Tea Leoni.

I don't think the timing of this discussion is a coincidence what with the recent death of Keystone XL. ODU is the leading university in terms of the study of sea level rise, and was chosen as an appropriate setting. I'm sure Hampton Road's situation will be mentioned, but I don't believe it is the reason for the visit.

I'm going. Sea level rise is pretty much the most important long term issue that Norfolk faces and ODU has some **** hot people across a few departments leading the charge. It's good that the university is taking note because it's an opportunity for ODU to be genuinely world class at something, and that kind of prestige isn't going to be attained in most academic areas here.

About 4 or 5 months ago there was a meeting at the Nauticus. It was mainly for the folks involved with the Offshore wind farms. The guest speaker (Retired General now working for a think-tank) talked at length about different types of energy production and threat the sea level rise is regarding the Norfolk Navy Base.

Even if politicians and the general population is not taking this issue seriously, the military sure as hell is. The whole meeting was fascinating.

It would have been very interesting to see how support / protests would have shaped out had the Keystone XL just ran adjacent to one of the many existing pipelines.
