The rules are the rules and they wer changed two years ago. If a player is getting called for this multiple times he needs to have a talk with his coach about his technique.
I'm not saying I don't know what the rule is. I'm saying I don't understand how this can be targeting.
Did you actually see the play? He didn't lead with the crown of his helmet, the hit wasn't above the shoulders, and he didn't "launch". Re read the rules then rewatch the play and tell me what part of it comes remotely close to "targeting"?
The rules for targeting do not say that the hit has to be launched or that they need to lead with the head.
Rule 9-1-3: Targeting and initiating contact with the crown of the helmet. No player shall target and initiate contact against an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. When in question, it is a foul.
Rule 9-1-4: Targeting and initiating contact to head or neck area of a defenseless player. No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, fist, elbow or
To me, in real time, it looked like he put his head down and hit McGill. Launching is considered an indicator but *not* part of the rule.
I'll say this... It was *CLOSE* and I don't believe the play was ejection worthy but it is consistent with how targeting is getting called the past couple of seasons.

My bad on that one. The ESPN crew said it was his second... But it was the worst announcing crew I've ever heard.
You guys have a great, aggressive, hard hitting defense and because of that I'm sure you will see more than your fair share. Until the NCAA does a better job defining this and making it harder to eject a player it's just life.
