I don't get what's so difficult for you on this.

He and some other people (who shall remain nameless) are praying that we don't get Turner Field because they somehow see us getting our own stadium as a threat. Nevermind the fact that all bids for the property are due at the end of this month and no one else has come forward with a plan for the property but GSU. Nevermind the fact that the Mayor has said publicly on MULTIPLE occasions that he thinks GSU is the best fit. Nevermind the fact that we have gone public with our 300 million dollar campaign out of which 200 million has already been raised. They don't see because they don't want to see.

It's worse than that. What if there is only one bid? :)

The Governor has a bromance with the Mayor

The Lieutenant Governor has three sons that either currently or in the recent past played and or coached at GSU

The Chancellor of the BOR is a GSU grad.

Not threatened by anything you guys do athletically or academically. No reason to be.

I can only speak for myself not all Eagle fans, but I hope you guys DO get a stadium, I think it will be better for your long term success and by extension that of the conference. My only reasons for continually clicking on this thread (03-banghead) are a general interest in big Real Estate development deals, and how BOR/State decisions regarding this can affect funding for GS projects in the future.

Well. We all will know in 16 days or so. 2 weeks from today the bids end. I figure the AJC will put in an open records inquiry and 48 or 72 hours later... Voila!

I know right. The casino in Murphy is a ton easier for me too. But anyway.

(11-06-2015 10:44 AM)StanMolsonMan Wrote:  Here is why I think that won't happen. If our $100 million isn't going toward retrofitting Turner for a football stadium, and building the future Hank Aaron field on Dale Murphy Dr(one can hope about Murph), then Carter's end just shot up astronomically. To retrofit that big of a stadium into condos and shops, their $200 million investment just doubled. I don't know how many business deals I have seen where the big carrot is dangled only to have the small compromises met.

But here is the thing. Let's say it costs 100M to retrofit Turner, you have to privately raise that money and it must be in hand. The Capital Campaign has to designate a specific amount for athletics and the donations have to be made specifically for athletics. Can use student fees but that is already being used for other items it seems. At least that is my understanding from when we built the football ops building.

Someone posted that a portion of the campaign was for athletics. But I don't believe it was anywhere close to 100M if I remember correctly( I realize you probably pulled that number our of a hat so I just went with it)

Believe me, if you guys can state funds for athletics then more power to you because that means we will be building a brand new arena for basketball.

There are these things called bonds which makes it to where you don't have to have all the money in hand.

And regarding you getting the same treatment as us? Come back when you have one of the largest universities in the country. You just can't compare a massive land locked research university in the heart of the biggest city in the SE trying to expand its campus to a rural comprehensive university with less than 30,000 students that can expand outwards as they please. If that were the way it works, then we'd already have a stadium because you do, and you'd have a law school because we do.

The problem with that is that the BoR has been treating all universities the same, including the flagship in Athens, and requiring that they have all funding in place prior to issuing bonds for construction on athletics projects.

You can thank West Georgia for that. They left the BoR holding the bag by not raising their portion of fundraising. They also used the old "put classrooms in the building" trick to get BoR to fork over funds and it backfired. Now we're all under more intense scrutiny for funding of facilities upgrades.

This is why Georgia Southern fans have been so interested in funding mechanisms for what you're going to do, from strictly an athletics standpoint. I don't think any of us are concerned with the rest of the project.

I think it is a percentage, not the entire amount. I know that GT raised 20 million (about half) to get approved to issue bonds for McCamish Pavillion. OT - If you have a chance to visit McCamish, do so. It is the nicest college venue I've been to.

I'm not sure most of our fan base understands your point, which is what I'm interested to see as well.

It's obvious Turner Field stadium is a problem and it would be better if it weren't even there. It's too big for GaSt and too costly to retrofit and maintain. Much easier to build a new one from scratch.

One proposal with two options. This is not unexpected. The is the possibility that there are engineering challenges that are insurmountable in converting the Ted. So you cover your bases.

Turner Field has 3 different bidders

So it is between us, a non-profit who wants to build an indoor track Mercury Youth Organization , and whatever Rita World Pearl Kingdom, LLC is
